It depends on a lot of factors. My company uses VPN (Virtual Private Network) to ensure privacy when I check information on the company system or check my email. Everything is highly encrypted and totally private.

If you use an "open" Internet connection without a VPN as Manfred has suggested, yes, your information will be available to the world just as it is on any other computer unless there are precautions like encryption on the information going/coming to the computer you are using. If you do not use your own computer, rather one at a kiosk at a hotel or internet cafe, be certain to clear cache and cookies from any browser you use.

you have only VPN as technology to communicate with your company site and start running and checking your systems/applications, so in this scenario your company must apply some rules & polices on the PCs that need to establish the connection if the minimum requirements not exist on PC/ smartphone the connection will not be established

Vpn can help you on this situation, and I am trying this all the time. If you want to keep much higher security about encryption, you can consider using l2tp or openvpn, my choice is popvpn.com, just for your reference.

VPN I currently use is from PersonalVPN.com (annual plan). Other options I've previously used which has shorter term options is from hotspotvpn.com And a final option is HotspotShield from anchorfree.com which has free and paid versions. I choose VPN options that I can use on multiple devices like laptops, tablets, smartphone/iPod Touch devices. Also, if traveling to multiple countries, I would choose the closest gateway node from your VPN provider as this would speed things up.
