    • Mountjoy Street - Dublin

      Dublin Nov 14, 2016 at 6:35 AM

I will be visiting Dublin starting tomorrow. My hostel is located on Mountjoy street, and recently I've read mixed review about the location. Generally this doesn't affect me, since I'm mostly a daytime traveler and tend to avoid unsafe areas/crowds. However, tomorrow I would be arriving around 9pm. My initial plan was to walk on foot from O'Connel Bridge, but in the light of the reviews I've read, I'm not so sure anymore. What do you recommend? Is there a real risk of getting mugged/attacked?

Also, any other safety advice would be highly appreciated.

      Thanks a lot.

    • Hiring a private driver

      Ireland Nov 22, 2016 at 9:51 AM

Has anyone ever hired a private driver in Ireland? This would be done in lieu of renting a car. Is it expensive? Recommended? I'm planning a drip that goes from Dublin south around the shore up to Galway and back to Dublin. This would probably be done in a week's time. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Looking for help to get to Shannon airport from Cork airport. I can't find any easy way. I am actually coming from Amsterdam in early August 2017. Did not want to fly via of Heathrow due to layovers and high cost flight via Heathrow. Any help would be appreciated.

    • Waterford Worth it?

      Ireland Nov 8, 2016 at 5:54 AM

I am travelling to Ireland next May and will be there for about 10 days. Due to time constraints my friend and I are going to be staying in the southern part of the country. I love Waterford Crystal and would like to go tour the factory and store. However, it seems that there isn't much else there to see so I'm not sure if we'd spend the night there. We will be travelling by train and it doesn't look like there is anywhere to store luggage for a few hours. With our limited time, is it worth it to go to Waterford? Are there other things we shouldn't miss there that I'm missing? Just for reference, we're planning to spend 3 nights in Dublin and then also hit Cork, Limerick, either Ennis or Shannon, visit the Cliffs of Moher, go to Galway and then make our way back to Dublin. What do you think? Should we go to Waterford? Thank you for any help you can give.

I'm heading to Achill Island next weekend...loved reading all of your posts and seeing your photos! Spent a week in a thatched roof cottage in Donegal last fall and am renting a similar cottage on the island. I'm expecting to have bad hair all week and will pack rain gear. Flying into Shannon and will pick up groceries on the way. Any tips or advice for a September trip?

      Midges on Achill

by RhineRoll Online Now Apr 27, 2004 at 8:44 AM

One rarely gets warnings/complaints about Midges in Ireland, but at least in areas with blanket bog (like Achill Island), they must be around. Is my guess correct, that the problem is not as bad as in the Scottish Highlands? I'll be on Achill in July and should there be a warm and calm evening, it'd be great to be able to sit outside the cottage without having to fear Scottish-style air raids. I'm a bit careful after my last year's experience from South Uist. People told me there weren't any midges on the Outer Hebrides, and if there had been (strictly theroetically speaking...), then it'd be always windy enough to keep them from flying. WELL, we had a hot week with temperatures well above 25 Celsius and NO wind...flat out calm... and GUESS WHO was VISITING US??? GRRRRRR HOW I HATE THOSE MIDGES!!!!
