      6-days to play

      Bangkok Sep 25, 2016 at 5:11 AM

We're a ~40-ish couple, I've traveled a lot around the globe. I've never been outside of the airport in Thailand. We have 6 full days in Bangkok (maybe 5 1/2 since we arrive very late and need some rest after 3 flights from US). I've checked many of the major travel sites (TA, LP, T&L, VisitThailand, etc), the forums here, the itinerary page here, etc. I've found a few recommended must-do's: Ayutthya, Chatuchak Weekend Market, Grand Palace, reclining Buddha/Wat Pho, floating market, Chinatown, Patpong or Suan Luum Night Bazar, and we want to do a 1/2 day cooking school (I see a lot of recommendations on this too). Now it's time to start to put it all together - an itinerary with places to stay, transportation, etc. I want to come up with a general itinerary (even restaurants though we will work with HappyCow on this as we'll both be eating vegetarian). I saw "HOT! HOT! HOT! This was BANGKOK!" - Bangkok by balhannah and I'm even more inspired to plan this better than my previous trips to other places. The trip is about 10 days away (I booked just a few days ago). We love to have local experiences when/where possible rather than just tourist stuff but I realize our time is short in Bangkok. Our trip is in early October so I believe it's not bad as far as weather is concerned.

First, from the airport, do you recommend taxi, Uber, train?
Next, what parts of the city should I look at for hotels? I will figure out the hotel from there as my searching is complex with various variables. However, I welcome recommendations.
Is tuk tuk/train the best way to travel around the city?
Day 1 (Thursday) should be something light and easy since we arrive at midnight the night before.
      Day 2 (Friday) - Buddha?
Day 3 (Saturday) - weekend market?
Day 4 (Sunday) - other weekend market (floating?)
      Day 5 (Monday) - cooking class +
      Day 6 (Tuesday) -
Day 7 - go home :( airport via Uber?

I know there's a lot here. I welcome any and all thoughts including a single tip all the way through suggested itineraries. I'm grateful for your time - thank you.

    • Are there more backpackers in Sukhumvit area or Khao san? Any bar crawls Bangkok?

      Bangkok Oct 13, 2016 at 2:03 AM

      Hi guys,

I've booked a flight to Bangkok mid Jan 2017 to start a 3 month long trip to SE Asia visiting Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.

It's my first time backpacking and I am travelling alone. I have been searching the internet for Facebook groups and forums where I can meet other backpackers to chat with before I leave. What is the best way to meet other backpackers in Bangkok? I can't really afford a planned tour with the big companies and would prefer my freedom. What are the best bars / hostels to meet other backpackers in Bangkok who are solo? Are there more backpackers in Sukhumvit area or Khao san? Is there any bar crawls I go on to get chatting to people? I've came across a website which offers inductions in Bangkok but to meet people on the go..

Thank in advance for any help :-))

    • How best to explore Chiang Mai surroundings - tours or on own?

by gurmsingh Online Now Mar 7, 2016 at 9:24 AM

Hello. Ok, in Bangkok, I decided to take mostly tour rather than on my own. With limited number of days, I thought that is the best option in Bangkok. But in Chiang Mai, i wonder if tours is still the best option. I do would like to do one day at some tribal village hopefully combined with biking. I have seen some biking tours that include one day stay somewhere. But when it comes to local Chiang Mai, am I better of to go to the main sites on my own? This is my first trip to this part of the world. Would appreciate some advice or pointers. I will be there from March 24th to 28 or 29. Thank you in advance.

by scottwade Online Now Dec 22, 2015 at 10:36 PM

      Hey there guys,

I wondered if you could help give me some clarity around a visa run I am doing tomorrow from Chiang Mai to Loas.

