      Dogsledding-Weather Conditions-Aurora Borealis Question

      Kiruna Jan 2, 2017 at 10:25 PM

      Hello Everyone!

I had a few more questions about traveling to Absiko/Kiruna since me and 5 friends will be traveling there next week. You guys were all really helpful in my previous question, and I hope you can share some more insights with me.

      1) I've noticed that the weather in this area of Sweden tends to snow a lot lately. I'm curious to know if it is generally light snow, or is it heavy snowstorms/ white outs?

      2) I've been keeping track of the Aurora forecasts with some apps, and it says that the two nights we will be up north, has a kp index of 2 (nothing). Ironically, for the next few days after, there's a kp index of 5 (which is amazing but we will be back home by then). My question is, if you think it will be worth traveling all the way to Abisko at all if there is such a small chance in seeing the northern lights?

      3) Dogsledding. We want to do it, but there are so many options and it's been hard finding the right place. I've read that Kiruna has nicer landscapes for dogsledding than Abisko, and I wonder if that is true? Also, I'm looking for a place in Kiruna that will offer individual sleds (for 6 people-2 hours-not expensive/cheap). Do you have any recommendations?

Thank you so much for any information you can lend!! I look forward to any responses!

      -Sara

      Transportation between Abisko and Kiruna

      Kiruna Dec 26, 2016 at 1:01 AM

      Hi all!

We're 5 people planning a very short trip to Kiruna and Abisko. We are arriving in Kiruna Saturday night, Jan 14 at 21:00 and leaving Kiruna on Monday morning at 12:55. We want to spend Sunday morning checking out a bit of Kiruna/or ice hotel and maybe dog sledding (either Kiruna or Abisko), leave early Sunday afternoon to Abisko spend Sunday night there, and leave Monday morning to Kiruna airport. What are the recommended methods of travel then?

Regarding driving, I don't have experience driving in winter conditions so I am very concerned about renting a car. If you definitely recommend it, do you have any tips, instructions, or advice about night driving in Abisko.

      Thanks!

      bike trails

      Umeå Mar 25, 2015 at 2:45 PM

I will be spending 3 days in Umea in the spring as some of my ancesters were from there. One of them was born in Umea and her mother was born in Boggbole. I see there is a bike path that connects Umea to Boggbole and Boggbole Manor through the woods? I'm traveling alone and although born in the country, I never felt comfortable in the woods by myself…nuts perhaps. Is this area safe? Is there a bus that goes there in the summer? Would a taxi be wiser? I will not have a cell phone with me. There are ruins of an old sawmill in which my Gr…grandfather worked that I would like to explore also. Any knowledge of this area or suggestions? Norlin and Linstrom were a couple of the names. Is there an old cemetery in the area also (LOL)?

      Northern Lights in Umeå

      Umeå Jan 28, 2014 at 6:24 AM

      Dear all,

I am just back from Tromsø, which was amasing with its scenery and polar landscapes. Unfortunately, didn't see the Northern lights but that's another occassion to go up in the far north.

I was thinking of Umeå this time, going in March. Do you think its a good period or it might be a bit late then. How is it in terms of weather. To see the lights you need clear sky and low temperatures, so how is Umeå in this regard? Please recommend any easily accessible point to Umeå and feel free to share your experience there - local people's advice is most welcome.

Could someone tell me where to buy Swarovski jewelry in Umea?

If there are no Swarovski stores here, then any crystal jewelry stores in Umea are recommended. I want to buy some as gifts for my friends.

      Thanks

I need advice. My grandmother died and the funeral is on the 23rd December in the morning.

My family are travelling to Northern Finland through Sweden for Christmas.

I can get into Stockholm for 9.15 PM on the 23rd. I need to get up to Umea for early the following morning.

The plains, trains and buses are of no help.

Can anyone suggest anything at all?

    • australians coming to sweden, wanting to ski artic circle

      Hemavan Jul 13, 2004 at 3:02 AM

hi we are a couple of australians who are coming to sweden at the end of the year. We would like to do some downhill skiing in or close to the arctic circle, but don't know if the ski resorts will be open due to the lack of sunlight. We would like to ski there in the 1st or 2nd week of January 2005. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone could tell us which resorts (if any) are open. If they use lights to extend the skiing time and what sort of snow we could expect (hopefully lots of powder). Any other information that you feel could be usefull would also be appreciated. thanks dan and kim (see ya on the slopes)
