    • Baggage storage in Paris

      Paris 12 hours ago

      Hi guys,
I am heading to Paris in January. On my last day I do not need to be at the airport until about 5 o'clock to catch my plane to Sydney. I obviously want to make the most of this as a sight-seeing day(possibly Disnayland) but will have my luggage with me. Does anybody know of any storage lockers or something I would be able to take my big bag to? Does the airport have lockers for rent? Or does Disneyland have big storage cubes? Or would some hotels offer baggage holding even when you have checked out?
      Thanks

    • How tourist-y is Antibes in January or February?

      Antibes Nov 7, 2016 at 12:32 AM

How tourist-y is Antibes in January or February?

I need a get-away soon, but I don't want to be around large numbers of tourists milling around, taking photos, partying. Unlike many tourists these days, I'm not "looking for the action" (excitement) at all.

I do speak French fluently and have been a francophile most of my life.

Is Antibes in the winter subdued enough, quiet enough for me to spend two weeks just de-compressing, wandering around, reading (French novels) and listening to classical music in my apartment? Or should I look elsewhere on the Cote d'Azur, somewhere smaller like Vence or Beaulieu, etc.??

    • Menton or Villefranche-sur-mer ?

      Menton Nov 5, 2016 at 11:46 PM

How would you compare Menton with Villefranche-sur-mer as a base to explore the Cote d'Azur for a first-time traveler (to the French Riviera) for two-weeks? I am looking for a quiet village or small town atmosphere, away from hordes of tourists, and crossed off Antibes, etc. for that reason. Somehow I narrowed down to my list to Menton and Villefranche-sur-mer. I know the latter is much smaller and seems to cater to a more upper-tier clientele, while the former has attracted many French retirees.

I do speak French and have a degree in art history, with interest in French history and literature. I will not have a car.

    • Solo woman traveling in Paris on New Years Eve

      Paris Nov 28, 2016 at 10:57 AM

I am a 54 year old woman who will be arriving in Paris Orly airport on Thursday, December 29 at 5 pm,
and flying out of DeGalle airport on Sunday, January 1 at 11 am.

      My questions...

      1. What area in Paris should I stay in?
Since I really only have two days I would like a great location to walk to things in the area and as a base for sightseeing. I would be so grateful for decent, hotel and restaurant suggestions in that area?

      2. What is the best/easiest way to get from Orly to "that area" at that time of day?

      3. Are there any good one day tours?
I would probably book that for Friday or Saturday, and spend the other day on my own exploring the area around my hotel.

      4. What is there to do on New Years Eve? I don't drink but would love to know what would be safe for me to do alone that night.

      Thank you very much!

Can anyone suggest a day-trip from Paris?

      Paris Nov 11, 2016 at 7:32 AM

I will be visiting Paris in a few weeks. I have been to Paris numerous times and know it very well. Equally, I have taken many day-trips from Paris and have been to all the obvious places (and even beyond). Can anyone suggest a new place I might visit? I am looking for a place within a two hour radius by train.

I like quaint places, and/or places that has a old worldly feel to them. I enjoy visiting places with a riverside setting as well e.g. Moret-sur-Loing.

Here is a short list of day-trips I have taken:

Amiens, Auxerre, Beauvais, Bourges, Châlons-en-Champagne, Chantilly, Chartres, Compiègne, Dijon, Fontainebleau, Giverny, Moret-sur-Loing, Orléans, Provins, Reims, Rouen, Senlis, Sens, Tours, Troyes, Versailles.

I have not listed other places I have visisted that are further a way e.g. Caen, Lyon, Metz, Nancy, Nantes, Rennes etc.

At the moment I am thinking of visiting Meaux (because there is a cathedral in Meaux), but I would like to have a few other places on my list. I thought of trying to get to Avallon and/or Loches, but it appears there aren't any direct (or very few direct) trains to Avallon or Loches.

