Since I'm not a tech person, I can't figure out 1. Do I need antivirus protection? Noticed yesterday while surfing on VT that some box with indecent pictures opened. 2. How do I get my photos/vids taken with my iPad on my computer? I have an IPad3 without 3G and I don't have a smart phone. Thank you!
I believe that you have to send your photo's to Icloud (which is a free service) and then download them to your pc from there. I don't know about the antivirus and I don't know if my Ipad has it :o)

Are you saying the indecent pictures were on VT, or do you just mean you were on the internet, happened to be looking at VT, and they showed up from somewhere else? I'm also interested to know about iPad protection.

The iCloud suggestion works. You can also send the photos to your email and open/save them on the iPad. In addition there is a direct USB type "kit" you can putchase to upload from the camera or computer.

As for anti-virus protection, on a computer, my answer is definitely. There are many commercial and free ones. While most of the commercial ones do take up a bit of cpu, my main systems have been virus free for years. For the iPad, I'm not familiar with any products and for the most part Apple OS is not as vulnerable as Windows.

Pam, there were not on VT but poped up when looking at VT, it seemed to me I got redirected when I opened a meeting on the meetings calender. When I looked later it was ok.

Al, I don't want to upload pics on the iPad but download them to the computer. They were taken with the iPad. I thought of emailing them but then I don't understand all this business I had to fill in to add my email to the iPad. Where are those numbers and passwords coming from? I sure don't have them. Thanks for all your answers so far.

I see the easiest way to transfer files iPad --> PC is USB and to be able to read/write between FAT & NTFS by using SW tools like "NTFS 3G"

You definately need a antivirus protection, last winter someone managed (i think when i was using the wifi in my hotel) to use my iTunes account to shop for € 200, it took me quite a while to sort it out so i didn´t have to pay.

Uli; what anti virus software do you use? I'm also interested in the security side as our ipad is wifi only we use a lot of public networks. Thanks

Sonja, Upload/Download, it's pretty much the same. The easiest would be using iTunes and the Sync facility with photos.

As far as antivirus protection: - Apple does not allow anti-virus/anti-malware apps in the App Store although a few months ago I read it is working with Kaspersky to have them review the security of iOS. - So, this leaves the iOS user to use alternative browsers to have some form of online protection while browsing with their iPhone, iPad, iPod touch... Check with your favorite antivirus company to see if they have an iOS browser. The major vendors will most likely have a free one. I use Webroot SecureWeb Browser. It's free and comes from the antivirus vendor product I use - Webroot SecureAnywhere. Checks the websites you go to or click-through to see if it a known malware sites. Neat thing is that when you do an internet search within the app, it checks each link and indicates with an icon next to the link if it is a safe site or not... webroot.com/En_US/consumer-p... itunes.apple.com/us/app/webr... The thing with these alternative browsers is that you need to remember to use them rather than the default of Safari when browsing on your iDevice. Unfortunately this will be the case until Apple becomes more open to letting third party security apps onto the app store and integrating with iOS.

With regards to transferring photos/videos from iDevice to/from computer: I try to not use iTunes and USB cord so I use transfers via wireless (wifi or bluetooth). There are numerous app on the App Store which allows wireless file transfers between devices and computer as long as they are all on the same network at the same time. Just do an app store search for "wireless photo transfer" or "wireless drive" to get an idea of the free and paid apps available. You typically type in the address (like 192.168.?.???) given by the app on your computer's browser to establish connectivity and select files to transfer. The one I use is called "Photo Transfer App". It's a pay for app but this is one of the first apps to provide wireless transfers on iOS and guides you through the process nicely. http://phototransferapp.com itunes.apple.com/us/app/phot...

I have an Ipad with Wifi only. I have an Apple store (Itunes) account which i find great. I dowload different apps from it, some are totally free and some you have to pay for. I just connect my Ipad to the main computer with a USB cable, open my Apple store account and synchronize. Everything is automatic so it is very simple. After that all the photos from my Ipad are on my main computer and vice versa. I do the same with my Iphone and my Ipad touch, and the good thing about it is that you can choose which apps and photos go to which device. You can also share the same photos and apps on all your different devices. I don't use an anti-virus on my Ipad, only on my main computer. I have also had some indecent photos on my Ipad, but they disappeared after I emptied the reading list and the history. I have some teenage boys in the house so I guessed they must have used my Ipad and clicked on a wrong link:-) I don't use my Ipad to do payments, only for surfing so i don't feel i need an anti-virus.

You can register your email address on your Ipad so that you receive all the emails that you usually receive on you main computer on your Ipad as well (works of course only when you are connected to WiFi if you don't have 3G). Just open your browser, Safari, click on Bookmarks, Ipad User Guide, Mail, and there you'll see how to register your email address on your Ipad. Once you have registered your email address you'll be able to send photos to your main computer.