I have a triple entry visa and am just about up on my first 60 days, and am wondering if I need to just over to the border to Laos, get a Laos's VOA then just head straight back to get my second 60 days activated, or do I need to go to the Thai Consulate in Vientiane to activate it? I am asking because I can only seem to find posts about visa runs made from Chiang Mai to Vientiane when people are applying for a fresh new visa there (e.g are applying for a new single entry, double entry tourist visa etc)

Any clarity around whether I need to go the Consulate or not would be greatly appreciated.

      Many thanks!

Hi again - I am in Nong Khai struggling to decide if I should just amble over to Laos - thus wasting the last three weeks of my visa exemption - or to travel more in Thailand before going to laos. I would head north, centering in Chiang Mai because that is the easiest for me (no car, luggage) - What would be reasonable options for an older person with luggage? Not the boat! I have seen videos of that! Is there some kind of bus? Or a minivan that can take luggage? Etc whatever? Is it feasible for a non back packer? Thanks, Jean

    • Are the no shoes requirements strict in ALL Chiang Mai temples?

by bleubleubleu Online Now Jul 12, 2015 at 4:00 AM

Have polio and wear a knee to foot orthotic. Can remove it at home on dead level carpeted floors, but the slightest uneven surface (even the garden), brings about falls and great difficulty walking. Not so good at over 60. Am wondering if there are any temples in Chiang Mai who relax the strict no shoes rule for the disabled? For instance, was overwhelmed in India, where often accommodation was made for disability by squares of white cotton cloths being produced to wrap and tie around the shoes if unable to remove them.

      What to do - Recommendations!

by mickey.p Online Now Jul 11, 2015 at 2:51 AM

We have 3.5 days in Chiang Mai between Krabi and Phuket - what do you suggest for things to do?

I really want to do an elephant sanctuary (ethical, non mahout type) and have another post for this as the one I wanted to do is fully booked.

Other than this we are obviously going to do the night markets - any suggestions on how and where to go as I know nothing other than there's night markets to visit!

I have read a little about some water falls - this seems interesting but we cannot do too much physical activity. We did Tiger Temple yesterday in Krabi and I only made it half way. I am in the middle of my weight loss journey and have lost 5.5 stone but still not physically fit enough for major activities - but I'm 100 times better that I was at the start so I'm OK with this! If we could swim near water falls etc, this would be great - we have 2 teenage boys with us!

I have heard mixed reviews on the hill tribe, some say very good, others say way too commercialised?
We like Temples etc but we are doing Bangkok and Ayutthaya so many suggest that this will be more than enough temples!

Anyway, any other suggestions would be good!

Hi, I have over spent on the beach resorts we are staying at, so I now need to look at cheaper hotels in Chiang Mai - just wondering if anyone can suggest any little gems that I may not know of or may not show on normal search engines?

There's 4 of us - 2 adults and 2 x 16 year olds who can share 1 room as long as enough beds or 2 rooms is fine.
I need clean, central, own bathroom, must have air con and Wifi is kinda important but not the end of the world if not actually in the room.

Thanking you in advance for any suggestions.

I have to decide about the route from Mae Hong Son to Chiang Mai. The most popular is via Doi Inthanon (almost 7 hrs drive) but I have already been there couple of years ago. The alternative I had found out is via Mae Sariang (about 6 hrs drive) and via Mae Chaem (about 7 hrs drive). I have hired a car+ driver with cawho is familiar with the roads.
Any suggestion which route is more interesting sightseeing wise, will be appreciated.

Good time to ride Segway in the city?

by Melanie_Putra Online Now Dec 10, 2014 at 5:55 PM

We (2 pax) plan to take the Segway Tour on Sunday (10th Jan) but are not sure which time is better?
      1. 13:00-16:00 (3 hours)
      2. 16:00-18:00 (2 hours)
Issues under consideration are traffic and especially, temperature..

It'll be good to do the 3 hours after lunch then hang around until the night market starts around 17:30 but I'm worried it will be quite warm at that time. Thus, is it better if we take the 16:00 2 hours slot? Would it be cooler? I checked axact date for Jan 2014 and it topped at 33'C!! I don't like heat much :))
