      Wooden houses

Puerto Plata Nov 26, 2016 at 5:30 PM

I was on a tour of the city of Puerto Plata and the guide (named Jesus) spoke English but with an accent. He said something that I didn't quite understand. It was something to the effect that if you didn't use wood for your house that you had to pay two fees, one to the governor. I have not been able to find anything about this on the internet. I asked the guy who runs the tour agency and his response was

"I told to Jesus about your restlessness. I am sendimg you a Link where you can see some of our vitoriana Houses, and can read a little bit of the history, but you have to translate to english."

      diariolibre.com/m/noticias/l...

I looked at this website and translated some of it, but it appears to be mostly an argument about whether they should call the wooden houses with the gingerbread trim 'Victorian' or some other term - because apparently Victorian is a bourgeois European type architecture.

Can anyone think of what the guide was trying to say or the basic story behind it?

      Where to stay

      Cuba Nov 11, 2016 at 7:11 AM

I will be travelling to Cuba for 9 days with 5 other girls the 3rd week in February. I would love to get some feedback/suggestions about our trip. We are planning on maybe renting a place through Air BnB since there are 6 of us but am not sure what area of Havana? We love the nightlife, street dancing, jazz clubs, good food. We also want to stay one other area for 2-3 nights but am not sure what city?

Booking with National Hotel de cuba

      Havana Nov 29, 2016 at 7:18 AM

Do we have any locals there to help this?

We would like to stay the famous National Hotel de Cuba for a couple of nights in the Beginning of February, however the quotes was 936.00 CUC! ((964.08 EUR)! Personal friends who had spent nights there saying it shouldn't be that expensive, they paid around $100-$150 USD/per night.

There are saying that if one shows up there in person to the hotel's counter directly, one maybe can get a better rate.

Can someone verify this for us? Really appreciate this!

    • All-Inclusive or otherwise

      Jamaica Nov 2, 2016 at 11:00 AM

Hi all, My wife and I are in the planning stages of a Jamaican vacation for next fall (2017). She's mentioned staying at an all-inclusive, but I think I would prefer possibly a boutique hotel on the order of Jake's or The Rockhouse. I'm looking for input and suggestions about the pros and cons of each. Based on what little I know of Jamaica (this will be our first trip there) I'm leaning towards the Negril area.
      Thanks,

      Rob

Where to deep sea fish and snorkel?

      Jamaica Oct 26, 2016 at 6:06 PM

My husband and I are going to Sandals Ochi in June and are interested in a couple different excursions, but I'm not sure how all of this works, since this is our first resort trip.

We want to do deep sea fishing and snorkeling. The company the travel agent gave us is pretty pricey and I want to shop around. I'm guessing you can just take excursions from any company and take a taxi to the meeting spot. How does this work? Anyone have recommendations for companies to do deep sea fishing and snorkeling from?

    • Recommendations - All inclusive resorts? Montego Bay? Others?

Caribbean and Central America Oct 26, 2016 at 8:58 AM

Getting our feet wet with a trip to the Caribbean. Or maybe Mexico - not 100% sure yet. At least that is the plan to dodge the harsh winter in the upper Midwest.

We are looking at about 4 or 5 days in the Caribbean, sometime in the middle of February 2017. Would like an all inclusive type deal. Any recommendations on a resort/hotel?

Factors that would affect our destination: I am looking forward to the sun and the food. The missus is looking at sandy beaches and taking in some hikes and history tours. NEither one of is into snorkeling or scuba diving and such.

Any recommendations? Any good deals? Where do we start?

      Cuba Oct 25, 2016 at 11:35 PM

Will be staying near at Casa Particulares in Playa Larga next to Zapata Pen. & in Trinidad near Topes.

Was wondering if anyone can recommend great POI's that u particularly enjoyed (or didn't enjoy) in those two areas and preferable access / tour methods.

I am a backpacker type but don't desire to back back in those areas.

Day horseback ride, hiking, jeep or boat tour etc is what I had in mind.

Anyone have some particular fav recommendations or advice in these two areas?

      Thnx,

    • Resort in Barbados and Caribbean Islands.

Caribbean and Central America Oct 25, 2016 at 8:59 PM

Hello friends! My wife and I got married last month. Our friends have given us an awesome wedding gift. It's a week long stay at a Barbados resort named The Crane, http://thecrane.com/. I just went through their website and it looks awesome. It doesn't matter much, but would be great to know about experience of people actually spent a few days there. What I would like to know more importantly is how many of Caribbean Islands can we visit during our stay in the resort. We like to travel and visiting places is something we enjoy a lot. We have never visited Caribbean Islands before and it was in our bucket list for sometime. I would like some advise before making up some travel plans. Thanks!

    • 9 Day Itinerary

Costa Rica Oct 25, 2016 at 3:03 AM

      Hi Everyone,

We will be travelling to Costa Rica at the end of December and need some help with an itinerary.

We will be there for 9 full days - flying in and out of San Jose.

We have heard that there isn't much to do or see in San Jose so is it worth spending time there?

From the research we've done so far we would like to spend some time by the beach, some time doing activities such as zip lining, rafting etc, visiting the volcanoes, seeing wildlife etc.

What itinerary would you suggest? In terms of traveling around, would you suggest driving or taking buses?

      Any help is appreciated!

question 1: We arrive on Thursday at 1:22 am. Do I book a hotel for Thursday or Wednesday? Not sure.

question 2: We want to stay in Manuel Antonio National Park. I am a woman travelling with two children. Any suggestions? I don't want to pay much over $100, less would be great. Saturday - Thursday.

question 3: How do we get from San Jose to Manuel Antonio? Bus I am assuming and do I have to book that in advance? 2.5 hours journey correct? How much will I pay?
