Location page suggestion.

by planxty Online Now Jun 27, 2012 at 11:40 PM

Apologies in advance if I am missing something obvious and also if I am suggesting something that is going to give the extremely busy techs more headaches. I am currently trying to update all my pages technically, things like checking hyperlinks and amending them if they are dead, adding new ones where none existed before etc. I have noticed that there does not appear to be a "contacts" section on intro pages for a location to link to an external website. I was amending my Italy pages and found some very good official websites for each municipality with lots of useful information. An official Tourist Information Centre for a town or city is a fairly common thing as well. Would it be an idea to provide a website link facility on the intro page so the reader could have a one-stop link to a good resource for the location? The only other option I can see is to create a seperate tip "things to do?" purely for the purpose of supplying the information and that may be overlooked. I hope this makes some sort of sense.

Who don't you simply include the link in the text you are writing for your intro page?

No thanks. Let's keep our VT pages personal, individual and independent.

    >for me i can't trust any info about the destination that planning to visit if the official site didn't mention it Why are you on Vt then? I absolutely agree with Kathrin. The whole point of Vt is that it gives *independent* information and opionions. I don't want the site linked with any 'oficial website. Fergy, what I do is to make a hyperlink on the location page...something like e.g. 'You can find the official site for x transport here', with 'here' being a hyperlink to the official site. Or you could simply make your own 'Useful contacts/websites' list as part of the intro page text. You could put the web address as a hyperlink or give it another name.

But you suggest that only official sites are trustworthy. So does that not also apply to the information you post on VT?

I beg to differ. There is no difference whatsoever: information is information. However, this is not the place to continue this discussion.

Oh dear, I really didn't mean to start anything here. The point I was making, although probably didn't put very well was that there is a faclity to add a web link on a tip page but not on the intro page for a location. I was suggesting that it might be a good idea to do that, that was all.

I know what you mean, Fergy...links become active hyperlinks automatically in tips, if you put them in the right section. If links will automatically become hyperlinks on the forums (as G has suggested they will) then I don't suppose that it is too hard to code intro pages for that as well, or to create a separate 'useful websites' section. But I am not techie and am not sure if the staff time involved in doing that would be worth the effort.
