    • Ice Caves and Ice Climbing

      Iceland Aug 29, 2016 at 8:38 PM

      1) Where is the best area to see the bright blue ice caves in Iceland in mid to late December? How long would it take to drive from Reykjavik to that area this time of year one way???
      2) Do you have to hire a guide/do a tour to see them?
      3) Is there anywhere close to this area to do a day ice climbing trip as well?
      4) Any other tips?

      Thanks,
      Rachel

We are traveling to Iceland around the end of september, and we planned on hiking for a week. Our route is close to the Katla vulcan. Does anyone know if the route around the vulcan is still accessible because of the chances of an eruption?

    • Iceland in Late October?

      Iceland Yesterday

      Hello all,

I have just stumbled across this fantastic board and am excited to read pages and pages of posts while I research!

It looks like I may be taking a solo journey to Iceland towards the end of October (around the 18th or so for about a week). I know that I'm pretty far into the shoulder season, but I was hoping to drive the ring road (or at least a good portion of it, as I know it is recommended to take longer). My main goal will be to just be out on the road driving, seeing Iceland, and filling up as many memory cards as I can. Unfortunately, my budget precludes group tours so I'll just have to see what is there on my own! I'm hoping that there may be some fall colors in the ground cover to bring a different look to my images as well. So maybe some clear nights, maybe some fall colors, but hopefully some solitude and travel.

With that in mind, are there any specific things I should be aware of? I'm generally a camping type of person, but realize that that is most likely not an option at that time of year. Might it be best to find hostels? Are many hostels open at that time of year? I'm a confident winter driver here in the States but realize that winter in Iceland is a different beast all together. Between possibility of snow and high winds, are there areas that you might suggest I avoid?

Any tips, pointers, thoughts, links to threads I may have overlooked would be much appreciated! Thanks.

6 days trip - comment on itinerary

      Iceland Sep 20, 2016 at 4:52 AM

Uses rental car - last week of October '16:
Day 1 - Land in Iceland and night stay
Day 2 - Keflavik to Seljalandsfoss Waterfalls, Reynisfjara and stay at Kirkjubæjarklaustur lodge
Day 3 - Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Jokulsarlon, Staftafell, hike to Skaftafellsjökull glacier and stay at Kirkjubæjarklaustur lodge
Day 4 - Kirkjubæjarklaustur to Skógafoss, Gulfoss waterfall, Strokkur Geysir and stay at Selfoss lodge
Day 5 - To Þingvellir National Park, Reykjavik and stay at Keflavik
      Day 6 - Leave Iceland

Questions: 1) Weather is the one everyone scares us. Can the above itinerary achievable and what are the risks?
      2) Food costs and availability of vegetarian also is one we are afraid of and trying to do some good planning - any advise
      3) Petrol and Diesel availability - considering the above itinerary maximum travel we will do will be around 350 km in a day - hoping we are not going to hit an issue - any precautions?
      4) We want to see Northern lights - read somewhere it comes only after 10pm till early morning - will it come earlier?
      5) I am travelling with my wife and 2 children (aged 11 and 7) - is the trip looking too aggressive to cover?

      Thanks!

Must see and could miss pools

      Reykjavík Aug 29, 2016 at 9:40 PM

I am coming to Iceland (4th time) for Jólaþorpið í Hafnarfirði. I would like to visit all of the public pools (17) in the capitol area. I have already been to Vesturbæjarlaug and Laugardalslaug. If my idea does not work out which pools can I miss? and which pools must I visit? Klébergslaug, Varmárlaug, Lágafellslaug, Grafarvogslaug, Árbæjarlaug, Breiðholtslaug, Salalaug, Ásvallalaug, Suðurbæjarlaug, Sundhöll Hafnarfjarðar, Ásgarðslaug Garðabæ, Sundlaug Kópavogs, Álftaneslaug, Seltjarnarneslaug, and Sundhöll Reykjavíkur. By visiting the pools I will see different areas and see more residents than tourists.

Since I will be visiting Hafnarfirðar, those pools and the ones on the #1 bus line are almost certain.

      Thank you

Hi guys! I'm planning to make a solo trip to Iceland mainly for landscape photography and sightseeing & I was just wondering if it was a good idea to do so. I'm thinking of renting a camper van to sleep in, and visiting grocery stores for my meals. I'm also curious on how would I best handle my toilet/shower needs? Any help & additional information would be greatly appreciated! :)

    • Where to stay in south iceland?

