Need help with Planning Where to Eat Based on Our Itinerary

by MariyanS Online Now Feb 3, 2016 at 6:24 AM

Hello!

We'll be visiting Singapore for the first time next week (4 days), and we're currently trying to figure out three things:

- average amount we need to allot for food per meal - average amount we need to allot for transportation - efficient / convenient routes to take to cover as many places as possible in one go

For now, we are thinking of going to the following areas:

Esplanade Gardens by the Bay ArtScience Museum National Museum Supertree Grove / OCBC Skyway Little India Chinatown Tiong Bahru Orchard Road Art Trail Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (low priority) Botanic Garden (low priority)

For the food, we were hoping to try different places for every meal namely:

- fast food chain (preferably local or anything Asian) - convenience stores (preferably local or any other convenience store offering local staples) - hawker stores - cafe (preferably offering local bread / drinks) - other types of restaurants that you could suggest, if there are any

Based on the lists above, can you please suggest good places to eat near the places we will be going to?

We will be staying somewhere in Little India and we read that there are a lot of places where we can eat there, but we can't figure out which specific ones among all the options available we should head to. Deciding on the spot wouldn't be much of an issue, but we're hoping to factor in the budget as early as now (hopefully between 7-10 SGD per meal (lower if possible, but for places on the mid-range or higher end, above that is fine).

Also, how much would you suggest we allot for transportation expenses? We have been advised to pay for an EZ Link card and top it up with 35 SGD. Would it be enough to cover all or majority of the places on our list? If not, how much more do you suggest we top it up with or which place do you think we could scratch off our list or move to low priority based on logistics or value for money?

Tips and miscellaneous advice will be much appreciated.

You will find that walking around is the easiest way to find eating places- there are hundreds of them, everywhere.
The outdoor food markets are cheapest with wide variety of foods. Orchard Road has good food stores
    coldstorage.com.sg/store-loc...
For a 'special' meal, Clark Quay or Boat Quay are nice, alongside the river. But not cheap. Singapore is an expensive city. Outside each restaurant there is a board with menu and prices, so just stroll and choose.
Food chains- the usual suspects. Subway, MacDonalds.......have a look

For the Botanic Gardens, I suggest that you take a picnic
There are food stores located in Little India, and Fruit Hawkers on the streets.
Take PLENTY of bottled water, dehydration is a problem in Singapore

Transportation: The MRT is best, and goes just about everywhere.

    MRT, Singapore

Get an EZ card and top up as needed.

Among Indian restaurants, Saravana Bhavan is one of the famous having chains all over the world. Komalas, Komala Vilas and Kamat is something you can look into as well. I stayed many years back, and definitely food cost in Little India is not costly. I also liked Bugis area and one Hindu and one Chinese temple nearby - very beautiful.  Zoo is compact and nice - Jurong Bird park was also nice.

You might want to check out www.hungrygowhere.com.

There are many food choices and some portions are too small for non-asian.

I agree with Lynne, just choose an eating place from the hundreds (thousands) you'll find all over the city. The hawker centres and food courts are particularly good, with many choices of food and they're cheap with a very good freshly cooked meals for less than ten dollars easy to find. Food courts are in most shopping malls, even the touristy ones, usually on the top floor or basement, and even in office blocks.

In the more local areas (off the main tourist routes like Orchard Road) such as Toa Payoh, Geylang, Little India, Chinatown, you'll also find local cafes and coffee shops.

Easier than trying to list them here will be for you to check out our suggestions in the tips here on VT. My Singapore eating tips are here: Singapore Restaurant Tips by colin_bramso

I often like to eat in the many food courts when in Singapore. They have a mix of Chinese, Malay-Muslim, and Indian food. You can try a little of each.

HOWEVER, it appears you will be there during Chinese New Year. Expect the Chinese stalls to be closed for a few days. I was once in Singapore over Chinese New Year. It was also one of the few times which had a Malay-Muslim holiday at the same time. Only the Indian food stalls were open. After a while, the others open.
