    • Should I make a 7 hour drive from Vegas to Tombstone?

      Tombstone 14 hours ago

Am doing a road trip from Las Vegas to Chicago and want to visit Santa Fe. Before that though, I am very keen to detour down to Tombstone for some authentic Wild West history. It's a 7 hour drive from Vegas and I was planning on staying 2 nights-the first to recover from the drive, then the next day, seeing what Tombstone has to offer. Would I be wasting my time? Should I just go on to Santa Fe? All opinions welcome!

    • Appreciate your comments/advice on proposed itinerary for Rim to Rim GC

Grand Canyon Jul 25, 2016 at 7:26 AM

Our family (myself, wife, 2 kids ages 16 and 13) are planning a Rim2Rim starting at North Rim on Aug 25 over 4 days. Given the very high heat, we plan to hike ~7-8 miles in early morn, then get to our destination, set up camp, rest, and do some short walks around the area. We are all fit and active, and the kids are used to long mountain hikes, although in fairness, not in this sort of heat. We are in no rush and want to enjoy this at a relatively leisurely pace.

      Our Itinerary is as follows:
      - Aug 25: hike from North Rim to Cottonwoods Campground. Then visit Ribbon Falls
      - Aug 26: Cottonwoods to Bright Angel CG. Lunch at Phantom Ranch. Short walk on Clear Creek Trail to Tonto Platform. Ranger program at Bright Angel CG.
      - Aug 27: Bright Angel CG to Indian Garden CG. Walk to Plateau Point for sunset
      - Aug 28: Indian Garden CG up to South Rim

      A few questions:
      1. We are planning to start by ~5am each morn and reach our destination by 10am. Is this early enough, or should we be looking to start even earlier? The two days where I am thinking earlier might be necessary are Day 2 (when we will across the Canyon through the Box) and Day 4 (when we are hiking up Bright Angel Trail).

      2. We are taking 2 tents - I know many folks do not, but given we are camping at the North Rim the night before we start, we don't really have a choice. We have purchased 2 fairly light tents (around 4-5lb each). And a bunch of other hiking accessories like Camelbak Water bladders, pocket stove, collapsible vessels, etc. Aim is to keep each backpack to 20lb max. Does that sound reasonable?

      3. Aside from the side trips above (Ribbon Falls, Clear Creek Trail, Plateau Point) and dipping in the Creek, are there any other things we can look to do while in the Canyon? e.g. other small hikes, activities, etc.

      4. We are not staying at the Phantom Ranch, but I am assuming we can buy lunch at the cafeteria - is that correct? Do we need a reservation?

      5. I expect to take a lot of video in this "trip of a lifetime". I have a couple of spare batteries for my camcorder, but do you think we could recharge at the Phantom Ranch? We are not staying there, but (say) do you think the Front desk could help us if we left our camcorder and charger with them while we have lunch there (subject to 4 above)?

      6. We've read a fair bit about the need to enrich our water supply (in bladders) with electrolyte powders. Any suggestions on whether we shd be doing that? if so recommendations? we also saw some electrolyte capsules out tehre to be taken with food but are confused how to take those safely so as to avoid depletion.

      Thx Vijay

    • Best area to Stay??

      Phoenix Jul 18, 2016 at 11:42 AM

We are planning a trip to Phoenix, Az. While there, we want to make a couple of day trips to Apache Junction and the Sonoran Desert. Which area of Phoenix would be the most convenient to stay, as far as easier access to these venues. We will only be there about 3 days before heading to another part of the state to see other points of interest. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Grand Canyon National Park Jul 22, 2016 at 6:05 AM

I am staying for two nights in Williams, Arizona, in order to visit the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. I would also like to hire a flight over the Canyon, but I need it to start from the South Rim, or a nearby location (i.e. Williams or Tusayan).

Can you recommend any companies that provide this service?

In July I going to be flying into page I was curious if there is public transportation (bus) that can take me from the airport to the Walmart? I had also had heard there is some kind of a shuttle service that will take you from I believe the airport to Wahweap Marina. can I receive some information on this. Also if you have some links to transportation that would be helpful. I wasn't interested in renting a car from Avis at the airport. I basically needed a one way trip to the marina.

