for me I didn't activate a notification email to may personal email "external email" because there are a lot of spams on VT mail and I don't want to forward them to my personal email

S.VTM, as a member for only just over a month you cannot possibly state that there are 'a lot of spams' in VT mail. There has never been a 'large number' of spam mails on VT mail; staff remove the mails and the accounts almost as soon as they are reported (by just one member). Recent changes to site security (before you joined) have reduced this small number even further. Perhaps you were confused by G's earlier post that the *external* VT mail address gets a huge number of spam mails? He was referring to the external address...virtualtourist.com That is entirely separate from VTmail.com, the addrss members use to email each other and from which the poster received notification. Jeanette, if your friend is certain she did not email you (even inadvertently, perhaps clicking 'send' when she had changed her mind about writing) then I can only assume it was a random glitch.

S.VTM...if you personally are receiving a lot of spam in your VTmail (which would be unusual) then I assume you are reporting each and every one directly to abuse, using the 'report spam' system?

Jeannette I hope you still have the email and can send it to the staff to show them. I wonder if the email was a name similar to your friend, but actually a spammer, and the spam had already been removed? I very rarely get spam mail forwarded to my external mail in this method.

A spammer using a very similar username is certainly a possibility. Hadn't thought of that....

@S.VTM - I noticed you left a comment on a new member's page yesterday - (perhaps after receiving a Spam mail) and you would perhaps also have noticed the comments already left by two longstanding members of VT which certainly give the impression that a great many spam mails are received. They did decline after recent changes but some are still getting through.

Yes, telling spammers that we see 'hundreds of spams just like yours" is a note I often leave to let them know that they are neither original or apt to suck anyone in on our site. We used to get a lot more spam in our VT mail than we do after they implemented some recent barriers to keep them out. A few still sneak through but not many, and they're easily reported and deleted. I block outside mail to my VT address, and don't allow mail to my external mailbox other than occasional communication with the staff - like sending photos for press releases. Not sure what caused Jeannette's problem here.

A few spammers and promo-posters/advertiser will always get through. I doubt there is a public forum site anywhere which does not have some of each; I have certainly seen plenty on other sites I've used over the years. I see no way of blocking all of them whilst maintaining the open access which, imo, is an essential part of VT's ethos. But, imo, stating VT has 'a lot' of spam is factually inaccurate. VT has some, and some of us get some spam mails...but 'a lot'? No, not even before the new security systems were brought in.

Quite right, J. I should have clarified the "We used to get a lot more spam...." comment as simply in relationship to the very few we get now. We never got scads of them - just more than we do now. I exaggerated the number on that note I left for the spammer. :O)
