Shetland in September?

by vidyalr Online Now Jul 30, 2011 at 7:02 AM

Hi All
I am traveling to UK and Scotland in Sept this year with my 3 year old and was wondering if it would be a good idea to venture out to Shetland at this time. We would be very excited to see some sealife and take a cruise, however I was wondering if the timing was way off? Looking forward to any help I can get on the same! Thanks in advance! :-)

The seabirds that nest on Shetland will be long gone by that stage, which is a shame because particularly on Fetlar the Great Skuas are amazing (and pretty intimidating) things to see. The gannets to will have left Hermaness which is the other site I'd have suggested.

Sealife, certainly cetaceans can be very hard to predict. Seeing them from boats is hard enough but I think with a 3 year old you'll be limited to standing on the shore. I don't think any of the whale watching boats I've been on would have taken a small child.

There are reliable sites for otters on Shetland, but I don't know about that time of year - you'd need to ask a specialist. There are professional guides who would probably be your best bet.

I hate the idea of putting someone off going to Shetland, it's one of the most wonderful places I've been but I think for sealife other than rockpooling (still one of my favorite passtimes, but not something you need to go to Shetland for) you'll struggle in September.

Having said that, there is plenty to do up there even if it's just getting a go on the inter-island ferries (Lerwick to Bressay is a simple one).

Hi I am in the USA but lived in Shetland for a few years. I travel to Shetland about once every two years and always in the summer. I believe September still offers long daylight hours. I think September is fine to see Shetland. Not so much wildlife.
