I'm traveling to Cancun in early January and staying the first few days at an studio I rented out on AirBnb. I plan to book a all-inclusive hotel at some point during my trip for about 3 day stay. Is it possible to book a decent all-inclusive hotel on the spot? If so, any recommendation on a hotel for a single male in his 20's?

      Weekend Getaway in PV

Puerto Vallarta Nov 7, 2016 at 11:50 AM

Hi VTers! My husband and I are going on a quick weekend trip to PV this weekend. I'm usually so ahead in my planning, but haven't had time to do a single thing yet. I had a few questions I was hoping you might be able to help with.

      1. What is the best way to get from the airport to the hotel? I have contacted the hotel to see if they can arrange transportation and am waiting to hear back from them. Is taking a taxi safe? I saw this tip from 2012 and was wondering if it was still valid. Taxi FROM the Airport: Taxis Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Tip - VirtualTourist Was also wondering if we should just go ahead and hire our own car.

      2. Is there a good place to exchange money? Or should we do it in the states before we leave?

      3. If there was 1 activity you could recommend we don't miss, what would it be?

      4. If there was 1 restaurant you recommend we don's miss, what would it be?

Again, our trip is short, we arrive on Friday afternoon and leave Monday afternoon so we will probably just be relaxing most of the time. We haven't had a real vacation without our child in 5 years!

We like the beach, we like to snorkel, we like to learn about the local culture, listen to live music, and love to eat Mexican food! Thank you for any suggestions!

      Cancun airport departure tax

      Mexico Nov 21, 2016 at 1:18 PM

Hi, we are travelling to Mexico on 10Dec2016 with British Airways and have read conflicting reviews on whether or not we will need to pay a local departure tax of around 900 pesos. Some reviews have said it will be included on our ticket whereas others have said we have to pay it when leaving Mexico. Does anyone know the truth about this? Even the official Cancun website doesn't mention it! If we do have to pay it locally do they definitely accept sterling?

Puerto Palomas Apr 21, 2011 at 3:29 AM

Never crossed here before. Are there drugstores and how far away from the border are they - can you just walk across to them? Are the prices comparable to Algadones (out of Yuma, AZ)? My biggest concern is safety: How safe really are Americans to go and shop here? I heard someone here in our RVPark mention a fun "pink Building" - is it within walking distance from the border also? I am handicapped and walk with canes. Thank you for any help you can give; with the rising cost of fuel I do not want to drive clear to Yuma to get my meds...but then I do not want to take my new truck across into Mexico either and get accosted over it........

My mom is 83 yrs old and is considering the 17 hr train trip from the port where her cruise ship is docking. I understand that the tourist train is "upscale". I'm wondering how smooth the tracks are and if an old lady could walk easily on the train. Also, once at the copper canyon, is there anything besides the hiking that would entertain her while my more fit father is hiking? I know that she would love the scenery (the pictures are beautiful)but I don't want her to get hurt on this trip.

I realise Omnibus de Mexico do this trip, but the timetable for March is not on the website. Also for other months there are many options, does anyone know the easiest and most direct timings? If we have to stay a night in Chihuahua any suggestions of clean safe and not too expensive hotels.

    • Flying to Chihuahua, getting Chepe to Divisadero and back to Creel

Estado de Chihuahua Jan 5, 2008 at 10:36 AM

      Hi everyone

Just wondering if you have any tips on the following proposed journey

Day 1 - Fly from Merida to Mexico City then on to Chihuahua (seems you have to go via Mexico City to get to Chihuahua). We'd arrive around 10pm and would need to be at the train station at either 6am (1st class) or 7am (2nd class) the next morning to get the Chepe.

Does anyone know what hotel would be our best bet given such a late arrival and early start? I've searched in vain on the net for a map of Chihuahua city to get an idea of how far the airport, city hotels and train station are apart.

We then get the Chepe the next day, stop off in Divisadero for a while to look around (time is limited) then get train back to Creel that afternoon.

Third day to be spent in Creel, maybe get a guided trip around the area. Then we fly back to Mexico City on the fourth day.

We're not sure how practical some of this is but particularly the late arrival in Chihuahua and early start the following morning, and don't want to find ourselves lost late at night not knowing the area.

      Thanks!

      Juárez Feb 12, 2006 at 1:10 PM

I'll be in Juarez for a few days in early March for a little vacation and to do some research for school. I've heard that the area around Ave. 16 de Septiembre east of the Palacio Municpial is one of the nicer parts of the city. I'm looking for an area that is kind of trendy, with sidewalk cafes, restuarants, and maybe a few drinking holes.

Any suggestions at all? Thank you,