My wife and I will be in the Page area around midday and would like to see Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe bend and Lake Powell. Is it better to pre-organise a tour of them or would it be easy enough to do ourselves in our hired car. Any suggestions of tours (if needed) would be appreciated.
We would like stay the night in the area and need to head off for Bryce early next morning. What is the best area to stay? Accomodation recommendations would be appreciated.

      Coyotte Buttes/The Wave

by michael89 Online Now May 15, 2009 at 4:57 AM

I was planning this stop on my trip but I've seen that this place is highly restricted (10 visitors/day). Should I plan it anayway and take the chance that I get the permit or not? Also if I was to get the permit how easy is it to trek to The Wave (I read that there was no indicated trail to get there). This place look fabulous and I wouldn't want to miss it but I think it would be more disapointing to plan it and not being able to get there. I hope some of you can help me.

      Antelope Canyon--2009 information

by SandiM Online Now Apr 21, 2009 at 12:45 PM

I will be in Page next week and want to visit Antelope Canyon. I visited in 2005 want to do it all over again with the proper camera! I seem to recall my mother and I simply drove southeast along Hwy 98 and pulled off the road into a parking lot. There, we paid20 and got loaded onto a flatbed truck by the guides and toted out to the canyon proper. There were no advance reservations etc etc. Is this still the same? I see that there are numerous websites saying that you need a guide and reservations etc etc, so what would happen if we once again simply drove off the road into the parking lot? Also, I wanted to do Water Holes Canyon in the same day--too much hassle? do I need a guide or is there a place to simply drive off the road, park, pay a fee and then see the Canyon? If so, can someone give me directions and I'll map it. Thanks!

by wderekjones Online Now Mar 8, 2008 at 9:36 AM

My wife and I will be in Page, Az in August 2008. A lot of hotels are sold out and we are considering staying at either the Quality hotel, or the Super 8 motel.

We've looked at some internet reviews, but most seem to have been written a while ago.

Does anyone have recent experience of staying at either of these motels?

      Many thanks.

I will be visiting Page area in about a week from now and I would appreciate some advises from you, fellow VTs:
      1. Can you recommend a local tour company for visiting the Antelope Canyon?
      2. I was told that Antelope Canyon is very crowded at noon and for appreciating the full beauty of such places, Canyon X should be preferred; is it true or just yet another marketing tale?
      3. For visiting the Rainbow Bridge, a reservation is essential or can it be done on spot - the same day or a day before? Any recommendations regarding the cruise and the last mile walk?
      4. Any other recommendations about Page area?
      Thank you,

Thank you so much for your very helpful responses to previous question.

Since it doesn't seem that I can do Lake Powell and Antelope Canyon in combination (we won't get to Page until 5:00 pm and leave early next morning for raft trip), should I do a boat tour on Lake Powell or the jeep tour to Antelope Canyon. Would it be cooler on the water? The temps are suppose to be over 100 when we are there.

by galge Online Now Jul 11, 2005 at 1:26 PM

Has anyone toured Antelope Canyon from the waterside? Lake Powell Resort offers a boat tour of Antelope Canyon. Everything I have read about the canyon, talks about walking into it. I cannot find anything about seeing it from the water.

I'd like to know whether the boat tour will be sufficient for seeing the canyon. That way, I could see Lake Powell and the canyon in one trip.

Posting it to the correct forum. Already posted in Las Vegas forum.

I am planning a trip towards memorial day with my wife and daughter. I wanted primarily to cover Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Zion and Bryce. I am going to Zion from Grand Canyon via Page/kanab. I am going for 9 days with 3 days in Vegas.

This is a mere sight-seeing trip and no hiking/trekking.

      - Is staying in Page for a day is enough to cover Rainbow Bridge and Glen Canyon.
      - Is there any other park nearby that I could cover
      - For Zion, which is the best place to stay?
      - For Bryce Canyon, Which is the best place to stay

Sorry for plethora of questions...Would appreciate any response.
