      Stasi Museum and cameras

      Berlin Sep 25, 2016 at 9:18 AM

Just a follow up to my Stasi question a few weeks ago. I assume that one is allowed to take a camera in, as I've seen so many (obviously not iPhone) photo's from there. Will I be allowed a camera bag? Or will I have to leave that at the entrance?

      Tempelhof Airfield access

      Berlin Sep 13, 2016 at 11:28 PM

Can anyone tell mr what the access is to the outside of the airfield? I'm too late to book a guided tour, but would like to photograph the hanger and other places within the grounds. I know the green areas have access, but i'm not sure of the area nearer the hanger. Thanks.

      Welcome card

      Berlin Sep 2, 2016 at 11:07 AM

After my family meeting I'll have three days alone to visit museums, and return to Schoenefeld on the fourth day. Is it worth while to buy the Berlin Welcome card? I see museums thoroughly, not three-four a day. I see on their website that I can buy a three day card.

      Meeting at Schoenefeld airport

      Berlin Sep 1, 2016 at 7:08 AM

I'll arive at the airport at 10 AM from Israel, my sister and inlaw will arrive later from Gatwick. We're staying at the same hotel (family meeting), and she has already reserved a taxi to the hotel . I want to meet her at the airport to go with them, are there different places to get the luggage and several exits? Or only a single exit?

I'll want to get out of the passport control and the luggage, and I can't wait there because I have to eat breakfast. Low-cost flight, leaving home at 3 AM.

If I book a flight to leave at 7.30, can I actually get there? I'm staying near Frankfurter Alle S+U Bahn.

From Schoenefeld without taxi alone all the way

      Berlin Aug 30, 2016 at 2:21 AM

I'll arrive at the Schoenefeld airport, in the middle of the day, and stay at the Novum Winters hotel Gendarmenmarkt. Is the best way to take the airport bus to the Alexanderplatz and from there a taxi to the hotel? I guess there are taxis around the end station of the bus ?

This time I'm without my husband to carry the suitcase (not big).

      Stasi Museum guided tours

      Berlin Aug 28, 2016 at 1:10 AM

I'll be in Berlin next Spring and am planning a visit to the Stasi Museum. I'm not one for guided tours - prefer to go round quietly on my own, but will a guide take me to area's that would be restricted to unguided visitors?

      Berlin Welcome Card

      Berlin Aug 18, 2016 at 1:39 AM

Do I get this card in Berlin, or do I have to order it from home before my trip?
On my 2,5 free days in September I want to visit several museums etc., but I don't know yet which ones. Because I don't know what I'll see with my group, and how the weather will be for walking.

I won't take the card which includes the Schoenefeld airport, because I don't want to carry my suitcase to the bus, I prefer a taxi. Or is there the option of taking the airport trolley to the bus station? Then I could take the taxi only inside the city.

German style restaurant in general area of Ostbahnhof

      Berlin Aug 13, 2016 at 4:12 PM

A group of six friends from different parts of the world will be meeting in Berlin next month.

We are staying in the general area of Ostbahnhof station. (My partner and I are staying at the InterCity).

What we are looking for is a German style restaurant where we can book a table for six people on a Saturday night. Doesn't have to be "fine dining" but a happy place for friends to meet over good food - and a few beers!

We can travel by public transport if necessary.

      Suggestions would be most welcome.

      Museum Opening Times

      Berlin Aug 10, 2016 at 8:16 AM

I'll have 2-3 free days in Berlin, beginning of September 2016. From Saturday till Monday evening. I'm looking for a list of museums including opening times including weekdays. It's OK in German, I read freely.

On my last visit ten years ago I wasted a lot of time getting to Museums that had opening times on the internet, but they were closed on the day I came, or closed for restorations.

      Public toilets

      Berlin Aug 8, 2016 at 3:12 PM

How common are public toilets in Berlin? I am a 60 something male and often find myself needing to use a toilet when out and about. Haven't been to Berlin since 1974 so would appreciate any tips. I understand places like U Bahn and S Bahn stations don't have toilets.

      Exchanging Money?

      Berlin Aug 3, 2016 at 9:29 PM

Having read up on travel in Germany in general and Berlin in particular, there are several travel web sites that mention that credit and debit cards are not accepted as readily as they are in the USA and Canada.

One of the hotels I am considering is well placed and available at a good price, but it is cash only upon arrival or pay by money order, as mentioned on these travel web pages.

