    • Killarney day tour Gap of Dunloe

      Ireland Jul 28, 2016 at 6:12 PM

Need some help please in planning a day sightseeing Gap of Dunloe area. Is it better to take this tour with guide or can it be done independently. I have been to Killarney a few times and am familiar with National Park and have some sightseeing tours.
I read that there is a shuttle bus from tourist office and bus station that drops off tourists who are hiking the trails. I enjoy trails but not sure if I should join a tour or do the hiking and afterwards pick up the shuttle to get back to town or National Park. I will be in Killarney on August 17-18. Thanks for any suggestions.

    • Traveling with tour to Copenhagen, Norway, Sweden returning to Dublin/JFK

      Ireland Aug 8, 2016 at 12:40 PM

Arriving into Ireland end of next week August and need advice on best method to purchase foreign currencies for my tour. I contacted Irish Bank today which was a waste of time. They could not place my order which I would pay for with Debit in Euros and pick up on arrival. Said I would need to visit the branch and complete order forms. Then advised the bank only handles money to use in Sweden. This did not help either as Stockholm will be the last stopover before leaving on return flight to Dublin and on to JFK.

Will travel on A/F flight to Copenhagen to join tour. I need to have some money to use in Denmark on arrival in case I take a taxi or train getting to hotel. I am arriving on a Saturday and need advice please on best way to get the currencies.

I know there are foreign exchange kiosks at most airports but not sure if one can purchase currency using Euros debit card. Some meals are included and paid for on tour. I need to have some money on arrival in Copenhagen. Is it easy to get money at airports?
Will visit Killarney for 3 nights mid week on arrival, then Donegal Town for 2 and one night near Dublin before I begin the tour. Know that the banks in Ireland are closed on Saturday so greatlyl appreciate help with this matter please. Thank you.

    • Any suggestions for an hour or 2 while in Killarney area?

by Tldgo Online Now Apr 7, 2016 at 10:39 AM

We are arriving by train into Farranfore mid April around 5 pm to rent a car and drive to Killarney to pick up another couple that will arrive in Killarney by train around 7 pm. I'm not sure we will make it to the park before it closes but I would like to do something to explore this area! If we make it to the park before closing, is an hour enough time to take a short hike in the Killarney National Park? Any suggestions? The only short walk I found so far was the Torc waterfall.
Would we be better off just strolling the streets of Killarney?
      Thanks!

Means of transport - Dublin to Killarney

by anaturm Online Now Jan 1, 2012 at 2:06 PM

Im flying from Edinburgh to Dublin tomorrow and, instead of staying in the big city first and travelling the countryside later on, Ive decided to do it the other way around this time, so my plan is to go from the Dublin airport to Killarney. I imagine the best way to get there would be by train, right? But in the Dublin airport website it said that there is no railway connection there, so I should take a bus to one of the train stations. Which one should I go to? My flight arrives at about 21hrs, can I still get a train that night to Killarney or would it be easier to just book a night at a hostel in Dublin and travel on the following morning?

I would also like to then go on to Doolin, to see the Cliffs of Mohre. Can I get there by train directly from Killarney or would it be better to be "stationed" in Galway (which Im planning to visit anyway) and make daily trips out?

Thank you very very much in advance for any answers! The VT forum has already been a HUGE help planning my travel so far and as soon as Im somewhere more stable, Ill start writing reviews and "giving back"! Thanks again :)

      Christmas in Killarney

by dobrovod Online Now Dec 7, 2011 at 12:39 PM

It may sound cliché, but having some Irish ancestry and hearing this song as a kid made it sound wonderful. Now, I have the opportunity to do so with my family. I am wondering if much is open over the long Christmas weekend or if we would be sufficiently satisfied with the amenities at a nice hotel, local walks and Christmas mass.

Please let me know if 3-4 days worthwhile over Christmas. Due to flight times and days that I can take off, we may do a couple of days in Dublin as well with a rental car and stop by Blarney Castle.

We are planning a trip to Ireland in search of our ancestors. My Great Grandfather Robert Welch (several different versions of spelling have been found)was born in Killarney, Kerry, Ireland about 1840. The IGI file states that he and his parents Janes and Ellen were Roman Catholic. I am looking for further information on them. Does this church have the records if not could you advise as to where we should start. We plan to stay in Ireland about a week, so our time will be short. He married a girl by the name of Margaret O'Connor who was born in Bally-Na-Lackin, Limerick, Ireland and will want to go to that area too. We have a little more information on her than we do in Robert and his family.

Any assistance you can offer will be so greatly appreciated. Thanking you in advance.

      Hi,

I'm looking for a swimming pool/jacuzzi open to the public in Killarney. I do know several of the spa complexes have special facilities with herbal saunas and fancy showers, but these cost 25 euros to use, and we don't particularly like saunas. Paying 25 euros/$40/£20 just to use the pool and jacuzzi is way too steep. Any suggestions for a less expensive option? Many thanks.
