    • 4-5 days in St Petersburg

Saint Petersburg Nov 16, 2016 at 7:19 AM

      Hi,

Would anybody have recommendations for things for c. 12 (academic) high school students to see in St Petersburg, or would it be worth going on a day trip out of the city? Is Valaam Monastery too far? We'll be going in the latter half of February 2017, and obviously we're most interested in the history and literature but I'm thinking maybe there might be some little-known spiritual place inside or outside the city that might be worth a visit?

All suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million.

Day (half day) trip out of town

      Moscow Nov 20, 2016 at 10:25 AM

I will be in Moscow from 12-16th of December attending concert in Kremlin.(14th in the evening)
I already have list of things to see in town while I am there.
I arrive on the 12th mid afternoon and departing the city at noon on Friday, so I only have 3 full days and afternoon on the 12th.
I was wondering how feasible is to have day trip ( or even half day) out of the city and what you suggest is best choice for this trip?
I know you can spend month in Moscow and not see everything, but I thought something different for fleeting visit.
I love history and anything is OK, very much love soviet times and something to take me back to my growing up in Socialist society will be great.
I am also very big fan of Russian Classics and visit to something connected to Tolstoy, Pushkin, Esenin or Gorki is also something I would love to experiance.
      Any suggestions?
      Thank you in advance.

    • From St Petersberg to Vladivostok?

      Russia Nov 24, 2016 at 10:33 PM

      Hi
I want to travel diagonally across Russia using public transport. I'm planning to start in St Petersberg and traveling across the northern regions of Siberia then across to Vladivostok . I know it's a long way and will take some time.

I was wondering if any Russians out there could tell me if it is possible to travel like this across some of the more isolated regions along the northern end of Siberia and the eastern parts of Russia? For example, is it too mountainous, is it too cold, is the frequency of transport allot less in that part of the world?

I've travelled across countries like Mongolia, Kazakastan and other Central Asian countries so I'm somewhat familiar with some of the modes of transport. I'm just not sure what to expect in the regions I want to travel.

I'm hoping to go in Russia's summer months.

Any tips at all would be helpful as it will provide a great starting point for further research into this trip I will be doing in the next few years.
      Thanks so much.

Murmansk to Saint Petersburg May 2014

      Murmansk Aug 27, 2013 at 6:06 PM

I am hoping to find suitable tours for Northern Russia.

I arrive in Kirkenes Norway on 5th May 2014 and wish to be in Saint Petersburg by 16th May 2014. I understand that I will need to travel from Kirkenes to Murmansk by bus.

I am seeking any information regarding tours in the region of Russia from Murmansk to Saint Petersburg preferably by train
I am seeking assistance with not only stopovers and sites to see, but also the support of English-speaking guides in the recommended locations, purchase of tickets and (budget) accommodation. I will be travelling alone.
I welcome any suggestions you might make.
      Regards
      Mark

    • What tour to take while in Murmansk for 1 day?

      Murmansk Apr 6, 2011 at 6:57 AM

We arrive on Sunday, June 19th.
Since we will only have a group Visa, we must take one of the 5 ship tours, or sign up for an individual guided tour which will be very expensive I'm afraid. (They are not posted yet.)
My husband is interested in the nuclear ice-breaker and ship museum.
But I'm afraid we will not see much else.
If we take that tour, will we get to at least drive through the city, or is the museum and ice-breaker near where the cruise ship docks?
I'd like to do a little shopping too - would anything be open on Sunday?
      Thoughts please!

Is the train to Murmansk still operating? Will it be operating mid June 2010. Are we likely to see any snow still on the ground here in mid June?

    • Day Trip in Murmansk -Arriving by Cruise Ship

      Murmansk Apr 21, 2009 at 7:11 AM

      Hi,
Will be stopping in Murmansk this summer on a cruise ship, and want to see a little of the city. Since I work on the ship, I am not certain I will get a tour so I need to plan an independent one. Can anyone tell me how easy difficult it will be to get around from the ship terminal; I realize I will have to get a visa but I am wondering if there are local (English speaking) tour operators who can provide a day tour with a blanket visa and what I might be able to see either with them or on my own.
      Many thanks.

      To and from

      Murmansk Jan 13, 2008 at 12:03 PM

Hi. Me and a friend are planning on taking the Trans-siberian express ending in Moscow this winter. From there we hope to go to Murmansk. From there to Finland before flying home. Does anybody know the best/easiest way to get to Murmansk from Moscow and the best/easiest from Murmansk to Finland. Both journeys will be in December.

Also if anyone has any ideas how to get from northern Finland to the U.K. cheaply and easily this will be VERY helpful!

      Thanks for your help!

      Planning road trip, part III

Murmanskaya Oblast' Mar 12, 2004 at 4:28 AM

Actually the same questions...: How is the road from Kem to Murmansk? Are there some places I should not miss on the way? Is it easy to camp in this region (actually sleeping in a small lorry)? Maybe a stupid question, but are there any camp sites? Is it allowed to camp in the countryside? Any danger concerning bears? Mosquitoes? Thanks! François

Hi, Any info. on Murmansk as a place to visit for 4/5 days in the month of either May or June? I`m thinking of visiting there next year and would like to know if its worth the stop.I can only select a maximum of 6 cities on my Visa, so i want to check out each one before hand. Is Murmansk safe for lone backpackers? Would it be too cold to do outdoor exploring in late April/Early May? Any info.or strange tales appreciated. Thanks.