If I decide to go with this option, would I be best off getting Euros to pay for it at an ATM? Usually currency exchanges are a rip-off, but of course ATM fees can fall into that category as well, so I would like to know what the best options might be.

      Thanks in advance,

    • Food/carousel/sing-along in Berlin?

      Berlin Jul 28, 2016 at 2:59 PM

Could you please give me some recommendations for
a)a good streetfood (some kimchi, pulled pork burgers, burrito, bratwurst etc)? I'm just looking for something interesting to grab for lunch/late dinner and I am wondering what you usually treat yourself with.
      b) are there any sing along piano bars (like NYC)? Or something fun Germans would do in the evening.
      c) does Berlin we happen to have carousel rides for adults? I kind of miss those.

Cafe or restaurant playing traditional German music

      Berlin Jul 21, 2016 at 7:17 PM

I will be spending several days in Berlin during September. I wonder if there are any bars or cafes that would play "Oktoberfest" style music. I appreciate Berlin is not Munich but wondered what opportunities might exist to experience such music - and enjoy a beer at the same time.

I am staying at the InterCity Hotel near Ostbahnhof station and am comfortable using public transport.

My travelling companion and I are in our 60s but consider ourselves young at heart.

Thank you from Paul in Australia

      Berlin Jun 4, 2016 at 9:54 AM

Hello everyone! I'm french, 18 and me and some friends aged from 18 to 19 are going to Berlin in august for 10 days. We already have a lot of places to visit but I wanted to know if you know some uncommon places, or unknown by the tourist, that would be cool to visit. I mean something particular, not very spoken about in all those tourism books but that worth the visit. It can be anything: a place, a restaurant, a shop, a bar, a nightclub...

Thank you for your help and have a nice day !

      Berlin and Potsdam, Late September

      Berlin May 21, 2016 at 10:28 PM

It looks like I will wind up going to a trade show in Berlin in late September. i've been doing a bit of research, and am wondering:

      1. How much German do I need to learn before I try to get around. I am particularly concerned with getting food in restaurants, as many other tourist and traveler aimed facilities seem to do reasonably well at having multiple languages available.

      2. I know of the Grunewald and the 66 Lakes (yes, I know its 72) Trail, but I am wondering about other walking that would be good?

Like any big city, the Berlin Travel Guide has a lot of stuff to sort through. What I wind up doing is going to depend on how much spare time I wind up with, but any help sorting through all that would be a help. Other than the large forest parks and similar nearby, good day trips to interesting smaller communities nearby would be good to know about. Also, I know of the Transport Museum, but are there any good tourist railraods that would be operating that time of year that would be a reasonable day trip away?

Oh, and if there are any VT members that would like to have a meetup, maybe we can plan something.

Tours (Segway, Walking whatever) vs on your own

      Berlin May 17, 2016 at 9:39 PM

I will be in Berlin for 1.5 days precisely. AM trying to figure out if one should take these guided tours (free / paid) which do not give much time to enter a museum / go around Brandenburg / Reichstag Dome etc OR be on one's own and go to places and spend time probably reading up from the guidebooks.

Also, not sure which option works out better. Buy BerlinWelcome Card (which will give full transport access but no HopOnHopOff tours) and go to each interesting place on our own by public transport (even Route 100 / 200 or trains/trams). Or, buy HopOnHopOff and take a complete tour once and then on the next day stop at places we like.

Any thoughts from people who have been to Berlin for a short stay like this OR locals who are not tied to these tour companies?

      Thanks for your help

      Berlin Apr 5, 2016 at 6:27 AM

Hello, we are coming to Berlin on Sunday 1st May for 3 nights, staying at the Grand Hyatt near Marlene-Dietrich-Platz 2. Its our 5th wedding anniversary and first weekend away from our 4 children - wahoo!

Can anyone recommend a good bar nearby for some drinks? We are 40 somethings but like somewhere a bit lively. Or is there a good restaurant anyone can recommend nearby - The hotel restaurant looks a tad pricey for us!

Many thanks for you help, Ali & Amber.

      Sports in Berlin!

      Berlin Feb 9, 2016 at 10:33 AM

      Hi there!

Is there any sports in, or in the outskirts of Berlin between the 24th and 28th April? I know you have a couple of more famous teams in different sports like Union- and Hertha Berlin in football, Eisbären in icehockey and Füchse Berlin in handball. Do any of these, of any other team in 'a bigger sport' play by these dates? (Include potential games like if a team seems to play any sort of playoff-match, which not is determined yet, around this time, the 24-28th April)

      Greatful for answers! Danke!
