My Firefox sick after VT URL entry.

by australia2 Online Now Jul 30, 2012 at 6:22 AM

A couple of hours ago I followed a URL address in the misc forum by ATLC (?). Only one side of the 'conversation' was coming up - with 'craic'. I did not get to that VT address and my Firefox (14) browser has been struggling ever since. Opening a second Window appears to be cause (?) effect mostly. A little message appears about a 'search ???' being blocked. And then all Browser activity hangs. I manage to get to the 'End Now' choice on a Program Manager box after I close the Browser, right click, on the bottom 'Task Bar. Maybe something in a toolbar in/on my Browser. Any one else having trouble??

I don't use Firefox (and have had no problems) but have you cleared your cache/history? That's always the first thing to try. If the problem persists, run a virus scan (although ATLC would not knowingly post a link with issues).

Is this still happening after closing computer and restarting? Do you use tabs instead of windows? Where does the message about "search" being blocked come from. That is, is it a firefox message or your computer protection programme? Can you further describe "only one side of the conversation was coming up" ? Was this referring to the VT thread where the url was posted? or was it the result of the url posted?

Thanks all for the suggestions. The trouble started after I mistakenly did a h'light/copy and paste of the URL on the first 'page' of the ?TLC's post - as it came up on my browser. I did not understand the question and went to that to find out.(???) The whole 'link/search' operation got caught up on itself. 'Searchqu toolbar'. Not sure but that may be part of Firefox itself or an add-on. Googling, I removed it. Still not sure where I am. Opening multi Windows instead of 'New Tabs'. Even when selected via Options. I'm running 14.0.1. More trying coming up. Thanks.

Pam I'd be curious how it comes up for you when you do this: 'The trouble started after I mistakenly did a h'light/copy and paste of the URL on the first 'page' of the ?TLC's post - as it came up on my browser.' That's where only one 'side' comes up - and still does.

ATLC's link just leads to her past post on Misc, from 2007. That's not why your comp has gone awry. Searchqu is a re-direct browser hijacker. You didn't get it from ATLC's link: that's when you noticed it. You may have got it pages (not VT pages) you were looking at beforehand or, more likely, from something you downloaded (freeware, shareware, whatever).

Have you run a full virus scan?

Uh-huh. I just keep on running Task Manager to 'End Program' as it hangs, a number of times and slowly but surely - nearly - things settle down. I have removed as many traces as I can of the Searchqu *program. Clean Sweep does a pretty fair job together with Control Panel's Add - Remove .. I think that *prog was the culprit. No trouble before that session. Everso ta. "Keep behind the Corgi, James (Mr.Bond?)."

*prog??? If you have an anti-virus program (?) you should use it to scan and remove, rather than relying on task manager etc. Viruses and hijackers and things can hide in places you can't easily access (or even access at all) via Task Manager & Control Panel.

I've just realised what you meant by >Only one side of the 'conversation' was coming up The 2007 thread has some missing posts because the member concerned has either since been deleted or chose to close his/her account and delete his/her pages. That's why it looks as if you only have one side of the conversation.

Well done J. But did I see reference to our dear friend, craic?? (I'm trying to break a record for not picking up an I'net virus!!) Just chatting with fellow Aussie, Alison, al2401 about the Sydney Harbour Bridge as she recently did the tour to the top!! I was trying to remember where its twin was over your way. I thought it was in Scotland but just found it in your Newcastle - on Tyne, of course.! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Throug... > The one she mentioned was the New York Hell's Gate Bridge. All Arch type.

It seems Craic had posts deleted from that thread.

Probably because it was a sub-conversation with JTF. Laurie I'd say you got the invasive search bug somewhere else, but that you happened to be using VT when it emerged. Many of us have copy and pasted that same url with no consequences.

I knew that question would come. Yes. I can transfer any to CD's - or mp3's. I am an incurable 'It will come in handy later' type fixer. I'm currently collecting VHS VCR's via Ebay. Storage space is my problem. :-(
