    • What is ideal location for hotel. Do I need to book.

      Isle of Wight Yesterday

We will be arriving on 1st July. We are only staying 2 nights with a car. Looking at the map would it be better to stay at Newport or Shanklin. We basically want to drive around the island and look at sights and shops etc.

Bing July should we book first or drive onto island and hopefully find accommodation that we would like. We are both in our sixties.

      Specialist advice re coach holidays

United Kingdom Jan 9, 2017 at 2:58 PM

We have a long established local company that organises local day trips, theatre trips as well as short and longer holiday breaks in the UK and Europe..
We have, so far, only used them to take us to and from events in the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff.
They have an excellent reputation amongst local people who have used then for longer holidays in the UK and overseas.
. We are considering a coach and Eurotunnel trip to the Austrian Tyrol. 8 days in all.
Can you please advise me if we should see any particular details of affiliation to any travel authorising associations ABTA - that sort of thing.
      They are www.europeanheritagetours.com
We usually travel independently with full Travel Insurance but now octogenarians like the idea of sitting back and enjoying the view with somebody else at the wheel
I would be very grateful for any advice you can give.
      Thanks

    • how much money do you need to be granted a visa to visit the UK for 1 or 2 weeks?

      England Dec 25, 2016 at 12:22 PM

In order to have the visa application approved, you need to show that you have a certain amount of money, the means to look after yourself for the duration of your stay and to get back to your home country on your own. You need to show that you have a reason to return home.. The person who will visit me from morocco is a student who wants to visit the UK for 1 or 2 weeks, they can also stay with me in my house so there is no need to pay for a hotel or anything like that, even food I would provide everything. But we dont know how much money they must show is in the bank account for the visa to be accepted or denied. There seems to be no guideline about any kind of threshold. Does anyone know more about how much money is needed for the visa application to be accepted?

I am from the USA and traveling internationally for the first time to Newcastle. I have a layover at Heathrow during the travel. I know in the USA you have to go through immigration and customs at the first port of entry into the country. Do I have to go through immigration and customs before I catch my flight to newcastle? I am traveling with American Airlines for the whole trip.

    • VISA Question

      London Jan 1, 2017 at 5:01 PM

Hello, guys. Here I have some dilemma. Due to UK's Immigration procedure, citizens of Ukraine need to obtain VISA to step on Her Majesty's soil. But, there are also some rumors that once you have NATIONAL LONG-TERM VISA (in my case, I'm currently holding National Long-term student VISA of Spain) from any EU/Schengen Agreement country, you could travel to GB without another. Please, reply me as soon as you can, because I've tried several times to figure it out both in UK's Government website and Spanish. None of them replied. Thank you in advance.

18 days. England, Scotland or Ireland?

      United Kingdom 23 hours ago

Hi. I'm planning to travel by myself on my 26th birthday in May. I want to spend approx 18 days to visit UK. I am not into big cities and more interested with beautiful relaxing scenery (castles, mountains, lakes). I am planning to fly into London and spend maybe 2-3 days just to see the big ben and other touristy area then off to somewhere relaxing. Do you think I can visit both Scotland and Ireland in this timeframe? If not, which of the two would you recommend in terms of beautiful scenery? Also, would it be better if I hire a car and drive or take public transportation? Thanks in advance! :)

    • Traveling with baby for 1 month in Scotland. Help please!

      Scotland Dec 31, 2016 at 10:14 AM

      Hi there,

My husband and I are planning a trip to Scotland in the month of June. As we will be traveling with our baby daughter, we're hoping to find an area to base ourselves for the month (or split our time between two home bases; a couple of weeks in each place). We will be renting a car from Glasgow and returning to Glasgow at the end of the month. We would like to see the Highlands (possibly the Isle of Skye) and castles. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

      Northumberland or Kent?

United Kingdom Dec 27, 2016 at 10:48 AM

We're taking an 8 day trip to England and I have one free day to choose between two options. We'll either be doing a tour at the beginning of the trip, from Edinburgh to Alnswick Castle, the Holy Island, and the Northumberland coast - OR we can do a one day tour from London to Kent, Leeds, and Dover. I'd been interested in Northumberland and the Holy Island as I have a Scandinavian heritage and also have traced lines back to the Northumberland area, and have also heard about the beautiful, remote landscape. However, this tour will be a lot of time spent scenic driving. The other tour will be rushed, but allow me to see Kent, Leeds Castle, with a stop at the cliffs of Dover. Which would you suggest?

    • Planning a trip to New Quay

New Quay Jun 14, 2011 at 11:49 AM

We are planning to visit New Quay next year. My mother was born there and I want to spend some time getting to know the place and walking the Ceredigion Coastal Path. Thought we would also spend a day in Aberystwyth. We will be traveling by train/bus. Is there anything I should especially see that is near enough and I'm able to get to by walking or public transport? Any advice? When I ask friends if they have been to Wales - it seems that Holyhead is about the only place they have been. Travel books are frustrating since they seem to skip that part of the coast in their descriptions. Do you think 3-4 days is enough time? Thanks for the feedback.

Hertz Car drop off to Ferry Terminal

      Fishguard Aug 22, 2008 at 10:16 PM

Mum and I leave on our first European/UK trip in a few weeks and we are getting pretty excited. Would anyone be able to tell me the distance and best way to get from the Hertz Rental Car drop off in downtown Fishguard to the ferry terminal. We will have all our luggage. Is a taxi the cheapest/easiest option? Likewise at the other end in Ireland if you know from the terminal to the Hertz depot? Thanks.

      Bachelorette Party in the area?!

      Dyfed Jul 20, 2007 at 9:12 AM

      Hello,

My daughter is getting married in early August in a town called Llanddowror, the home town of her fiance. She thinks it's going to be only her father and I going. We are from the US and have never been to Wales.

She has no idea yet, but I have arranged for 4 of her best friends to surprise her and meet us there!!

The problem? We want to have a fun bachelorette party, but I have NO idea what to plan or where we might go for some action. We would like to be in a bar or club with lots of people.

Is Swansea the best place? How far away is it from Llanddowror?

The other problem? It's going to have to take place on the first MONDAY night in August! Not the best night of the week for a party - but it has to be that way.

Can anyone give me some ideas of where to go? Thanks so much!

    • Recommendation for Riding?

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Jul 5, 2004 at 1:03 PM

Greetings: My family and I (2 adults, 16 and 12 year old) will be spending a week near the village of Dale in late July. My 16-year old daughter loves to ride (she owns a horse and rides at least 5-6 times a week). My husband is also an experienced rider and the two of them are hoping to go on several half day rides. Neither care for stuffy, show-type riding. Although I've been told that one can find riding centers through the local ads when we get to the Pembrokeshire area, does anyone have recommendations on which riding center is best? My husband and daughter would like to find a place that has healthy and lively horses, interesting trails to ride, and friendly people. Thanks in advance for any suggestions you have.

      Tenby, where it should be

      Tenby Nov 1, 2003 at 10:51 PM

I just built my page on Tenby, a small town by tthe west of Wales, but I found that on the VT destination map, it only appears under UK, and not Wales. Even a smaller place like the adjacent Pembroke town was properly listed under a suitable Welsh district. Anybody can tell me how I could get to the VT staff on my question (or perhaps VT staff has just known about it now)?