South Iceland Apr 28, 2015 at 8:54 PM

We are planning a trip to iceland with our two kids - ages 4 and 2.
I read up the last few days and came up with a basic itinerary that we could do,in our one week over there.

      Reykjavik - 1 day
      Golden Circle - 1 day
Do the ring road up to Jökulsárlón lagoon.
Keflavik or snaefellsnes if there is time.

I would like to split the trip from Reykjavik - Jökulsárlón lagoon in 2-3 days at least. That way we won't be too rushed with our kids. However I was looking for accommodations and expedia or any other major website, barely shows any hotels along the south coast. There seem to be hotels in Hella, but nothing much else.

Can anyone suggest how we do this trip? And where to stay or how to split our trip over a week? Thanks a ton!

Blue Lagoon to the town of Keflavik ..

      Hello everyone !
This is my first time posting but I'd like to say thank you for all the helpfull people who's messages I've already read several times over :)

Will be going to Iceland early may for 6 days.. my itinerary is somewhat of a puzzle but i'm getting it sorted out little by little..

My question to which i've found no answers is..
On the last day we are planning : Reykjavik-Blue Lagoon-Keflavik (town, not airport)
So Reykjavik - Blue Lagoon (on saturday May 9 late afternoon) I found Fly bus or other.
But Blue Lagoon - Keflavik city is problem ..as bus schedule stops at 3pm to keflavik.

Is it possible to take a taxi for a reasonable price from BL to Keflavik? And if so where do we get it from ?

      thanks for any suggestions !

I plan on stopping at all the sites in between and staying my sixth night in reykjavik for the Beer Day. Also could I do this drive in a regular little car or would I need to rent a 4wd?

    • advice on where to base ourselves in Iceland

South Iceland Apr 1, 2013 at 5:12 AM

Hi fellow travellers, We are planning to spend a week in Iceland in late August. (British family of 4 - teenagers 15 and 19 but not interested in nightlife) We really want to hire a cottage and to stay in one place but are wondering where to base ourselves - we plan to hire a car but have no experience of four wheel driving. I was thinking of somewhere in the golden circle so we could still get to rejyavick for shopping and possibly trips but would be staying somewhere more scenic than in town. Would really appreciate recommendations of where to stay, what to see and the best places to buy good quality food in particular organic food. An indication of prices would also be very helpful

      Thanks

      Fjaðrárgljúfur

South Iceland May 13, 2012 at 12:46 PM

      Hi

We'll be visiting the area this summer. After some research, we've decided that a walk through/along the Fjaðrárgljúfur, is not to be missed. Direction to the canyon says: "Take road no. 1 from Selfoss direction Höfn. Just before arriving at Kirkjubæjarklaustur take exit to road no. F206 to Lakagígjar. After few minutes drive the road to Laki leads to the right. Do not take the right turn to Laki instead you should continue the drive for few more minutes until you arrive at Fjaðrárgljúfur".

My question: Can we drive this short section of F206 with a normal 2WD? No other part of our planned trip requires a 4WD.

      Thanks!

      1. I will arrive KEF international airport 6am and get a rental car. My friend will arrive at 3pm in KEF. And we will go blue lagoon. So I have some quesitons:
a.) If I go blue lagoon alone from 10am ~2pm, then pick up my friend and go back lagoon until 6pm. Will I be bored? Or the lagoon is very fun and I can spend all day in it?
b.) Or should I drive to Reykjavik and take a walk in the city?
c.) Any other nearby is good to drive to for few hours?
d.) If I want to see northern light, I just find a dark place and raise my head?

      2. Is Vestmannaeyjar a bad place to go in winter time? (no birds...) I will be in Reykjavik Dec 22~28. I am thinking where nearby should I drive to? Myrdalsjökull has no stable weather, snow.is tell me to check the weather with them one day before. And ski slopes near Reykjavik told me snow amount is not enough yet. Any suggesitons in Xmas? I am only sure that I will go golden cycle.

      3. Will Hallgrimskirkja have special event in Xmas? There website is not english and I don't understadn. http://www.hallgrimskirkja.is/

      Hello all,

We will be coming to Iceland for a weekend in beginning of March and would like to go on the Golden Cricle, Blue Lagoon, have some time in the city and try to hunt for northern light. We figured that it will be much cheaper to rent a car and go aroundourselves rather than taking all those tours when there will be at least 5 of us.

So my question is that what is the driving like in March? Will you still have snow by then? Is it easy to drive around? What about parking? Would that be a problem in the city?

Thanks, and I look forward to my trip in Iceland!
