    • How tourist-y is Antibes in January or February?

      Antibes Nov 7, 2016 at 12:32 AM

How tourist-y is Antibes in January or February?

I need a get-away soon, but I don't want to be around large numbers of tourists milling around, taking photos, partying. Unlike many tourists these days, I'm not "looking for the action" (excitement) at all.

I do speak French fluently and have been a francophile most of my life.

Is Antibes in the winter subdued enough, quiet enough for me to spend two weeks just de-compressing, wandering around, reading (French novels) and listening to classical music in my apartment? Or should I look elsewhere on the Cote d'Azur, somewhere smaller like Vence or Beaulieu, etc.??

    • Menton or Villefranche-sur-mer ?

      Menton Nov 5, 2016 at 11:46 PM

How would you compare Menton with Villefranche-sur-mer as a base to explore the Cote d'Azur for a first-time traveler (to the French Riviera) for two-weeks? I am looking for a quiet village or small town atmosphere, away from hordes of tourists, and crossed off Antibes, etc. for that reason. Somehow I narrowed down to my list to Menton and Villefranche-sur-mer. I know the latter is much smaller and seems to cater to a more upper-tier clientele, while the former has attracted many French retirees.

I do speak French and have a degree in art history, with interest in French history and literature. I will not have a car.

    • Solo woman traveling in Paris on New Years Eve

      Paris Nov 28, 2016 at 10:57 AM

I am a 54 year old woman who will be arriving in Paris Orly airport on Thursday, December 29 at 5 pm,
and flying out of DeGalle airport on Sunday, January 1 at 11 am.

      My questions...

      1. What area in Paris should I stay in?
Since I really only have two days I would like a great location to walk to things in the area and as a base for sightseeing. I would be so grateful for decent, hotel and restaurant suggestions in that area?

      2. What is the best/easiest way to get from Orly to "that area" at that time of day?

      3. Are there any good one day tours?
I would probably book that for Friday or Saturday, and spend the other day on my own exploring the area around my hotel.

      4. What is there to do on New Years Eve? I don't drink but would love to know what would be safe for me to do alone that night.

      Thank you very much!

Can anyone suggest a day-trip from Paris?

      Paris Nov 11, 2016 at 7:32 AM

I will be visiting Paris in a few weeks. I have been to Paris numerous times and know it very well. Equally, I have taken many day-trips from Paris and have been to all the obvious places (and even beyond). Can anyone suggest a new place I might visit? I am looking for a place within a two hour radius by train.

I like quaint places, and/or places that has a old worldly feel to them. I enjoy visiting places with a riverside setting as well e.g. Moret-sur-Loing.

Here is a short list of day-trips I have taken:

Amiens, Auxerre, Beauvais, Bourges, Châlons-en-Champagne, Chantilly, Chartres, Compiègne, Dijon, Fontainebleau, Giverny, Moret-sur-Loing, Orléans, Provins, Reims, Rouen, Senlis, Sens, Tours, Troyes, Versailles.

I have not listed other places I have visisted that are further a way e.g. Caen, Lyon, Metz, Nancy, Nantes, Rennes etc.

At the moment I am thinking of visiting Meaux (because there is a cathedral in Meaux), but I would like to have a few other places on my list. I thought of trying to get to Avallon and/or Loches, but it appears there aren't any direct (or very few direct) trains to Avallon or Loches.

      Many thanks

    • How expensive...?

      Villefranche-sur-Mer Nov 5, 2016 at 8:57 AM

How expensive are sundry items and groceries, not just tourist souvenirs? Is the mark-up really high?

      Ouistreham to Angers

by ranger49 Online Now Jun 21, 2012 at 5:05 AM

We will actually be travelling on Saturday 7 July from the ferry port in Ouistreham to Blaison-Gohier 49320 - not far from Angers.

I have checked distance and driving times on both viamichelin and theaa route planners.
They both give the distance as about 275 km. Routes look similar but driving time on viamichlin is given as 4hours 40 minutes and only just over 3 hours on theaa site.
As we won't dock until 11.30am the shorter time would be preferable and I find that time difference hard to understand.

Can any regular French road users please advise - psmalo, gwened. anyone...?

I've been exploring Saumurs, Chemille, Poitiers, etc. trying to find an interesting village where we can rent a house for a few weeks and tour several villages of my ancestors in that area. We'd like to be near the river and within an hour of Angers for convenience of trains. Any ideas?

Angers to Loire Valley - cruise for a couple of days?

by Pawtuxet Online Now Jan 2, 2012 at 6:29 AM

I'm playing with some possibilities for our trip to France in September. Anyone know anything about some short cruises on the Loire in area of Angers? I'm thinking I would top out at about 3 days, but thought seeing the castles and such would be beautiful from the water.

by Andrzeju Online Now Oct 8, 2011 at 8:51 AM

      Dear Travelers,

I want to travel by bus from Paris to Angers possibly on winter. Is there a line servicing this route? How much does it cost? I would be most grateful for the links to some internet sites of bus lines (if possible in English, my French is on level zero). Do you know if there is a bus to Angers straight from airport in Paris(Beauvais)? Thanks in advance!

I am going to live in Angers, so I would like to know which district (quartier) is good to live. I mean well located in terms of transport, shopping and neighbor. How about close to university or city center? I will appreciate all information! thanks!
