Hi guys, I'm heading to Londonderry for a 2 months. As I'm programmer working remotely i will have to bring my PC with me. As I'm in Czech Republic right now taking it on the plane is not an option. Do you have any idea how to ship it safely and in possible cheapest way?

    • What is ideal location for hotel. Do I need to book.

Isle of Wight Jan 23, 2017 at 11:42 AM

We will be arriving on 1st July. We are only staying 2 nights with a car. Looking at the map would it be better to stay at Newport or Shanklin. We basically want to drive around the island and look at sights and shops etc.

Bing July should we book first or drive onto island and hopefully find accommodation that we would like. We are both in our sixties.

    • Gatwick to London plane due in 21.45

      Gatwick Feb 12, 2017 at 11:44 PM

Hi, Can someone please help me as this is doing my head in! We land at Gatwick at 21.45 and need to travel to York. What is the best way to go about this? Get into London and stay overnight in a cheap hotel close to Kings Cross and then set off the next morning. I take it the trains run around the clock, not knowing how long we may be held up in Immigration etc.

      Thanks in advance.

      A Big "High Five".

United Kingdom Jan 25, 2017 at 8:30 AM

Yes I know this is not a travel question but I put it here deliberately. Please don't move it to miscellaneous as it's aimed specifically at all the people who follow or have helped out in the UK Travel forums.

Of the top 30 Travel Forum Gurus here on VT, 5 are from the UK. That's 1 in 6. For a relatively small nation far outnumbered by the rest of the world that's quite amazing.

Not withstanding all the other international members who have helped out with invaluable information about the United Kingdom. Well done and thank you everyone.

It's now time to delete the direct link to UK Visa rules in my browser, probably one of the most asked questions ever on VT and enjoy my virtual retirement.

A big "High Five" to everyone for making this the best travel forum in the world.

    • Not much lodging available due to bank holiday.

      Edinburgh 6 hours ago

We are flying in to EDI for the start of a 3-week driving trip around Scotland. We arrive on Thursday 5/27 and will stay near the airport for 1 night (we arrive late in the evening). We thought we would then spend 3 more nights in a B and B in central Edinburgh. However, due to the bank holiday, many of the places where we would like to stay aren't available. So, instead of touring Edinburgh first, we thought we would head out of town and see some other sights/cities first and see Edinburgh at the the end our middle of our stay. Any suggestion of where we should go first since Edinburgh will be crowded? Thank you, Cynthia Burbank, CA

    • Mobile Phone Carrier?

      Scotland Jan 27, 2017 at 9:26 PM

We plan to purchase our first smart phones before visiting Scotland in June. Are their providers you would recommend and/or any we should avoid? We'll mostly be in Edinburgh and the Highlands.

(The more I learn, the more excited I become in anticipation of this trip.)

How sad that this site is closing! The Scotland page has been so welcoming and helpful! Many thanks to all who've responded to my questions.

18 days. England, Scotland or Ireland?

United Kingdom Jan 23, 2017 at 3:49 PM

Hi. I'm planning to travel by myself on my 26th birthday in May. I want to spend approx 18 days to visit UK. I am not into big cities and more interested with beautiful relaxing scenery (castles, mountains, lakes). I am planning to fly into London and spend maybe 2-3 days just to see the big ben and other touristy area then off to somewhere relaxing. Do you think I can visit both Scotland and Ireland in this timeframe? If not, which of the two would you recommend in terms of beautiful scenery? Also, would it be better if I hire a car and drive or take public transportation? Thanks in advance! :)

Llandeilo, South Wales north of Swansea by rail or the M4 & A483

      Swansea Jan 12, 2014 at 8:25 AM

Accommodations recommendations, good pubs, restaurants and all comments appreciated. Has anyone been to Llandeilo and is there a taxi service? What is there to see and do in this small village? We are going there, by train from London Paddington via Swansea, likely in August. Can anyone recommend a hotel and a genealogy researcher as my ancestors came from Llandeilo on the river Towy? Their surnames are Pulker and Peacock.

Sorry, I would have posted this under Llandeilo not Swansea but, VT doesn't know this location though it is shown on the VT map.

All comments are greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chuck

      Bachelorette Party?!

      Swansea Jul 20, 2007 at 9:15 AM

      Hello,

My daughter is getting married in early August in a town called Llanddowror, the home town of her fiance. She thinks it's going to be only her father and I going. We are from the US and have never been to Wales.

She has no idea yet, but I have arranged for 4 of her best friends to surprise her and meet us there!!

The problem? We want to have a fun bachelorette party, but I have NO idea what to plan or where we might go for some action. We would like to be in a bar or club with lots of people.

Is Swansea the best place? How far away is it from Llanddowror?

The other problem? It's going to have to take place on the first MONDAY night in August! Not the best night of the week for a party - but it has to be that way.

Can anyone give me some ideas of where to go? Thanks so much!

      Swansea and Cardiff

West Glamorgan Apr 7, 2007 at 10:35 AM

      Dear all,

I will be staying at Swansea for three days for a conference and I already checked the local Wales tourism sites for activities.

I am planning to go to the National Waterfront Museum and the National Museum as well as sightseeing at the city centre (castle-ruins-,churches,shops,etc).

Since I will be doing this in one morning because I have to attend (and present a paper) on the afternoon, I have to go back to the conference.

On the second day I was planning to skip it and go to Cardiff. It is one hour by bus, I checked, and I plan to see the National Museum as well.

Would you have more advice on any special cultural item I don't know about?

I already checked buses and those lovely trains that take too long for my schedule so, don't bother telling me about them because I will have no time.

I mean, any museum collection that is smaller and doesnt appear on tourism sites or a castle that is pretty close to go from Cardiff or Swansea?

      Any input is valuable. Thanks.
