      Bus from Tirana to Meteora

      Meteora Feb 13, 2017 at 12:48 PM

I am hoping to take a bus from Tirana in Albania to the Meteora Monasteries in Greece. I think the towns near the monasteries are called Kalambaka (or Kalabaka) and Kastraki. Does anyone have any information on timetables, etc?

Thanks in advance for any information, it will be very much appreciated.

      Corinth Canal

      Corinth Feb 13, 2017 at 11:03 AM

First of all apologies if someone has already answered these questions. I reviewed all the reports I could find about the Corinth Canal, but some were quite old, so I am hoping to get the best current info.

I am hoping to visit the Corinth Canal around late March or early April, preferably on a day trip from Athens using public transport, a bus or a train.

My first choice would be to take a tour boat along the canal if there is one available from Isthmia or Corinth. Does anyone have any information on availability of canal tour boats? There was a youtube video clip of someone doing this sort of tour, but it is from 2009. I don't know if the tour is still available or where to get the boat if it is still operating.

      youtube.com/watch?v=...

My second choice would be to see the canal from the bridge, but I'm not sure if the bus or the train would stop anywhere near the bridge. The bridge is about 9km from Corinth. Does anyone have a good suggestion for how to get to the bridge over the canal for someone using public transport?

Thanks in advance for any information on this.

Island recommendations for 2 weeks in the Cyclades

      Greece Feb 12, 2017 at 8:46 AM

After 2.5 years of travelling in India, Australia and Southeast Asia, my boyfriend (33, British) and I (28, German) have now settled down in Berlin and want to explore some more of Europe. Hence we're very excited to be visiting Greece for the first time this year and are looking for some destination advice.

We're flying to Athens on 7th June, then on to Santorini early on 8th June (my birthday), and back from Athens on 21st June. We're planning to spend around 3 days / 2 nights in Santorini and would probably like to visit another 2 islands in the Cyclades before heading back to Athens for the final 2-3 days. Is this feasible for a 2-week trip?

I've checked out plenty of websites and have a few ideas but still unsure of which islands to include. We enjoy pristine, uncrowded (preferably not windy) beaches, local food, nature/scenery, some history/culture and some nightlife (bars rather than clubs). We could hire a car or scooters if required. I've included Santorini on the itinerary as I understand this is a must-see for first-time visitors to the Cyclades, but would also like to include some cheaper, less crowded places. Which islands would you recommend?

Do we need to book hotels in advance or can we rock up with backpacks and find something decent on the day (Athens, Santorini, other islands)? What about ferries between islands, do we need to book these in advance? Can you recommend any affordable hotels with views of the caldera in Santorini? Is it easy to get public transport from the airport? Any advice relevant to our trip would be much appreciated.

      Thanks in advance!
      Nicole

We plan to visit Greece in early April. Of course the islands are on our itinerary. Can anyone local advise us if we need to reserve ferry tickets before we fly there, ir we can buy on spot on the day we travel in order to allow flexibility?

Best days to visit Meteora Monasteries

      Meteora Feb 14, 2017 at 10:22 PM

I was wondering if any days are better or worse than others for visiting the monasteries at Meteora. For example, Sunday might be a bad day to visit, but there could be other days when the monks have a different routine to normal.

Hi, I'm planning on taking my two young children to Stoupa next year for 2 weeks staying at Evi apartments. They will be 18 months and 3 at the time, just wondering if there's any play parks or play areas for them. Just returned from Crete where even the cafes and restaurants had play areas in so we were very spoiled. Thankyou in advance.

      Six days in the Peloponnese

      Kalamata Jul 1, 2014 at 4:02 AM

      Hello.

I'll be traveling to Greece at the end of july. While I have to be in Athens on august 1, I got an earlier flight and I will land in Kalamata on july 26, which was cheaper. Once I'm there I have decided to use the days before going to Athens to explore the Peloponnese peninsula.

I understand Kalamata is a big city, but not particullary attractive, so I was wondering if this is the best place to stay or if it would be better for me to travel and find a hostel in another town. I am interested in knowing all the archeological sites, specially Olympia, and would like a place from where I can easily move around the zone. is it better to stay in one city and do daytrips from there? or is better to go moving along and spending a night or two in different places?

Also which places do you recommend me to see, while history is my main concern, I am also open to any other kind of cultural attractions.

      Thanks.

      best beaches

      Kalamata Aug 9, 2013 at 1:15 PM

      Hello,
I will be in mostly Kalamata based around Messinia for 10 days from the beginning of september. I'm really very like to swim and sunbath in the beaches mostly pebbles and stones. I heard about the Foneas beach is perfect and of course I will be there. I'm asking if there are other beaches like Foneas (hidden paradise) around? I think transportation will not a big problem cause I also booked a car, so I can reach the places easily if I well informed and planned the schedule before...

      Thanks by now,

      Lara

    • Vacation in Kalamata

      Kalamata Mar 4, 2011 at 4:36 AM

I have been invited to join a cooking vacation near Kalamata (Agios Nicholaus) in Greece this August and was wondering if anyone can suggest which are the beaches to visit, if the area is touristic (I hope not) and if its more for couples or families, is it a younger 20's, 30-50's or an older crowd. Are the people who stay there mostly Greek, European, etc? I'd just like to get a feel for what it's like there.

Any other information you'd like to share will be most welcome.

The photos I've seen on the internet are wonderful but I have not found much more.

      Thank you.

      Kalamata to Athens Airport

      Kalamata Jun 17, 2010 at 9:18 AM

      Hello to all -

My wife and I fly out of Athens at 14.30 on a Tuesday. I have looked at an Athens Long Distance bus schedule and it appears that buses to Athens leave at 4.45, 6.00, and 7.00. Do you think we can make it from Stoupa to Kalamata to Athens in time for the plane? I know it would be a push, but we are trying to have one last night in the Peloponnese, rather than spending it in Athens. Even if we had to get an early taxi from Stoupa to Kalamata or something other than the bus. Can we make it to the airport for our flight?

      Thanks for all the advice!
      - Ryan

As Denise and I are driving to Stoupa in our motorhome for the first time, in mid-June, I wondered if anyone has met or knows the whereabouts of Jim Boardman of Rugby, Warwickshire.
Its down to him that Stoupa is our destination this year, he first told me about the place in the mid `80s when we both worked at Radio Rentals in Leicester.
Would be great to meet up with him again.

      Camping close to Kardhamili

      Kardhamili May 13, 2010 at 10:07 AM

      Hello to All -

My wife and I will be coming to the Kardhamili area in late June by bus from Athens (via Nafplio) with nothing but a couple of backpacks and a tent. We are looking for a campsite that is close to Kardhamili. Doesn't have to be big or anything special, just a place to set down our tent and sleep. We are planning on moving around a lot during the day and not being so much at the campground. I have looked online and found Kalogria campsite in Stoupa and Delifina in Neo Proastio. I was wondering if anyone else knew of these and could offer thoughts or had any other suggestions, and how easy it is to get from these campsites to Kardhamili and other surrounding areas without a car. Also, what might be the best way to get from Nafplio to Kardhamili by bus (or train). Thank you!!

      Hi from Australia,

Will be staying in a small villa about 6kms from Koroni for 3 months. Although there will be many opportunities to sample the meals on offer in local tavernas, I am interested in how the current financial situation in Greece is affecting the prices of "everyday" food goods available in supermarkets.

Thanks for any help VTers may be able to give.
