    • How tourist-y is Antibes in January or February?

      Antibes Nov 7, 2016 at 12:32 AM

How tourist-y is Antibes in January or February?

I need a get-away soon, but I don't want to be around large numbers of tourists milling around, taking photos, partying. Unlike many tourists these days, I'm not "looking for the action" (excitement) at all.

I do speak French fluently and have been a francophile most of my life.

Is Antibes in the winter subdued enough, quiet enough for me to spend two weeks just de-compressing, wandering around, reading (French novels) and listening to classical music in my apartment? Or should I look elsewhere on the Cote d'Azur, somewhere smaller like Vence or Beaulieu, etc.??

    • Menton or Villefranche-sur-mer ?

      Menton Nov 5, 2016 at 11:46 PM

How would you compare Menton with Villefranche-sur-mer as a base to explore the Cote d'Azur for a first-time traveler (to the French Riviera) for two-weeks? I am looking for a quiet village or small town atmosphere, away from hordes of tourists, and crossed off Antibes, etc. for that reason. Somehow I narrowed down to my list to Menton and Villefranche-sur-mer. I know the latter is much smaller and seems to cater to a more upper-tier clientele, while the former has attracted many French retirees.

I do speak French and have a degree in art history, with interest in French history and literature. I will not have a car.

    • Solo woman traveling in Paris on New Years Eve

      Paris Nov 28, 2016 at 10:57 AM

I am a 54 year old woman who will be arriving in Paris Orly airport on Thursday, December 29 at 5 pm,
and flying out of DeGalle airport on Sunday, January 1 at 11 am.

      My questions...

      1. What area in Paris should I stay in?
Since I really only have two days I would like a great location to walk to things in the area and as a base for sightseeing. I would be so grateful for decent, hotel and restaurant suggestions in that area?

      2. What is the best/easiest way to get from Orly to "that area" at that time of day?

      3. Are there any good one day tours?
I would probably book that for Friday or Saturday, and spend the other day on my own exploring the area around my hotel.

      4. What is there to do on New Years Eve? I don't drink but would love to know what would be safe for me to do alone that night.

      Thank you very much!

Can anyone suggest a day-trip from Paris?

      Paris Nov 11, 2016 at 7:32 AM

I will be visiting Paris in a few weeks. I have been to Paris numerous times and know it very well. Equally, I have taken many day-trips from Paris and have been to all the obvious places (and even beyond). Can anyone suggest a new place I might visit? I am looking for a place within a two hour radius by train.

I like quaint places, and/or places that has a old worldly feel to them. I enjoy visiting places with a riverside setting as well e.g. Moret-sur-Loing.

Here is a short list of day-trips I have taken:

Amiens, Auxerre, Beauvais, Bourges, Châlons-en-Champagne, Chantilly, Chartres, Compiègne, Dijon, Fontainebleau, Giverny, Moret-sur-Loing, Orléans, Provins, Reims, Rouen, Senlis, Sens, Tours, Troyes, Versailles.

I have not listed other places I have visisted that are further a way e.g. Caen, Lyon, Metz, Nancy, Nantes, Rennes etc.

At the moment I am thinking of visiting Meaux (because there is a cathedral in Meaux), but I would like to have a few other places on my list. I thought of trying to get to Avallon and/or Loches, but it appears there aren't any direct (or very few direct) trains to Avallon or Loches.

      Many thanks

    • Parking in Nancy

      Nancy Jan 22, 2015 at 11:14 AM

      Hi,

I have two bookings in Nancy and am trying to decide which one to keep. One is in the center of the city (rue Pierre Semard) and the other is on the outskirts (Laxou). I'd much prefer the one in the city, but it doesn't have parking (hotel says "Public parking is available at a nearby location and charges are applicable." Can anyone tell me how far away such parking lots are and how much they charge? We would only need it for one overnight.

      Thanks very much.

Transport from Mezt town center to Parc des expositions de Metz

      Metz Dec 2, 2014 at 4:29 AM

      Hello all,

Im planning to attend a function at Parc des expositions de Metz or Mezt Expo in November 2015. I did some readings from posting and blogs in planning this trip (my first trip to Europe, anyway). But there are few things that i would like to confirm to...

      1) is there any bus or shuttle bus that going up to the Metz expo from the town center? and the cost too..

      2) which area is the best place to stay in Mezt for low budget/backpackers traveller? i've looked at Auberge de la Jeunesse de Metz.. but im afraid it would be pretty far from the public transport... for a non-french speaking tourist like me

your kind replies are highly appreciated. thank u. :)

      Gravelotte Jan 27, 2014 at 8:45 AM

Are there any driving tour maps available for the Gravelotte battle area? My great grandfather from Mecklenburg was in the 5th Company (Magdeburg fusiliers), 84th Regiment, 9th Army Corps, of the Second German Army and left an interesting account of the battle. I would like to try to find some of the places where he probably was. I understand that the local tourism office has no guide service or list of guides?

I am thinking of renting an automobile and driving around the area in April this year.

      Thanks,

      Hi,

I'm researching a future trip and plan to spend a day exploring Metz before leaving in late afternoon. I seem to have found a website that says the (central) train station no longer has lockers. Is there anywhere to store luggage nearby, or might one of the hotels allow me to leave my suitcase there for a few hours?

      Thanks very much.

    • Landrefang (or Laudrefang?)

      Metz Apr 5, 2013 at 11:06 AM

Research for my great-grandfather lead me to a site where a handwritten note said he was born in Landrefang. I googled this term and can't find anything but a street named that in St Avold, plus a mention of this town in a US Military record from World War I. I do see a Laudrefang near St. Avold, though, on my large-scale map of France

Does anyone know if Landrefang and Laudrefang are the same place, or if not, where Landrefang might be?

Thank you very much for any help you can give.

      Verdun-sur-Meuse Sep 26, 2010 at 7:47 PM

I am visiting the Verdun area in Nov 2010. I want to get to a small village called Chatel Chehery, about 30 miles to the northwest of Verdun. Besides renting a car, are there any other options? Is taxi feasible? Any local buses?
Is hitchhiking from Verdun safe? (I can only drive an automatic transmission, so stick shift is out. I know renting a car would be the best, but I've never driven outside the U.S., so I am not particularly eager to try, except if there is no other good option) Is there anyone who lives in Verdun or Sainte Menehould who would be willing to give me a lift (I'd be happy to pay, of course)? Merci.