      Many thanks

Europcar dependability/Saint Pierre des Corps TGV Station

by smeans2 Online Now Dec 12, 2014 at 4:47 PM

Has anyone had experience renting an automatic transmission car from Europcar at the TGV station in Saint Pierre des Corps? Avis says "sold out," Hertz says "can't book on line--call" (not encouraging), and Europcar offers exactly what I want. Are they trustworthy? Sixt did this to me once (said "yes," had zip). I will not use them again. I know automatics are hard to find in France outside of airport locations, but If Europcar says they will provide one, what are my chances? Many thanks in advance to the many always-helpful VT members. --Spencer

by bevhenry1960 Online Now Jun 3, 2014 at 9:27 AM

my daughter and I are going visit tours 19th 0 26th June.
We urgently require somewhere to stay as place we had booked looks TOTALLY unsuitable on google map - ie 1.5km from centre but down an unlit road with no public transport.

I am partially disabled though only 54 so we would like a place that we feel safe in even if near Tours but with access to transportation or reasonable Taxi fare would prefer SC in a small flat etc but would consider anything at the moment.
We have never been to France before except of course Paris so we are unsure of what to do.

any information - help - would be appreciated

      Thank you

by travisFL Online Now Mar 5, 2012 at 1:44 PM

      Hello!

I will be visiting Tours with my wife and 4-year old son next week and would greatly appreciate input on favorite family-oriented activities. If you had two days to spend, how would you fill the time? Obviously with a 4-year old we will unfortunately not be doing any bike rides but we are open to hiking and touring by car. My wife wants to see gardens and castles... I'd like to see interesting architectures and areas of historical importance.

Staying at the Clarion Chateau Belmont.

Would it make sense for us to hire a car during the day for tours? Take a bus? Arrange tours at the hotel? I'm basically starting from scratch.

Also a specific question on the train... we will take a train from Paris to Tours on the first day... what is the best way to get to hotels from the train station in Tours? Are there plenty of taxis or should we arrange something ahead of time?

I will continue to read through this forum for ideas, but wanted to get this posted given the trip is next week.

      Thanks for your input!!

I will be visiting Tours in September 2011 with my wife and two teenaged children. We arrive at the Tours Train Station at around 9.30 a.m. and will be returning the same evening. Does the Tours City Council or the Tourism department operate any half or full day bus excursions to the nearby Chateaus? I have been checking the private tour operators and they seem to be a bit steep to me simply for travel from Tours to one or two chateaus!

Also, which would be the best option to have lunch in Tours?

It seems kind of silly to have to wait almost 25 minutes for a 5-minute shuttle. Is there a faster way to get into Tours? A bus? I'm sure a taxi probably wouldn't be worth it...

      Private car & driver?

by SandiM Online Now Jan 8, 2011 at 9:00 PM

I've looked at the Ligeris (Tours) website and saw what they have to offer for tours of the chateaux, however I'm pretty picky about what I want to see and when. We (mother and I) are staying right at Chambord at the St Michel hotel for 1 night, and browsing the chateau & grounds in the early morning. Then, we'll take the train and head to Tours for the afternoon and stay 1 night. I really want to find a tour group that will take good ol' ma and me to Azay le Rideau and Chenenonceau in the early morning for some photos of the (uncrowded) grounds and exterior of these 2 chateaux (not really necessary to view the interior), however I see that the Ligeris website doesn't offer this kind of tour. We don't drive (can't) and we don't really want to be hustled around in a van at 930am (we're ready to go at 7am). Are there any private (reliable) companies out there who can fulfill our demands? I don't think trains or buses go that way that early in the morning, do they? Thanks!

i stayed in a chateaux in the loire valley about 8 years back and i don't remember the name of it. it was a small chateaux (we were the only ones who stayed there). there is a long straight tree-lined driveway. the room was immaculate - very deep red tapestry and decorated like a royal chamber. the town was *very* quiet - only one restaurant in town and we were the only ones there that night too.
does anyone know the chateaux i am speaking of? the most distinct memory i have is the long tree-lined driveway.
      thanks so much!
