From Skyros to Karystos on Evia end of september

I will be on Skyros for 1 week, then go by ferry to Kymi on Evia.
      My destination is Karystos.
I planned to stay 1 night in Chalkida, as there will be no busconnection to Karystos from Kymi.
Or will it be better to spend 1 night in Eretria ?
Will the bus from Kymi to Chalkida / Athens stop in Eretria ?
Will the bus from Chalkida to Karystos stop in Eretria ?

      Insider Beach Info

Corfu Island Jul 5, 2016 at 6:21 AM

      Hello VTers,

I'm planning a trip to Corfu this month and seeking a must-see beach or two. We are staying in the north-west and want to avoid the most frequented places while still having access to an organized beach with chairs and umbrellas (or, if not, shade). As the lists online are extensive and we are only there a week, any recommendations of a place or two are welcome.

(On Crete, voulisma beach was perfect, in case that's a useful reference point.)

Looking forward to hearing people's favourites!

    • Q2: Paros in May

      Paros Jul 4, 2016 at 10:51 AM

thinking of travelling to Paros for 7-10 days next may. Will be the last 4 or 5 days of May and then the same in June.

Will probably be Nouassa or maybe Pariaki. How busy will these towns be.....will it be a little empty that early in the season? Nouassa harbour looks like a lovely place to go for a meal for example but will we be the only ones there?

I guess the same applies for the respective shopping districts. Will they be open/will people be about. Ive been to places before that early and they have felt a little ghost towny.

      Sorry if stupid questions!!

      Thanks

      Greece in Late September

      Greece Jul 26, 2016 at 8:49 AM

I a seasoned European traveler but this will be my first time in Greece. I am looking at going in late September into first week of October. I thought I would start with a few days in Athens to hit the typical locations that you must see the first time in Athens. But then I would like to head out to the islands for a bit of R&R. I like to be fairly active and will do some hikes and generally wander around as I am not one for a schedule. Any suggestions of which islands to check out, things to do and places to hand out with more locals than tourists. I am familiar with the islands that everyone knows such as Corfu, Mykonos and Crete but would not limit myself to them. Always looking for that diamond in the rough.

      Trip to Greece

      Greece 7 hours ago

      Hello VTers,

We are planning a trip to Greece next month and I have a few questions.

      1. We will fly with Aegean airlines, if possible with hand luggage only. Are they very strict in this sense? Will I be able to carry a bag besides a small suitcase?

Once in Greece we will rent a car and go across Macedonia. There are some "must see" places such as Thessaloniki, Pella, Vergina, Philippos, Kavala, Xanthi... But we dont have a concret plan for every day.

      2. We would like to take a boat trip around mount Athos. Is it easy to find tickets from Ouranoupolis?

      3. We read recently a report about some excavations in Estagira. Are they worth a visit?

      4. We would also like to do some trekking and visit some picturesque villages. Epiro and the Zagorohoria must be wonderful, but I am afraid this would mean long drives. Could anyone recommend some places in central Macedonia instead?

Although we are doing our research, I would appreciate your suggestions.

      Thanks in advance

    • Help with itinerary

      Greece Jul 23, 2016 at 9:25 PM

Hi! My parents, Aunt, cousin and I plan to travel to Greece for two weeks early this October. I need some much needed help with the itinerary! Trip begins in Athens and ends in Santorini. This is what I have in mind at the moment. Athens- 3 nights, Delphi- 1 night, Meteora/ Kalambaka - 2 nights, Nafplio- 1 day, Chania (also visiting Loutro)- 2 nights, HERAKLION- 1 night, Santorini- 3 nights.

      1) I was wondering if 3 nights are too many for Athens?

      2) Is one day enough for Delphi?

      3) Is one day enough for Nafplio?

      4) Should I skip Heraklion? Isn't the Palace of Knossos the main attraction there? Considering we would have seen enough of ruins in Athens and Delphi?

Any advice apart from what I have asked would be greatly appreciated!

Corinth + Nafplio possible as a daytrip from Athens?

      Athens Jul 15, 2016 at 10:10 PM

I'm heading to Greece this November and starting to plan out our itinerary. We are thinking about 7 days Athens (+ some daytrips from Athens) and 4 days Santorini. Planned daytrips so far are Aegina, Corinth & Delphi. So far Aegina seems totally doable as a half-day, Delphi a little far but doable as a full-day, and Corinth a reasonable half-day. With a little Google Maps research, however, I see that Nafplio/Nafplion is only about another hour west of Corinth.

