Re: Transporation and things to do
We visited Puerto Plata last November and did a few day trips. Depending on your interests you may be interested in one or more of the following:
- Puerto Plata City Tour (including a visit to the rum factory, the amber museum, the fortress, Parque Central and a ride on the "Teleferico" cable car). The cable car was the highlight of the day; the views from the top of Pico Isabel de Torres were breathtaking.
- Paradise Island (a fairly lengthy bus journey to Punta Rucia, followed by a bumpy speedboat ride out to Cayo Paraiso - a secluded sand bank with great snorkelling and a beach bar serving free-flowing rum and fresh pineapple).
- Outback Safari. This trip was sold to us on the basis that it was both educational and fun. We enjoyed a day exploring the countryside around Puerto Plata, visiting a local school, local homes, sugar cane plantations and a secluded beach where we were able to boogie board on the waves.
We booked all of our trips through "Tours by James" who has an office in the Playa Dorada Plaza shopping mall. His prices were very competitive and he gave us honest advice about which trips he thought were worthwhile and which were a waste of money (too long spent on buses/rushed sightseeing etc.) We'd happily recommend him.
At the time of our visit, a board outside our hotel was displaying taxi prices. The price from Playa Dorada to Cofresi was advertised asUS 30 one-way for up to 5 people. The airport is about 10-15 minutes further away and you'd expect to pay more for a taxi departing from the airport, soUS 55 doesn't sound too unreasonable (assuming that's the total and not per person).
