Global Positioning Systems

by arthurgjr Online Now Jul 20, 2012 at 4:36 PM

I am planning to take 30 days and drive through Europe--starting in Germany, heading south to Switzerland and Austria then heading north through France, Belgium, Luxemburg, The Netherlands and Amsterdam, and then back to Germany. Can anyone advise me on the best GPS to purchase before I leave the states? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

One that included maps of the countries you plan to visit. I regularly go to the Baja and "North America" to the GPS companies does not incude ANY of Mexico with one exception that I found with one Magellan model. I've not checked for Europe but I actually get better maps on my iPhone with Google than I do with my Magellan GPS. I've got a running battle with the map makers and Ford as my 2012 Explorer doesn't include the Baja either. The "excuse" is that it takes time to create maps (LOL).

We have a Garmin that we use in Europe. Lately the cars come equipped with GPS so we haven't used it for a couple years, but we keep the maps updated. You would need the Model nüvi® 2475LT with maps of the U.S., Canada, Mexico & Europe. Here is the Garmin web site but it might be less expensive on Amazon.com buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?... When you look through this, be sure you get one that has European maps on it. We take ours along and use it as a hand-held. When we park in a city, I set the parking lot as "home" and when it's time to return to the car, if we are lost in the city, I just get out the GPS, hit Home and we go back to the parking lot. We haven't needed it often but once is enough. I noted the Garmin Model nüvi® 3450 has US, Canada and Mexico for the person who replied above. BTW, are you renting or leasing a car in Europe? If so, can't you get one equipped with GPS so you don't have to take one with you? Just a thought. Enjoy your trip.

Hi Every car that we've hired in Europe in recent years has come equipped with a GPS as standard. This has a number of advantages: firstly, you don't have to pay extra to purchase a GPS or pay to upload European maps. Secondly, you don't run the risk of damaging the GPS in transit (or leaving it behind you in the hire car, which is common when people bring their own). Thirdly, the local maps are likely to be the most up-to-date available (especially if you hire from the reputable companies). All GPSs should offer you the option to change the language: ask at the point of hire if you don't know how to do this. I would check when you hire the car to see if there is a GPS included, but frankly I'd be surprised if there isn't, as they have moved from being a 'luxury' to a 'standard' feature for all new cars. Regards Cathy
