    • How would you spend 10 hours in Unalaska?

      Dutch Harbor 10 hours ago

My husband, son (2.5 years old), and I will be visiting Dutch Harbor in September on a cruise ship. We have contacted Bobbie (Extra Mile Tours) for a tour but have not heard back from her yet. As a plan B, we are thinking of renting a car for the day. Can anyone recommend an itinerary or places not to miss?

We love driving through beautiful scenery, stopping for photographs, viewing wildlife in their natural habitat, and learning about different cultures. I read in a previous post that Captain's Bay Road is a great place for whale watching. We were thinking about stopping at the Holy Ascension of Our Lord Christ. What else?

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Myrtle Beach Jul 3, 2016 at 7:55 AM

Help! I am about to drive 10 hrs to Myrtle Beach for July 4th. I had previously had a reservation at the Sea Mist Hotel. Upon reading the reviews, and noticed many complaints about roaches, I quickly cancelled my reservation and searched for another place. I saw good reviews for the Compass Cove Hotel and I booked there. Today, I read reviews on Trip Adviser and while many were good, I saw numerous complaints about maid service and ROACHES. I am PETRIFIED of bugs to the point that I have an exterminator every 3 weeks including the cold PA winters. Has anyone been there and experienced this? Do people in Myrtle Beach not like cleaning or something? I'm so confused

    • Moving to Miami from Cincinnati, Ohio

Miami Beach Jul 21, 2016 at 11:36 AM

      Hi Guys,

I am originally from Lima, Peru and have been living in Cincinnati for almost 15 years. I am currently 24, and I speak Spanish and English (so moving to Miami wouldn't be a problem in that category). I currently have an associate's degree in Civil Engineering and will be graduating from UC next spring with a Bachelors of Science in Architecture. My goal is to move to Miami right after graduation but I'm a little concerned about finding a job in my career? I frequently visit Miami at least once a year every year and I absolutely love it! I love the culture, the food, the weather and the beach! How easy or how difficult would it be for me? What do you guys suggest that I do before I move down there? It would be me, my boyfriend and our two german shepherds moving down :)

      Thanks!

    • Feedback/Suggestions needed for Portland/Seattle Trip

      Seattle Jul 21, 2016 at 1:49 PM

The plan is to fly into Portland or Seattle and fly out of the other city.
We will rent a car and want to definitely see the highlights that are most reasonable given our time constraints.
I've heard the Oregon coast is amazing. Also heard about the hiking in the gorge!
As for Washington - I know the winery Chateau St Michelle is nearby - that may be more doable.
My boyfriend has never been to Seattle so I want him to see the market etc.
But I would also love to see some of the whales and not sure if trying to squeeze in any of the islands is worth it or reasonable.
We are foodies and hope to experience the each city for atleast a day a half plus some excursions.
Any suggestions you can offer about routes to take - things to see and do and or a reasonable itinerary for 7 days is awesome. We don't want to come home exhausted but we also aren't afraid to pack a lot into a day and want some unique experiences that we can't have in other states!
      Thank you!

    • Travelling from Miami to St Pete... Public transport v Car hire?

      Florida Jul 3, 2016 at 6:53 AM

      Hi!

I've been reading some of the discussions on here about travelling around in Florida.

I'm going to be staying in Miami Beach, then heading up to St. Pete Beach. Is there any easy way that this can be done using public transport? I suspect from the discussions I've read so far, the answer is no, but I thought I'd have one last check!

If travelling by car is the best option, are there any particular hire companies that have been tried and tested by participants on these forums?

And finally, are there towns/cities on the way up that I should definitely stop in (not to stay necessarily, but just to see or take a day trip to during the week)? Naples, Venice and Sarasota have been recommended.

And in St. Pete.... any things that shouldn't be missed, based on your own experiences? This can include things to do, places to see or places to eat/drink!

      Thanks in advance!

My question is about the transportation, what is the best way for us to get around?? My question is about a trip I have planned to Jacksonville (FL) from Madrid. I am looking at a flight from MAD to Philadelphia, then change and fly onto JAX. I want to know if I can end my journey at Philadelphia as I fancy driving down through the Carolinas. The deal I have with this return trip is less than half the price if I flew direct from MAD to Philadelphia. Would there be a problem at immigration? What happens to the luggage - I've done mulit stop trips before and once the initial check in is done, I have not seen my bags until reaching the final destination. Thanks and regards.

Hi, All. My boyfriend and I are taking a trip to Northeastern USA in the beginning of April 2015. We will be flying into PHL, then NYC, then BOS. The entirety of the trip will be 10 days.

