Autosave

by Benson35 Online Now Jul 4, 2012 at 1:54 PM

Can your reviews not automatically save after a certain amount of time please? I'm getting really annoyed losing work if my computer decides to misbehave or I accidentially navigate away from my page. Is this possible VT HQ? Hayley :)

I am not speaking for VT HQ, but depending on which web browser you use there are several browser extensions that help with this problem. For example, I've installed the Lazarus Form Recover 2.3 add-on in Firefox. It saves form input as you type and offers ways to recover your work in the case of computer, network, website, or user malfunctions. I'm not sure if there is such an extension for Internet Explorer, but if not you might also want to consider switching browsers. Hope that helps, Ken

Yes it is possible. Does VT wish to spend the money which we the benefactors do not spend, perhaps not. Common sensence and knowledge of computer use will prevail on how to recover pages but for "text entry" I'd the best suggestion is to have the text in a file that is being used to copy/paste or just reference for text entry to a web pag Unless designated and even so I'm suspect, web sites are not backup saviours. YOU need to ensure you have backup and can recreate pages that you have entered.

Yes, I agree it's something for which we should take individual responsibility. But I know how frustrating it can be. Many people write tips in e.g. Word first, then copy & paste the text into the VT template. I don't do that: I can't be bothered. I just highlight and copy all text before I hit the 'save' button (and I always save text before uploading any photos, because that's when things most often go awry..and that's not automatically anything to do with VT). Then, if something does go awry, the copied text is 'there' (goodness knows where!) and can simply be pasted into the new template or into Word if I need to do so (e.g. if it's a problem with my comp or internet). I've also found that using Google Chrome allows me to 'get back' replies etc which have been 'lost', using the back button. That was not the case when I used IE.

    >Many people write tips in e.g. Word first, then copy & paste the text into the VT template. Hayley, after losing umpteen tips/forum replies mid-post, this method has worked best for me. I usually compose them in an email (my own - not VT mail) and then copy/paste the text into VT. It has saved a lot of frustration!

If I remember correctly, we've had this discussion here on VT before. Many members have lost their work or replies if they have not saved their work first. As VT has no autosave feature, I find it wiser to write reviews, tips in Word first, save, then copy, paste into VT. In replies to Forum questions, easier to select all, copy and then hit Post Answer button, as leics has suggested. The copied text is in your computer's memory, so you may paste it into another reply, should the first one go awry.

I'm wierd as I can't write fluently on a wordprocessor. I can write by hand or I can write when I'm online because both of those have a sort of "immediacy" that writing on a word processor somehow lacks. PS In the old days I could type on a manual typewriter quite happily.
