Hi all, I just had some questions about living in Kaohsiung:
1) Where is the best district to live in if you want to be near a lot of activities (indoor and outdoor, but still need it to be affordable?
2) Are there any recommendations for schools in the area?
3) What are some fun places to hang out at night? Any ex-pat bars that tickle your fancy?
4) What the deal with visas? I've heard that it's better to arrive in Taiwan and then find a job (better pay/location/etc.), but as I want to get there in November, I'm worried there won't be anyone hiring. If I did just fly to Taiwan, is there any way to get a visa where I don't need to leave the country in order to come back in with a working visa?
Thanks for all the help ahead of time! Much gratitude!
We are an active senior couple arriving in Kaohsiung on March 5, 2015 for just one day (cruise ship). Wondering if any locals would be willing to meet us and tour us around your city in your car, including Fokuangshan Monastary and other places you recommend, plus things 'off the beaten track.' We are experienced travelers who live in USA and Chiang Mai, Thailand. We've done this sort of thing before on VT and always worked great for all! Open to all ideas! (;>). Thanks, Bob & Fran

My brod and I will be traveling to Taiwan for a 16-day holiday starting September 25 - October 11, 2009. Our IT includes Taipei, Hualien (Taroko), Kaohsiung, and Taichung (Sun Moon Lake)
Recently, we saw from the news that Taiwan has been badly affected by the typhoon and reports said it will take several years to "repair" such damages..
My concern is:
1. Are the roads leading to Kaohsiung County passable by TRAIN or BUS, despite the recent calamity?
2. Is it still safe to travel these roads to Kaohsiung?
3. Pls advise other options.
Many thanks for your replies