From what I've been reading, people suggest two days for Nafplio, but what I'm wondering is if it's possible to do a day trip to Corinth in the morning and Nafplio in the afternoon (or vice versa)? I don't really have set plans for what I want to do in Nafplio--just wander around and see the town and maybe the fortress. Is that doable? If so, what are my public transportation options between Corinth and Nafplio? How about hiring a car/taxi for the full day?

Thanks in advance for any help! :)

    • Booking train from Athens to Kalambaka

      Meteora Apr 5, 2016 at 2:30 PM

Hi all, my girlfriend and I plan on visiting Meteora from 12th-14th July 2016. We are scheduled to land in Athens Airport on 12th July at 09:30, and intend to head to Meteora immediately from the airport.

Looking at the Greek Railways website, we are looking to take three different trains: Train 4414 from Athens Airport to SKA (Rail center of Acharnes) 12:44 to 13:13 Train 56 from SKA (Rail center of Acharnes) to Palaeofarsalos 14:27 to 18:05 Train 591 from Palaeofarsalos to Kalambaka 18:31 to 19:25

However, trains 4414 and 591 both say "This train does not support seat reservations. You can buy a ticket for this train if and only if you have at least one seat reservation at some other part of your journey."

Does this mean that these trains are completely unavailable to me? Or can I buy tickets in person at Athens? What are the chances of the train tickets selling out if we buy them about 5 days before the trip in person at Athens?

      Thanks!

    • bus or train to Kalampaka?

HI, i'm planning to go to kalampaka from Athens this March. Rough itinerary will be take the walking tour that will finish about 1300H, spend some time in Athens. Later in the evening take a bus ride to Cape of Sounion (sunset view) then back to Athens.
I could not make up my mind which mode of transport is safe and cost effective for my sister and i to go to Kalampaka from Athens. Either catch the 2355H train to Kalampaka via Palaeofarsalor (30minutes transit before 1st train to Kalampaka) or take 2100H bus to Kalampaka via Trikala (arrive Trikala at 0130H, then take a bus from Trikala that depart at 0515H and will be arriving at Kalampaka roughly at 0630H.

I am trying to find out if it was made there by nuns and the significance of the number. All my relatives who went there are gone and I don't know who to ask. I thought it would be a lovely gift to hand down to my granddaughter who is being baptized this week.

    • How long in Meteora?

      Meteora Aug 7, 2012 at 6:19 PM

      Hi,
I am travelling on a four day tour in mid/late August that arrives in Meteora in the evening (from Delphi) and has the Monday morning in Meteroa before heading back to Athens. I don't think this will be enough time to really see Meteora so I was thinking of staying longer and making my way back to Athens by myself.

Plan A - stay for the afternoon and then catch the 5.32pm train back to Athens on that day (i.e. one full day to see Meteora)
Plan B - stay the afternoon and the following day and then catch the 5.32pm train back to Athens (i.e. two full days to see Meteora)

How long do you think I need to look at the monastries? Are there other sights that I should take the time to see in the area? Are the trains running at the moment?

      Thanks

Hi. We are a pilgrimage group. We will be taking a tourist bus. From an overnight stay in Kalambaka, we plan to explore the Meteora monasteries only for the whole morning. Then Lunch. Then we depart for Athens at 1:00 P.M. We plan to make a brief stop in Delphi. Then on to Athens for an evening panoramic tour of key sites of Athens. Then we stay overnight in Athens. Is that a workable schedule for one day? We are a group of 35, some elderly. We appreciate your critique of this trip. Thank you so much!

We are planning a trip to Greece for Christmas break. Does anyone know what the weather is likely to be and if things will be open at this time? We'd like to stay a few days in the area.

    • Stop between Athens and Meteora?

      Meteora Jun 6, 2010 at 2:12 PM

Next month our family (no small children) will be driving from Athens to Meteora. We won't be in a hurry and are trying to decide on a brief stop to break up the trip and make it more pleasant. Any recommendations on what is worth the stop for a meal, a pleasant walk, or some other diversion? Lamia looks to be halfway but we aren't sure there is much there. Thanks in advance!

    • Great Meteora, open or close?

      Meteora Mar 7, 2010 at 4:08 PM

Hi. I am planning to visit Meteora the 10th. of June. I read that Great Meteora is closed Tuesday and Wednesday in winter; and only closed on Tuesday in summer. Do they consider June 10 summer or they stick to the calendar? Thank you. David.

How do I get from Kalambaka to the monasteries? I am planning on taking a train from Athens to Kalambaka on a Tuesday morning (march 16) and then touring at least 2 monasteries the next morning before heading back to Athens again. Can someone help me with train times for the two days and also how do I get to the monasteries once I am in Kalambaka? is there a bus? or do I take a taxi?
Organized tours from Athens are expensive 180 euros.

      Please help!!!
