    • How tourist-y is Antibes in January or February?

      Antibes Nov 7, 2016 at 12:32 AM

How tourist-y is Antibes in January or February?

I need a get-away soon, but I don't want to be around large numbers of tourists milling around, taking photos, partying. Unlike many tourists these days, I'm not "looking for the action" (excitement) at all.

I do speak French fluently and have been a francophile most of my life.

Is Antibes in the winter subdued enough, quiet enough for me to spend two weeks just de-compressing, wandering around, reading (French novels) and listening to classical music in my apartment? Or should I look elsewhere on the Cote d'Azur, somewhere smaller like Vence or Beaulieu, etc.??

    • Menton or Villefranche-sur-mer ?

      Menton Nov 5, 2016 at 11:46 PM

How would you compare Menton with Villefranche-sur-mer as a base to explore the Cote d'Azur for a first-time traveler (to the French Riviera) for two-weeks? I am looking for a quiet village or small town atmosphere, away from hordes of tourists, and crossed off Antibes, etc. for that reason. Somehow I narrowed down to my list to Menton and Villefranche-sur-mer. I know the latter is much smaller and seems to cater to a more upper-tier clientele, while the former has attracted many French retirees.

I do speak French and have a degree in art history, with interest in French history and literature. I will not have a car.

    • Solo woman traveling in Paris on New Years Eve

      Paris Nov 28, 2016 at 10:57 AM

I am a 54 year old woman who will be arriving in Paris Orly airport on Thursday, December 29 at 5 pm,
and flying out of DeGalle airport on Sunday, January 1 at 11 am.

      My questions...

      1. What area in Paris should I stay in?
Since I really only have two days I would like a great location to walk to things in the area and as a base for sightseeing. I would be so grateful for decent, hotel and restaurant suggestions in that area?

      2. What is the best/easiest way to get from Orly to "that area" at that time of day?

      3. Are there any good one day tours?
I would probably book that for Friday or Saturday, and spend the other day on my own exploring the area around my hotel.

      4. What is there to do on New Years Eve? I don't drink but would love to know what would be safe for me to do alone that night.

      Thank you very much!

Can anyone suggest a day-trip from Paris?

      Paris Nov 11, 2016 at 7:32 AM

I will be visiting Paris in a few weeks. I have been to Paris numerous times and know it very well. Equally, I have taken many day-trips from Paris and have been to all the obvious places (and even beyond). Can anyone suggest a new place I might visit? I am looking for a place within a two hour radius by train.

I like quaint places, and/or places that has a old worldly feel to them. I enjoy visiting places with a riverside setting as well e.g. Moret-sur-Loing.

Here is a short list of day-trips I have taken:

Amiens, Auxerre, Beauvais, Bourges, Châlons-en-Champagne, Chantilly, Chartres, Compiègne, Dijon, Fontainebleau, Giverny, Moret-sur-Loing, Orléans, Provins, Reims, Rouen, Senlis, Sens, Tours, Troyes, Versailles.

I have not listed other places I have visisted that are further a way e.g. Caen, Lyon, Metz, Nancy, Nantes, Rennes etc.

At the moment I am thinking of visiting Meaux (because there is a cathedral in Meaux), but I would like to have a few other places on my list. I thought of trying to get to Avallon and/or Loches, but it appears there aren't any direct (or very few direct) trains to Avallon or Loches.

      Many thanks

    • How expensive...?

      Villefranche-sur-Mer Nov 5, 2016 at 8:57 AM

How expensive are sundry items and groceries, not just tourist souvenirs? Is the mark-up really high?

Wow is the cab service at Bayonne Airport. I am concerned about scams and being over charged.

    • Bayonne or Biarritz

by virtual786 Online Now Aug 12, 2008 at 6:27 AM

I am planning to be in the Bayonne-Biarritz area for 3 days in mid Septmeber.
I have to be at the airport at about 7:45 on Wednesday, 17 September for my flight.
I can stay in either town. Which is closer to the airport and easier to get to by bus?

Also, what time do the buses stop running between the 2 towns?

      merci

    • Quartier St. Esprit in Bayonne

by ROOTLESSCOSMOPOLITAN Online Now May 7, 2007 at 3:28 AM

I have been to Bayonne a few times, but never ventured to the Quartier St. Esprit. I am thinking of staying at the Adour Hotel there this August. Anyone familiar with this Bayonne neighborhood? Is it quaint like Petit Bayonne or more industrial? Is it walking distance to Petit Bayonne?

    • Hotel de Ville in Bayonne?

by ROOTLESSCOSMOPOLITAN Online Now May 5, 2007 at 2:27 AM

I am planning a trip to Bayonne this August and would like to stay at a historic hotel. I've heard of a Hotel de Ville in Bayonne, but cannot find it on the Net. Does such a hotel exist? What is the Hotel des Basses Pyrenees like? Anyone know where I can find a picture of this hotel? Is it possible to rent an apartment in Bayonne and what is the St. Esprit quartier like? Any pics? Thanks for any help you can provide me.
