    • Sarawak In January, weather and accesibility of National Parks

      Borneo Dec 25, 2016 at 2:30 PM

      Hi,
I was planning to fly to Sarawak, Malaysia on the January 5. and spend about 5 weeks in Sarawak and Brunei. The Lonely Planet Guide says there is no particularly good or bad time to travel in Borneo because there is no real dry season and weather can vary very much from year to year, so I didn't think there is going to be a problem with travelling in Sarawak in January. But now I see that many travel-websites don't recommend to go to Sarawak in January at all due to very bad weather.
Is there somebody who has been there in January or even better lives in Sarawak who can tell me what I can expect?
Let me tell you first what I would expect from this trip. In Germany I work in nature conservation, so I spend most summer working outside. So with the right equipment some rain doesn't scare me. Also I want to spend most of the time in National Parks and am most interested in Botany (Orchids, Ferns) and also Insects, Spiders, Scorpions, Snakes. I could live without seeing Orangutans which are apparently hard to find when it's raining a lot. I would like to spend a lot of time in Nationalparks with dayhiking trails where I don't need a guide so I can take my time for taking pictures. But I'm also looking forward to expolring the caves in Gunung Mulu and Niah National Parks.
So my main concern is: Will all the National Parks and also accomadations in or around National Parks be open and accessible during January? How likely is it that National Parks will not be accessible due to floodings or storms etc. What do I have to expect exactly from the weather. Does it rain all day long, or is it more very strong but short raining episodes and then long periodes without rain during the day. Is it raining more during the day or at night? (I've been in Java during rainy season three years ago and it rained mostly during the night.) I wouldn't mind it too much If there is some rain every day but I also need dry periods for taking pictures. What I woldn't like is to be stuck in my hotels for days because it is raining non stop.
Also will there be any other tourists in the Parks? I don't want the places to be crowded of course, but honestly I don't like it when I'm always alone or the only guest in a hotel because I'm travelling alone.
The thing is that i will spend three month in Southeastasia, and right now I'm planning to start in Sarawak, but I could also reschedule and visit Sarawak in March. The weather is supposed to be much better in March but are the most attractive National Parks allready crowded in March? What would you recommend under the circumstances I described, go in January or reschedule and go in March? Also, does anybody happen to know when most of the Orchids are in bloom? I suspect it is in the wettest months.

A lot of questions here, I know. I would be very grateful for any advice.
      And Merry Christmas to everybody!

Travelling for two weeks to Malaysia (Mid July 2015) - Langkwai & Penang Island & Kuala Lumpur

by 2l_Nou Online Now Mar 14, 2015 at 5:24 AM

      Hi Everyone,

I am travelling with my best friend to Malaysia by mid July 2015. We are going to stay for two weeks there.

      Our plan is as follows:

      - Go to Langkawi Island for 4 days.
      - Go to Penang Island for 4 days.
      - Go to Kuala Lumpur for the rest of the period.

Please advise top areas & city center name in both Langkwai & Penang. Also the top beach names as we would love to swim in nice beach & to dive as well, also the beach clubs. Thus, we need your help to determine which areas to tackle for our accommodation.

Also, thanks to advise the city center name in Kuala Lumpur and/or which areas best to stay at. As our target is to stay near shopping areas, places to visit or do & the nice restaurants. We can go to clubbing as well.

Plus thanks to inform me about the things which can be done in Kuala Lumpur & where to do it.

Please feel free to advise any other islands (other than Langkwai & Penang) were we can visit & perform in a/b activities.

      Thanks all in advance.

We will be taking Airasia on our way home. This will be my first experience to Langkawi. Any luxury coach to recommend as it would be a long trip there.I have already made reservation though at Simfoni Resort for 2 units of 3 bedroom and 2 units of 2 bedroom. Any good reviews of that resort? Will it be low or high season? Shoud I rent cars in advance due to the large group? Im trying my best to plan ahead of our itinary there. Appreciate all the help that i could get.

Hi guys I am posting these up in our various honeymoon locations Singapore,KK,KL and Langkawi so if you can help out on any of the others feel free to pop over and answer away.

Myself and partner (wife when travelling) are trying to plan an itinerary and want to find out about the kinda of stuff that isn't in the tour guides (markets festivals etc.) as well as your personal recommendations.

In Langkawi we are staying in the berjaya 29th July - 2nd Aug. Any recommendations for these dates please help out.

We have decided on a Jet Ski Tour (so long as we can find a company that is eco friendly) a mangrove tour and the sky bridge so far. Any recommendations on these)

      Cheers and thank-you in advance!

      Getting around (staying at Berjaya)

by BlueLlama Online Now May 23, 2013 at 10:32 AM

Hi VTers - it's been a while since I've visited the forums, but I know I can count on the expertise here! I'm staying at the Berjaya Langkawi with my other half for the last week in September (should be a quiet time in Langkawi, I think?). Now, while we were sold on the chalet concept, we really aren't big resort people and want to be able to explore the island and eat out independently. My understanding is that the Berjaya is fairly cut off (except for the Oriental Village which doesn't appeal), so we're wondering how would be best to get out and about.

Is cycling feasible, or is this only suitable for short journeys? Would you recommend car hire? My partner owns a scooter in Italy, but I'm not sure how safe renting one of these is in Malaysia? The last one we rented abroad (Uruguay) came with one-size-fits-all helmets which wouldn't have done very much in a crash.

      Many thanks in advance!
