I am traveling for the first time with my family and friends (15 persons in total).

For 7 nights, we will sleep at Kashihara, Nara.

We are planning to have a two-day tour in Kyoto, one day tour in Kobe and Himeji, one day tour in Nara, and the rest in Osaka. Is Kansai Area Pass and Osaka Amazing Pass a good idea?

Any suggestions for the best PASS (or passes) to avail (or cheapest travel expense plan) for this itinerary?

cheapest way to travel and visit Tokyo and Kyoto from Los Angeles

      Kyoto Nov 12, 2016 at 1:35 PM

I am thinking of flying into Kyoto from Los Angeles and then departing from Tokyo. Originally, I was going to fly into Tokyo, visit a few days (I have 10 visiting vacation days) and then go to Kyoto and then return to Tokyo for my flight home. I have since found out how expensive it is to travel by train. I am looking into the JR pass which is $269 for 7 days. That is a good deal I believe. So, If fly into Osaka, take the train for $30 to Kyoto, then stay a few days there, then start the 7 day pass while there and use it to go to Tokyo and use it there for five days and then use it to go to the airport too to leave, is that a good economical idea? I have checked plane prices and there is about $100 increase in the flight to Osaka vs. Tokyo.

    • Best location for hiking in the Japanese Alps

      Matsumoto May 25, 2016 at 1:34 PM

I am going to travel to Japan in August (staying there for 10 days). I will land in Tokyo, which I have already visited in the past. This time I would like to visit the Japanese Alps, among other places. I am planning to spend 3 to 6 days there (not sure yet). What I am looking for is some small town / location in the mountains that:
      - Can be used as a good base for hiking. I am looking for easy hikes in a beautiful natural environment (with nice views, possibly). 5 hours long hikes maximum.
      - Is (possibly) a good example of rural, bucolic Japan.
      - It is located in the Japanese Alps (or, in general, in the Nagano/Gifu region)
Do you know what could be the place I am looking for?
I am having some difficulties in finding comprehensive information about similar locations. For now, I have found something about Chūbu-Sangaku National Park (Kamikōchi), Jōshinetsu Kogen National Park (Karuizawa, which seems to be a little more to the East with respect to the core of the Japanse Alps) and Takayama (which seems to be a little too far from the actual mountain hikes). Also Tsumago-juku seems to be attractive but not really close to the mountains. Can you suggest some of these? Do you have other suggestions?

      Thanks a lot!

    • Where can I purchase winter boots near Nagano train station?

      Nagano Jan 28, 2016 at 7:50 AM

      Hello,
I was hoping for some advice on where I can locate a good pair or non-slip winter boots or crampons within walking distance of Nagano station or near Jigokudani Monkey Park. My family and I will be visiting the Jigokudani Monkey Park. It is my understanding that the walk to the viewing area is sloped and possibly a little slippery. Any advice or information would be much appreciated.

      Cherry blossom?

      Matsumoto Mar 27, 2013 at 6:18 AM

Hi, I am interested to view cherry blossom in Japan, but I am told it is kind of late for some of the popular areas like the cities, Tokyo and Osaka, by the time I visit in 2nd week of April. I am told Nagano would be a good place, got chance, I checked Japan-guide.com and realized Matsumoto is one of the places for viewing cherry blossom even in April. I intend to travel to Nagano via Tokyo and I will make short trips to Matsumoto during the my stay at Nagano, does this sound good enough? I come from Singapore. Thanks.

      Nagano Feb 1, 2013 at 10:22 AM

My husband & I would like to spend a few nights in the Tsumago/Magome area en route from Kyoto to Tokyo at the end of May. Any suggestions of places to stay, eat and things do for a reasonable price (we plan to hike the trail between the two towns)? We are very open minded, flexible and are seeking a peaceful, traditional experience to end our rather whirlwind trip. We are also open to any suggestions of alternative places to go between K&T which would have an old Japan feel with a possibility for a hike in the countryside. All responses a very much appreciated.

    • Looking for someone to share a room with, snowboarding hakuba, nagano

      Nagano-ken Dec 25, 2012 at 4:13 PM

      Hi all!

Firstly I apologise if this isn't the right forum to post this sort of question, if you can give any advice or direct me where to go for this it would be much appreciated.

So I'm travelling to Japan (for the first time!) and am planning to go snowboarding for a few days, from Jan 26th-30th, in Hakuba, Nagano. However now I'm stuck with a 2 person room to myself, the cancellation fees are very high and it's a bit late to start trying to find new accommodation, else I would have gone to a backpackers, and so now I'm asking around to see if anyone would like to share the room with me and split the costs.

I'm a 22 year old Australian male and am not too picky about room mates and would be happy to share with about anyone, and also I'll be staying at the Hakuba-Allure.

If anyone would like further details, feel free to message me.

Sorry again if this is the wrong place! I wasn't sure whether or not this fell under advertising/solicitation.

    • Can we still snowboard in mid March?

      Nagano-ken Dec 10, 2012 at 11:50 PM

Few of us are planning a ski trip to Japan, and would like to explore other resorts outside Niseko. Flights to Tokyo are always easier to organise, so somewhere on honshu will be good.

      - Which resorts will still have decent snow/powder by early to mid March?
      - Preferably with good runs for both beginners to advanced snowboarders (ie no long flat runs please!)

      Thanks!

Need help with acommodation/spending the night!!!

      Nagano Mar 17, 2008 at 4:51 AM

Hi! Me and my girlfriend are travelling to Japan in May. On May 1st we want to go from Tokyo to Nagano to attend a concert. The problem is that the last Shinkansen runs at 21:40 and we´re likely not making it; but we can´t afford spending 10000 yen in a Business Hotel. Is there any alternative?? Anything is valid, from a Love Hotel to a Capsule (it has to accept a man and a woman), to a 24 hour internet place, to a Youth Hostel (with no curfew, obviously); better if near JR Nagano Station, as the venue of the show is near it.
Thank you very much for your help!!!

      Matsumoto and the Alps

      Matsumoto Sep 3, 2007 at 9:00 PM

My wife and myself will travel from Tokyo to Matsumoto (via Nagano) by train. We want to stay in Matsumoto or nearby for three days, hire a car and explore the area, going to Kamikochi, the Alps and to Kiso Valley. Then we go to Kyoto by train.

Would be helpful to hear from someone who knows the area or traveled there. We would like to find some nice (not too expensive) accommodation in Matsumoto or in the area, as a base. We would also welcome some tips on what to see within this time limit. We'd like to do some walking trips, but no longer than a few hrs.

      Thanks,