I've been looking at previous forum questions and looked on www.visitphilly.com (very useful website!), and wanted to know how many days VTers would recommend spending in Philly. We are trying to figure out how many days to allot to each city (with as many days as we can in NYC). I know it's a tough question to answer, as it's all dependent on individual tastes, but what are your recommendations to hit the typical "top sites" of the "City of Brotherly Love".

We are in our 30's, love culture and food, and seeing the beautiful sites and landmarks of a city. We will definitely hit the historic area, South Philly, and the multitude of museums available.

      Thanks in advance!

      Cross-Penn trip

by HarmoniousBotch Online Now Sep 3, 2013 at 4:45 PM

Wife and I are planning a trip to Pennsylvania. I'd like some advice on how to schedule it.

For us, the must sees are:

      • Lib bell, constitution hall, etc in downtown Phily
      • Museums: Franklin, Rodin, etc in Phily
      • Some Amish communities - wife currently prefers Lancaster
      • The helicopter museum near West Chester
      • Falling Water by Wright
      • The National Aviary and Carnegie museum in Pittsburg

We fly into Philly on Friday the 18th of October. I have to be in Chicago for a convention on the afternoon of the 27th. We are assuming that the most practical way to get around is public transportation in downtown Philadelphia, and then rent a car for the rest.

The proposed schedule looks like this:

18: Fly into Phily; night - Stay in Phily

19: Day - Phily; night - Stay in Phily

20: Day - Phily; night - Stay in Phily

21: Day - Phily; Afternoon - rent car, drive to Lancaster; Night - Stay in Lancaster

22: Day - Lancaster; Night - Stay in Lancaster

      23: Day - see heli museum ( 44 mi ) { Open Wed-Sun }; Afternoon - drive to Somerset ( 111 mi ) { Scenic: Exton bypass aka 30 }; Night - Stay in Somerset ( The Georgian Inn? )

24: Day - Drive to Pittsburg, see Falling Water on the way; Afternoon - see museums in Pittsburg; Night - Stay in Pittsburg

26: Day - See Aviary, more museums in Pittsburg; Evening - Drive Pitts to Toledo ( 233 mi );  Night - Stay in Toledo

27: Day - Drive Toledo to Chicago ( 246 mi ); Afternoon - arrive Chicago; Night - Stay in Chicago

      Particular questions are:

      • Is Lancaster a good place to get the flavor of the Amish communities?
      • Where is a good place to stay in/near downtown Philly at $250 or less per night?
      • Is the Georgian in Somerset as nice as it pretends to be?
      • How long should we need to see Falling Water?

Any general advice would also be appreciated, particularly as to scenic byways, good hotels, and good restaurants. ( BTW, for me both a good view and good food are necessary for a good restaurant. )

      Thanks

Must Do's in Philly in 1 day

by BlindFish Online Now Aug 7, 2013 at 11:29 PM

Yes, i know these questions suck, although in my case it is a bit different.

It's not that there wouldn't be a lot of things to discover in just one day, but from studying my travel guides i suppose many of these things not to be that thrilling for a (nearly) blind guy like i am. So at this time i am not sure if it's worth standing in line for the Independence Hall to finally see some documents i can't really see, indead. But - as said - it's just the impression i got from reading about it, so maybe you could change my mind on that.

What about the bell? OK, it's just a bell, of course. But it's big and i might be able to get close enough to see it (touch it? ... wasn't there an episode of HIMYM where they were licking at the bell ...).

We are really interested in history and want to get the most out of our first (and maybe only) Philly experience. But museums, wall charts and displays won't make a big deal as i cannot read them and my wife speaks and understands much too little of the language to be helpful in this case (although she never gives up trying :-) ).

So my basic idea was to walk as much of the city as we can and hope to catch something of the spirit and making some shots for the memories. I've thought about a carriage ride for the day of our arrival to give us a rough idea where we want to go for more detailed excursions and i guess we's sign up for a food tour on our second day as a dinner replacement and for getting some information, too.

What do you think? Will we regret not to visit and see all of the common sights? Any other suggestions?

      Hello everybody,

We, party of two, are to visit the beautiful city of Philadelphia for a few days in september. We're traveling by car and staying in the city center. What would be a safe and affordable place to park our car for two days..?

      Thanks in advance,

      greetings from the Netherlands, Tony.

My wife and daughter are attending conference June 28-30, 2013. What other hotel options are within a block? Is this area of town safe for two ladies traveling alone?
