We are going to Cuzco in mid July and want to hike in to Machu Picchu. I understand that you must have a guide but everything I see online is very expensive, multi-day excursion type deals. Is it possible to hire a guide just for the trek without having to schedule all the peripheral trips, hotels, meals, etc?

G'Day, I did the trek about 2 months ago, you do need a guide and a 4 day trek will cost about170-$200 (if booked in Cuzco) maybe more in July. This will get you a bus to the trail head, guide and porters for the 4 days (3 nights) all food, entracne to MP and train ticket back to Cuzco. You will need a few days in Cuzco waiting for a spot unless you pay more and book ahead. It's always the same time or money not both. Have fun
