      Bus from Tirana to Meteora

      Meteora Feb 13, 2017 at 12:48 PM

I am hoping to take a bus from Tirana in Albania to the Meteora Monasteries in Greece. I think the towns near the monasteries are called Kalambaka (or Kalabaka) and Kastraki. Does anyone have any information on timetables, etc?

Thanks in advance for any information, it will be very much appreciated.

      Corinth Canal

      Corinth Feb 13, 2017 at 11:03 AM

First of all apologies if someone has already answered these questions. I reviewed all the reports I could find about the Corinth Canal, but some were quite old, so I am hoping to get the best current info.

I am hoping to visit the Corinth Canal around late March or early April, preferably on a day trip from Athens using public transport, a bus or a train.

My first choice would be to take a tour boat along the canal if there is one available from Isthmia or Corinth. Does anyone have any information on availability of canal tour boats? There was a youtube video clip of someone doing this sort of tour, but it is from 2009. I don't know if the tour is still available or where to get the boat if it is still operating.

      youtube.com/watch?v=...

My second choice would be to see the canal from the bridge, but I'm not sure if the bus or the train would stop anywhere near the bridge. The bridge is about 9km from Corinth. Does anyone have a good suggestion for how to get to the bridge over the canal for someone using public transport?

Thanks in advance for any information on this.

Island recommendations for 2 weeks in the Cyclades

      Greece Feb 12, 2017 at 8:46 AM

After 2.5 years of travelling in India, Australia and Southeast Asia, my boyfriend (33, British) and I (28, German) have now settled down in Berlin and want to explore some more of Europe. Hence we're very excited to be visiting Greece for the first time this year and are looking for some destination advice.

We're flying to Athens on 7th June, then on to Santorini early on 8th June (my birthday), and back from Athens on 21st June. We're planning to spend around 3 days / 2 nights in Santorini and would probably like to visit another 2 islands in the Cyclades before heading back to Athens for the final 2-3 days. Is this feasible for a 2-week trip?

I've checked out plenty of websites and have a few ideas but still unsure of which islands to include. We enjoy pristine, uncrowded (preferably not windy) beaches, local food, nature/scenery, some history/culture and some nightlife (bars rather than clubs). We could hire a car or scooters if required. I've included Santorini on the itinerary as I understand this is a must-see for first-time visitors to the Cyclades, but would also like to include some cheaper, less crowded places. Which islands would you recommend?

Do we need to book hotels in advance or can we rock up with backpacks and find something decent on the day (Athens, Santorini, other islands)? What about ferries between islands, do we need to book these in advance? Can you recommend any affordable hotels with views of the caldera in Santorini? Is it easy to get public transport from the airport? Any advice relevant to our trip would be much appreciated.

      Thanks in advance!
      Nicole

      Greece Yesterday

We plan to visit Greece in early April. Of course the islands are on our itinerary. Can anyone local advise us if we need to reserve ferry tickets before we fly there, ir we can buy on spot on the day we travel in order to allow flexibility?

Best days to visit Meteora Monasteries

      Meteora Feb 14, 2017 at 10:22 PM

I was wondering if any days are better or worse than others for visiting the monasteries at Meteora. For example, Sunday might be a bad day to visit, but there could be other days when the monks have a different routine to normal.

Transfer from N Kazantsakis Airport to Rethymno

      Rethymno Dec 15, 2015 at 6:31 PM

Hi, was wondering if the procedure for public transport from the Airport in Heraklion to Rethymno is still the same? My research indicates: you can catch a public bus from the airport (marked IPAKLIO) to the main bus station, and from there catch the KTEL bus (marked XANIA) to Rethymnon. Is that still correct?
Any confirmation or alternate advice would be much appreciated.
      Thanks!

Name of restaurant on Beach Rd.

      Rethymno Oct 26, 2012 at 7:47 PM

Does anyone know the name of the restaurant that is 2 doors from the Kriti Beach Hotel on the beach road. I'm guessing the address is El. Venizelou 2. It was very near to the Living Room Lounge. I believe it is "something" cafe that serves greek food. We had a lovely lunch there this past summer and I want to put it on my blog and Trip Advisor.

Planning at very last minute, have bought a travel guide, but unable to find too much info!!

I'm arriving in Crete on Thursday morning, and will be based in Rethymnon for 10 days. Could you kindly advise recommended day trips that we could take?

Also, would like to plan at least a day trip, perhaps overnight in Santorini whilst we're there, could you please post links to the various travel options? Is it a ferry or a flight away?

      Also, how's the shopping?

      Thanks all

      what's it like now?

      Rethymno May 26, 2005 at 4:21 AM

i spent a year in rethymnon in 1987/1988. i taught english at the paragioudakis frontisterion and stayed in a rent room in the old part of the city. my reminiscinces are that although the place was lovely, the winter was pretty grim (wet & windy - just like my native brighton). i used to spend most of my time with the other ex-pats at the why not? bar, sunshine bar, sunset bar (round the city wall), and tasos restaurant on the front, stelios restaurant near the town hall, together with the occasional visit to plakias and georgiopolis.

are any of these places still going? i loved it in the summer, and also the students i taught.

Rent Rooms Sea Front: Know anything about it?

      Rethymno Apr 4, 2005 at 10:18 AM

Of all the budget hotels in Rethymnon, the only one I can find a valid email address or web site for is Rent Rooms Sea View. For 35 Euros a night it seems like a good deal, though there's no way for me to compare that price to others in town because they are apparently not connected to the internet in any way. If anyone knows anything about this place I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks. Here's the web site they have: rethymnoatcrete.com/seafront...

Hotel recommendation? How long should I stay?

      Rethymno Mar 28, 2005 at 8:22 AM

After seeing Knossos and the archeological museum in Heraklion, I plan to take the bus to Rethymnon and spend at least one night there before driving down to Plakias for a few nights and then to the southwest part of Crete for the remainder of my visit. I will probably arrive in Rethymnon in the evening. Can someone recommend a good but inexpensive hotel there?

Also, is one night enough in Rethymnon or should I stay a second night so I can spend a full day there before heading south? I don't want to be in too big of a hurry, but I also don't want to miss anything if it's worth staying longer. Normally I would not try planning things like this but I need to know when to have my rental car reserved. Thanks.

      Elafonissos

Prefecture of Rethymno May 19, 2003 at 11:33 AM

How long would it take to drive from Chania to Elafonissos? From past experience on Crete, I've learned never to try and figure distances based on klms. Last time I drove the dirt road to Preveli beach... only six km which took about 2 hours and it was such a disappointment to find out at the end of the road that I still had to climb the mountain to get over the other side (which I didn't) or pay the ferryman a handsome sum to take me there (which I also didn't as I hadn't thought to bring enough money with me...) Is Elafonissos worth the trip? Any other must see places en route? Thanks in advance!

      Local paper for jobs/housing?

Prefecture of Rethymno May 19, 2003 at 11:28 AM

Hello all Could someone inform me if there is a local paper in Rethymno which carries job and accommodation adverts? If so, which is its day of circulation? We will be down in Rethymnon next week 27-30/5/03 to attend an interview but I would like to make good use of my time and try to arrange a couple more job interviews. Any idea of the cost of living in Rethymnon? I.e. how much to rent a dyari (one bed flat), how much to budget for food and utilities, and so on? I hope there will be some students there with up to date information or some foreigner workers with great tips! Awaiting your comments... :)
