      Which hotel

by grandmaR Online Now Mar 12, 2016 at 10:50 AM

I am going on a week cruise in the Netherlands area and after the cruise I want to go to the cheese market. In 1950 when I was 12, I went with my parents, and I would like to revisit even though I know that it is now a show for tourists rather than an actual market. My sister has the movies of the bouncing cheeses that my dad took. He also took some photos (which I have) but not as many as I would like and some of them are faded Poloroids.

Anyway, I made a reservation with for the College Hotel based on the information that they had facilities for handicapped and wi-fi. But it looks like they don't have an elevator, so I wonder whether I will be able to get to a room without going up steps. Last time I booked a room with no steps, there was only one step - so technically not "steps". But for me, on a scooter, one step is almost as much a problem as three steps.

So I made an alternate booking with the Grand Hotel, which does apparently have an elevator. But it has lots of negative reviews for noise (and also mosquitoes, mildew, parking problems, too cold or too hot and hard to use wi-fi), and apparently there is no vehicle access on Saturday (when we will be leaving) because of a market outside. I also looked at the Amrâth Hotel which is a little farther away from the action, but definitely does have an elevator.

So which hotel would be better?

I want to check in on Thursday, see the cheese market and maybe the museum on Friday, and leave Saturday morning. I will not have a car to park, but I will need to get from the hotel to a motor vehicle on Saturday in order to get to the airport. I don't really care about the noise that much.

I do want a clean room where I can scooter to the cheese market. Not sure whether I want breakfast - I think $17 is a lot to pay for breakfast - I'm not a big breakfast eater (at home I usually just have a banana), and Bob has his regular breakfast that he eats- hot chocolate, oatmeal and turkey bacon burned to a crisp. It seems like $17 is a lot to pay for that.

Hi there, I'm planning a trip to Amsterdam in April and we want to include some horse racing. I see that there is a track in Alkmaar (drafcentrum)? I would appreciate any information such as location, when the race days are and at what times etc. Also is it easy to get to from Amsterdam (where we will be staying) Many thanks for any help in advance.

    • Going out in Alkmaar

by Tamartje Online Now Jul 24, 2011 at 7:56 AM

      HI guys!

I'm coming to Alkmaar in September with a friend, we'll be in Alkmaar for one night (two nights actually, but on the first one we're going to see Blof :) )
Any recommendations for where to go at night?
I know it's a small place, so there might not be many options?
(I wonder if it's better to be in Amsterdam? Don't feel like, though)

    • Alkmaar B&B question

by wompbomp Online Now Nov 14, 2010 at 8:18 AM

We hope to visit Alkmaar next May; we plan to stay 3 or 4 nights. Is anyone familiar with Pension Onassis? They seem to be centrally located, and offer a room with private bath for 70 euros per night. Other accommodations with private bath seem to be considerable more. We are open to suggestions. We prefer to keep our lodging costs down so we can visit Europe more often and stay longer! Thanks for your help.

Schiphol Airport to Alkmaar Cheese Market

by bbcrayon Online Now Apr 7, 2009 at 2:11 AM

I will be arriving Netherlands, Schiphol Airport on 24 Apr 09, Friday at 7am. I would like to visit the Alkmaar Cheese Market on the same day right after I arrive. I have the following questions, will be much appreciate if someone can advise:

1).I'm not sure how fast the Netherlands immigration office process will take. However, if I take a train leaving airport at 8am, do you think it's possible to arrive at the Cheese Market before 9:30am?

2). Where can I find the train schedule from Schiphol Airport to Alkmaar? How frequent is the train?

3). As I will have my baggage with me, should I leave the luggage at the locker at Alkmaar station? Do they have a locker for 25" baggage? How much will be the locker rental?

4). From the Alkmaar train station, how can I get to the Cheese Market? Is it within walking distance?

      Many thanks!

We will be arriving by train for the Alkmaar Cheese Market before heading on to Amsterdam. Does the train station have lockers where we can stash our luggage for the day?
