    • Mountjoy Street - Dublin

      Dublin Nov 14, 2016 at 6:35 AM

I will be visiting Dublin starting tomorrow. My hostel is located on Mountjoy street, and recently I've read mixed review about the location. Generally this doesn't affect me, since I'm mostly a daytime traveler and tend to avoid unsafe areas/crowds. However, tomorrow I would be arriving around 9pm. My initial plan was to walk on foot from O'Connel Bridge, but in the light of the reviews I've read, I'm not so sure anymore. What do you recommend? Is there a real risk of getting mugged/attacked?

Also, any other safety advice would be highly appreciated.

      Thanks a lot.

      Piercings in ireland

      Ireland Yesterday

This is a totally random question, but I was just wondering how popular piercings are in Ireland? I'm American and have a total of 14 including my tongue, lip, and 2 in my nose..I was just kind of wondering if it's generally accepted or if I'll be getting weird or judging looks from people when I go to visit? I realize it's more than likely not a big deal, but if people who live in Ireland or have visited and know how a majority of the people feel about facial piercings there, I would really appreciate hearing about it. I've never left the country and I'm nervous about everything haha

    • Hiring a private driver

      Ireland Nov 22, 2016 at 9:51 AM

Has anyone ever hired a private driver in Ireland? This would be done in lieu of renting a car. Is it expensive? Recommended? I'm planning a drip that goes from Dublin south around the shore up to Galway and back to Dublin. This would probably be done in a week's time. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

    • Waterford Worth it?

      Ireland Nov 8, 2016 at 5:54 AM

I am travelling to Ireland next May and will be there for about 10 days. Due to time constraints my friend and I are going to be staying in the southern part of the country. I love Waterford Crystal and would like to go tour the factory and store. However, it seems that there isn't much else there to see so I'm not sure if we'd spend the night there. We will be travelling by train and it doesn't look like there is anywhere to store luggage for a few hours. With our limited time, is it worth it to go to Waterford? Are there other things we shouldn't miss there that I'm missing? Just for reference, we're planning to spend 3 nights in Dublin and then also hit Cork, Limerick, either Ennis or Shannon, visit the Cliffs of Moher, go to Galway and then make our way back to Dublin. What do you think? Should we go to Waterford? Thank you for any help you can give.

      How to get around

      Sligo Jul 29, 2014 at 3:47 AM

Hi VTs. We are spending about a week in Ireland next summer and will be staying in the countryside about 40km southwest of Sligo. What is the best way for us to travel so we can see the best of Ireland in that week? Driving is OK, but I'd like to be able to do some whiskey tasting, and enjoy the pubs, so alternate ideas are welcome. We will be 4 adults, and at the end of the week, we'll be leaving from Dublin.

      Thank you!

Visiting Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery in November?

County Sligo Nov 3, 2012 at 11:41 AM

I will be in the Sligo area this month and would very much like to visit the Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery. The trouble is that all of the information I am finding says that the area is only open April through October. Is the entire area gated, fenced, or otherwise closed off in during the 'off season'? Is it possible for me to just park and walk around so long as I understand that the visitor's center is not in operation? Thank you in advance to anyone who can help :-)
      Cheers!

    • TRAVEL FROM SLIGO TO?

      Sligo Jul 9, 2010 at 7:54 PM

After spending a week horsebackriding in the Sligo area, we have 5 days to travel to other areas of Ireland. Are there specific modes of travel from Sligo that make it easy to see other areas. We will be arriving from Dublin by train to Sligo, so would like to go to the Spainish Point area, but am not sure how to get there from Sligo since we will not have a car. Or, should we head to another area. We are very flexible. Are there car rentals in Sligo that allow us to drop off the car in Dublin where we will be flying home? ANy type of information or suggestions would be appreciated? This is our first visit abroad to Ireland.

    • lodging near sligo train station

      Sligo Jun 7, 2009 at 8:57 PM

Can anyone recommend a hotel or B&B in Sligo that is not too far from the train station? (Unless the train station is in a dreadful part of town that you'd discourage staying in.) Main concerns are something accessible to my 93-year-old mom who uses a push walker and can't do a lot of stairs at one time. Did you have occasion to use either taxi or bus from the station to the hotel or B&B? Do you recall the approximate cost?

Going to Co. Sligo for three weeks this summer.I am an assistant to a writer and we will be doing research for a book while there. Where do you suggest we stay? We can stay anywhere in Co Sligo. Ideally, we would like to stay in a house in a village center where we can walk to eat, to a pub. We are open to all accommodations that offer comofort and have charm.

County Sligo Mar 29, 2007 at 9:27 AM

I am a confused Yank whose wife has McGowan roots in the Barney area, near both Cloughboley and Ballyconnell, in something called Ballinfull. I understand that Barney is served by the Cloughboley PO. What exactly is "Barney"? A hamlet? A townland? A civil Parish? And what other POs serve the peninsula that consists of an area shown as Drumcliff on some maps (not the town or village of Drumcliff, which holds the remains of William B. Yeats)? And finally, what PO delivers the mail to Dunleavy's Market and to Ellen's Pub and to the immedaite area around the Carrigans cemetery? Help!!!!

    • Has anyone ever been to Easkey south of Sligo?

      Sligo Jul 10, 2004 at 9:57 AM

My husband and I have rented a cottage in Easkey for our base as we explore the coast. I can't find much information on the town except that it's well known for surfing. We also plan on getting up to Killybegs since this is where my ancestors Derry's are from and would love any information on the area from those who have traveled or live there. Thanks! Betsy
