    • Safety in Mindoro?

      Philippines Oct 12, 2016 at 12:03 AM

My 15 year old son (who knows everything about everything because he's 15!) has been invited to spend 2 weeks over Christmas with a school friend's family on the Island of Mindoro. After reading the British Embassy advice not to travel to Southern Philippines, of course as a mum I am so worried about the whole of the Philippines. Do you think it is very safe - I'd really love him to have this experience, but obviously not if he is in any danger at all? Thanks.

Philippine immigration officers/airlines about one way ticket

      Philippine May 18, 2015 at 5:13 AM

I am going to Vietnam next month and plan to book a one way ticket since it is not really an issue in Vietnam airport. I will have 3 months single entry tourist visa. The question is, will the airlines or immigration officer here in Manila airport ask me about my return ticket? I am not a first time traveler; I've been to different parts in Asia and New Zealand but I don't remember if the IO asked for my return ticket (hehe). I am actually confused. Expats in Vietnam are telling me that's its alright to book one way ticket. No one asked them about their return flight when they go there but of course it's case by case. One of them told me that they booked a return flight but it was put to waste. Can any Filipino answer me or any knowledgeable citizen out there? :) I plan to extend my stay OR I might go to New Zealand from Vietnam(I will apply working visa in NZ Embassy in Vietnam). Any thoughts? Should I just buy round trip ticket instead? I'm thinking its a waste of money but I don't know. Thank you everyone!

    • Which beach to visit???

      Philippine Nov 7, 2014 at 6:12 AM

We will be making first trip to Philippines come Feb. We only have 11 days there. We are thinking start with 3-4 days in Boracay then wanting to visit a beautiful beach not too touristy we don't care about night life, electricity would be nice and a warm shower comfy bed, good snorkeling if possible right from the beach were staying at. I look at El Nido but it reads like a long travel day to get there and were short on time. Thoughts on Coron area as we can fly there. thanks in advance for any and all suggestions!

What exactly am I eating ?

      Philippine Mar 28, 2014 at 4:43 AM

I'd like to visit the Philippines for a two week holiday with my family. So I decided to do some online browsing about the the Philippines and came across an article (Below) that horrified me. It concerns the common practice of torturing, killing and eating dogs and cats. My question is : If I take the family out to a restaurant and order beef, lamb or pork, how can I be sure that I'm not being served dog or cat instead ? .......................................................... PHILIPPINES: DOG MEAT CRUELTY IN EVERY WAY: this dog is having it’s SHOULDER’S RIPPED OUT OF THEIR SOCKETS by the brutal cruelty inflicted on it by it’s new owner: a dog eater who sees it as nothing more than a ‘MEAL’ Before being carried like a bag, the dog was already in considerable pain from having it’s FRONT LEGS WRENCHED BACKWARDS AND TIED UP ONTO IT’S SPINE, which is completely unnatural for a dog. It’s hind legs were also bound tightly. The DOG’S MOUTH was bound tightly shut then an old TIN CAN JAMMED ON IT’S FACE. The Philippines has a hot climate (you can see the men are wearing sandals) and dogs NEED TO PANT TO COOL THEIR BODY TEMPERATURE. The dog must have gone through tremendous panic and overheating, through terror and not being able to cool itself and lower it’s stress. (The photo was taken a few years ago in a PHILIPPINES DOG MEAT MARKET.) Recently, a friend of mine LIVED IN THE PHILIPPINES FOR TWO YEARS and every Wednesday afternoon their next door neighbour would HANG A LIVE DOG UP, beat it with a club as it screamed BLOOD CURDLING SCREAMS of agony, then the man would start skinning the dog before it was even dead. He would then boil it and his family would eat it. The screams of the dog would have my friend and her FAMILY CRYING AND DISTRAUGHT INSIDE THEIR HOUSE, reeling in horror at what what happening. Because the neighbour was doing this outside, not only would they HEAR THE SCREAMS OF THE DOG and the thud of the dog being brutalised but the SMELL would also waft over to them. Dog meat has a particularly pungent stench. My friend and her family began leaving their house on Wednesday’s to try and avoid the horror but that was not always possible. Eventually they MOVED TO ANOTHER HOUSE because they could not bare what was considered “normal.” This has NOTHING TO DO WITH “CULTURAL TRADITIONS.” That is a MANTRA that’s used as an excuse for animal cruelty. The Philippines government has LAWS IN PLACE THAT NEED TO BE ENFORCED RATHER THAN IGNORED. The dog meat trade is outlawed in the Philippines but it definitely STILL EXISTS, even with authorities arresting dog traffickers from time to time.

      ATMs in the Philippines

Are ATMS becoming more common in the Philippines? Are they common in the bigger cities now? I was there 2 years ago and didn't see any ATMs. But I never really looked hard for them either. I have been always using the many money changers.

      Weather in May for Vigan

      Philippine Mar 29, 2009 at 4:51 PM

      Hi VT'ers,
Just a simple question on the weather. We're intending to be travelling to Vigan in the first 2 weeks of May. I know that currently in Manila, there is still rain. What is to be expected for the region where Vigan is on the north west coast?
Can we still expect to be doing beach type stuff in early May? I was told that rain will be present until at least end of July on the mainland.

Lastly, any recommendations for reasonable accomodations - pensionnes, BnB's or hotels fine. As long as it's between 1-2K pesos per night. I prefer family run places for intimacy and that personal touch.

      Look forward to your feedback.

      Cheers Chucky.

Mt. Pulag, what are the things needed? what to wear? accomodation?food?

Province of Benguet Oct 20, 2008 at 5:42 PM

Hi! Im not sure if im in the correct province, nevertheless, im posting in both mt province and in benguet for this.

We are going to mt province this Nov 15-17. I am not sure what to bring and what to wear since its my first time to go there. Is it same as sagada, battad or banaue? these are the only places ive been to when it comes to trekking/hiking in benguet/mt province.

Also, im not confident enough that im in the perfect shape for this, would you recommend ambangeg trail? according to the blogs, this is the easiest trail. but would i be missing a lot of fun if ill be trailing on this?

Do they have inns or tent rentals in mt pulag? how about food? and comfort rooms?

      Would really appreciate your feedbacks.

      Thanks again!

Best Beach for family holiday in January

      Philippine Oct 31, 2007 at 6:33 AM

We would like to spent January 08 holiday on a beach. At least 2-3 weeks. We don't know where would be the best. We will take our 1yo child and her grandma... I guess we look for something like a resort or a calm beach. We still need the pubs in the evenings :)...and so everyone will be happy.
We won't fix a budget but should be average, variations are tolerated though. We will highly appreciate any advises, as we want to make it nice.
      From Shanghai, with thanks !
