I have purchased a phone from Verizon which I was assured would work in Australia. But it does not. The locals here say that Verizon says that they have service here, but it is quite spotty. My granddaughter's phone (AT&T) also cannot find a signal. What is the cheapest way to get around this. I am thinking of getting my granddaughter an Australian phone.
Have you tried your phone with an Australian sim card?

We tried that today. Went to a phone store. They said both phones were locked. Suggested we get them unlocked. The guy said my phone couldn't work because it was the wrong frequency. He said if he unlocked my granddaughter's phone, it would wipe it of all date. She didn't want to do that so we bought a phone for her.

You need to buy a multi-band phone. Even if your Verizon service theoretically works abroad (this will be very expensive, BTW), you need to have a phone of the type and frequency which will work in Australia. Probably the best bet would be to buy a quad-band, unlocked GSM phone, then buy a SIM card in Australia. You could also just get a cheap Australian phone when you get your SIM card, but then it wouldn't work in the USA. Multi-band, unlocked phones are available online at Amazon and Wal-Mart. I got mine at Cellularabroad.com (but don't buy the SIM cards there!) Here's a good primer on international cell phones (though it's more geared to Europe) ricksteves.com/plan/tips/cel...

I thought that was what I bought. Oh well.
