    • Mountjoy Street - Dublin

      Dublin Nov 14, 2016 at 6:35 AM

I will be visiting Dublin starting tomorrow. My hostel is located on Mountjoy street, and recently I've read mixed review about the location. Generally this doesn't affect me, since I'm mostly a daytime traveler and tend to avoid unsafe areas/crowds. However, tomorrow I would be arriving around 9pm. My initial plan was to walk on foot from O'Connel Bridge, but in the light of the reviews I've read, I'm not so sure anymore. What do you recommend? Is there a real risk of getting mugged/attacked?

Also, any other safety advice would be highly appreciated.

      Thanks a lot.

      Ireland Nov 22, 2016 at 9:51 AM

Has anyone ever hired a private driver in Ireland? This would be done in lieu of renting a car. Is it expensive? Recommended? I'm planning a drip that goes from Dublin south around the shore up to Galway and back to Dublin. This would probably be done in a week's time. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

    • Waterford Worth it?

      Ireland Nov 8, 2016 at 5:54 AM

I am travelling to Ireland next May and will be there for about 10 days. Due to time constraints my friend and I are going to be staying in the southern part of the country. I love Waterford Crystal and would like to go tour the factory and store. However, it seems that there isn't much else there to see so I'm not sure if we'd spend the night there. We will be travelling by train and it doesn't look like there is anywhere to store luggage for a few hours. With our limited time, is it worth it to go to Waterford? Are there other things we shouldn't miss there that I'm missing? Just for reference, we're planning to spend 3 nights in Dublin and then also hit Cork, Limerick, either Ennis or Shannon, visit the Cliffs of Moher, go to Galway and then make our way back to Dublin. What do you think? Should we go to Waterford? Thank you for any help you can give.

      Bray Apr 2, 2009 at 10:16 AM

I have a quick question. Why do the farmer's separate the fields with stone walls? Is there some reason for it or is it just another form of fencing?

    • Staying in Rathdrum... things to do/places to eat in the area?

County Wicklow Apr 1, 2009 at 12:22 PM

Hello, my soon-to-be husband & I are staying in Rathdrum for about 6 days in June and I haven't done much research because it is our honeymoon and I'm otherwise preoccupied with wedding plans. Are there any suggestions on things we should see, pubs with good food/music? Also any other suggestions outside of the area that are good for day trips (we are staying in Dublin for 5 days following our stay in Rathdrum). Thank you!

      Bray Mar 25, 2009 at 7:50 AM

I was needing to find out how much time the train takes from Bray to Dalkey and if we walked up the coastal road how long that would take? Isn't it only a 7 mile distance and is there a stop in Dalkey between Bray and Dublin train route? Thanks in advance.

    • Powerscourt and Glendalough in the same day?

County Wicklow Feb 3, 2009 at 7:27 PM

Hello, I will be traveling in Ireland for the first time this March and wondering if it would be easy/difficult/worthwhile to visit Powerscourt house and gardens and Glendalough in the same day? It seems that Powerscourt estate might offer enough to do in one day, but I heard that Glendalough is very picturesque being near the Wicklow mountains. If this is possible what would be the best means of travel?

Thanks so much for any advice or suggestions!

    • Family History Visit

County Wicklow Feb 16, 2008 at 11:21 AM

My family history includes ancestors described as being from "Vale of Avoca" and I have records of some being baptized in Arklow (although I have no parish names). What are the best resources for viewing parish records, as I've read that the parish priests are very covetous of those records and that libraries in Dublin are the best place to look.

Also, what about visiting cemeteries for headstones? Are they well maintained to the point that markings are visible? We are planning a vacation to the Avoca/Arklow region later this year and I'd like to visit the places of our ancestral home.

    • Seeking suggestions for best town to stay.

County Wicklow Jan 26, 2006 at 9:29 AM

      Hello

I'm planning to take my teenage daughters on a holiday in August. We want to visit Dublin but probably not stay there. I'm thinking that County Wicklow would be nice, perhaps somewhere on the Dart rail line.

I'd like a town that would be a good base from where to explore the area. That means good rail/bus links because we wont be driving. We're looking to visit some nice costal and countyrside spots, plus castles, country house gardens etc.

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions or advice.

      Thanks, Julian

      Bray

      Bray Apr 15, 2005 at 2:47 PM

      Hi,
Apologies for this being not a travel-related question as such, but I couldn't think of a better place to ask. I am thinking of taking a job in Bray, Co. Wicklow.

Is Bray an expensive place to rent a flat? How about the crime rate? Any other places I could consider living within a reasonable commute (30 mins max) of Bray? How about Dun Laoghaire ? South Dublin ?

Also, what about public transport into/around Dublin ?

      Thanks in advance
