    • Sarawak In January, weather and accesibility of National Parks

      Borneo Dec 25, 2016 at 2:30 PM

      Hi,
I was planning to fly to Sarawak, Malaysia on the January 5. and spend about 5 weeks in Sarawak and Brunei. The Lonely Planet Guide says there is no particularly good or bad time to travel in Borneo because there is no real dry season and weather can vary very much from year to year, so I didn't think there is going to be a problem with travelling in Sarawak in January. But now I see that many travel-websites don't recommend to go to Sarawak in January at all due to very bad weather.
Is there somebody who has been there in January or even better lives in Sarawak who can tell me what I can expect?
Let me tell you first what I would expect from this trip. In Germany I work in nature conservation, so I spend most summer working outside. So with the right equipment some rain doesn't scare me. Also I want to spend most of the time in National Parks and am most interested in Botany (Orchids, Ferns) and also Insects, Spiders, Scorpions, Snakes. I could live without seeing Orangutans which are apparently hard to find when it's raining a lot. I would like to spend a lot of time in Nationalparks with dayhiking trails where I don't need a guide so I can take my time for taking pictures. But I'm also looking forward to expolring the caves in Gunung Mulu and Niah National Parks.
So my main concern is: Will all the National Parks and also accomadations in or around National Parks be open and accessible during January? How likely is it that National Parks will not be accessible due to floodings or storms etc. What do I have to expect exactly from the weather. Does it rain all day long, or is it more very strong but short raining episodes and then long periodes without rain during the day. Is it raining more during the day or at night? (I've been in Java during rainy season three years ago and it rained mostly during the night.) I wouldn't mind it too much If there is some rain every day but I also need dry periods for taking pictures. What I woldn't like is to be stuck in my hotels for days because it is raining non stop.
Also will there be any other tourists in the Parks? I don't want the places to be crowded of course, but honestly I don't like it when I'm always alone or the only guest in a hotel because I'm travelling alone.
The thing is that i will spend three month in Southeastasia, and right now I'm planning to start in Sarawak, but I could also reschedule and visit Sarawak in March. The weather is supposed to be much better in March but are the most attractive National Parks allready crowded in March? What would you recommend under the circumstances I described, go in January or reschedule and go in March? Also, does anybody happen to know when most of the Orchids are in bloom? I suspect it is in the wettest months.

A lot of questions here, I know. I would be very grateful for any advice.
      And Merry Christmas to everybody!

      Accommodation

by vinyi.c Online Now Feb 24, 2014 at 5:53 AM

Hi, I'm planning to visit Sipadan and several other islands around it this December for three or four days, but the accommodation in these islands are out of my budget. Is it alright to stay in Semporna, take a boat ride to and back from those islands throughout my stay? Or do you have any other suggestions? My budget is around RM150-RM300 per night.

      Thank you.

The Islands we are looking at are Mabul,,,Mataking,,,,,Kapalai,,,,and Pom Pom,

      Snorkelling in Sipadan/ islands nearby

by seatosky2101 Online Now Jan 26, 2011 at 10:57 PM

I am going to Sabah early next month. I heard about beautiful underwater near around Pulau Sipadan but it seems just for experienced scuba divers. To a fresh beginner who wants to learn snorkelling, is there anywhere near Sipadan where I can join courses to learn snorkelling? Particularly, I would want to see if there are any courses that the trainer can take care of you for the first time. If it is the first time to learn snorkelling, do you suggest Sipadan, or any small islands near KK that I can take the training easier and safer, and not necessarily commute to a place far from KK?

      3) What about renting of snorkelling equipment?

I am from Bangkok,Thailand. I plan to go to the Sipidan in a few days. Presently,I am not a scuba diver for I have stopped diving for more than 10 years, but I still enjoy snorkelling or skin diving. Is it possible to snorkel only at Sipidan and Mabul and Kapalai ? Can one be left on Sipidan island during daytime to swim and snorkel and be picked up by a dive boat in the afternoon?

      Pls Avoid Sipadan

by mizzzthanggg Online Now Jun 12, 2006 at 12:32 AM

Hi, sure you've heard about the tragic incident that occurred in Sipadan recently. finsonline.com/blog/fins/200...

While the dive operators are doing their best to salvage the situation, i feel that the best and strongest way to show to the Sabahan Government that these sort of cover-ups and foreseeable travesties to the precious marine life is to boycott Sipadan. It will take thousands of years to heal anyway after the accident, and if divers like us keep going there right now, it would simply show to the Govt that they can keep the media quiet and the furore will just die down and they can continue exploiting the islands as normal. Feigning ignorance about the barge and the developments being approved for the island is completely unacceptable.

There are many other lovely areas to dive around Malaysia. Pls avoid Sipadan and its surrounds for now, if not the whole of Sabah.

      Thanks.

Whats the smart way to dive Sipadan

by Michele75 Online Now May 25, 2006 at 3:42 AM

      Hi Sipadaners!

I have been in Singapore for about a year now. Long enough to realise that the packages that the internet sites of the Sipadan-related resorts offer are really targeted to some overseas customers. Normal prices in South-East Asia are not really overwhelming, usually.

I understand Sipadan is different but I am sure I don't have to pay 100$ a night to see it. So what would be the smart way. I don't mind a bit of an adventure, as a matter of fact I just booked tickets to Tawau and back so hopefully I am able to find something!

The idea is to stay a week, get a basic accomodation from Semporna, Mabul or whereever, dive around, day trips or whatever.. any ideas whats the best way for this kind of approach?

Usually the dive-sites in South-East Asia charge around 25 US$ for a dive. Whats it going to be like in Sipadan? I'll keep the overpriced online reservations as my very last option only.

Thanks for reading so far and thanks even more for the replies! Mike

The best way to go from Indonesia

by Perucha Online Now May 7, 2005 at 11:25 AM

Hi all, I'm an Indonesian living in Jakarta. I'm interested to go to Sipadan, but I find it it's a long way to go if I have to fly from Jakarta to KL then Kota Kinabalu then Tawau, while it's closer to East Kalimantan province of Indonesia. Is it possible to go from Tarakan (the northest city of East Kalimantan)? Maybe by boat?
Second, is there cheaper way to stay? I heard we are no longer can stay in Sipadan but in other islands like Mabul. But from the website, there's only (expensive) resort in Mabul and Kapalau. Any other cheaper hotel or hostel?
      Thanks a lot!

I am planning a trip to Sabah at the end of November 04. There have been doubts over safety for western tourists around Sipadan and surrounding islands posted on various international governmental website. Does anyone have recent first hand experience 'on the groud' as it were from this area. Also there is talk of the island closing at the end of the year - does anyone know when? How is the diving at this time of year? All info greatfully received, cheers.

As I heard all the resorts on Sipadan Island will be close down end of this year for preserving the Island; I'm not sure if I should try to make it to the Island by this year, so that I can stay on Sipadan Island or should I go next year? the water could be better by then. Does it really make a different staying on Sipadan Island?
