Firstly thanks for all the helpful info. Major change of plans decided to fly from Auckland to Christchurch rather than take the ferry

Is it possible in a day to drive from Christchurch via Arthurs Pass to Greymouth - a friend who is married to a Kiwi laughed at the idea yet Google maps makes it 151 miles which would make it doable even on mountain roads given that we started early. Likewise I've been warned that the roads around Fox & Franz Joseph Glaciers are liable to close if there is heavy rain. In blunt terms is this scaremongering - equally a hol is for relaxing so we don't want stress

All info much appreciated and I'm sorry for bothering VTs but I know the advice given is always top notch

      Many thanks

      Dart Valley advice

by JohanIsWeg Online Now Nov 11, 2008 at 11:00 PM

Can anyone help with a really nice and scenic walk/tramp near the Dart River into the Dart Valley - in the Paradise vicinity of Glenorchy?

There's a lovely river entry called The Chasm upriver from the Arcadia Homestead, which I'd love to see! Is there an inexpensive way of visiting this location, either on foot or kayak?

How far could you go in a non-4WD vehicle towards Paradise? Could you go past Diamond Lake as far as Arcadia Homestead or even further?

Any help would be highly appreciated. Thanks!
