Captions on Tip Photos

by ranger49 Online Now Jun 16, 2012 at 3:42 AM

I know this has cropped up before and there have been complaints about the way captions cut across and often spoil photos. But can anyone remember if we have been advised that this is to be changed - in due course - of course!

I don't think I have heard that anything is to be done to change this Barbara, only many comlaints about it. I have started to think twice about writing a caption unless it is really necessary.

I've stopped giving captions as they spoil the photos. I now depend on the accompanying review/tip.

Yes I brought it up ages ago...only PJ would know how to find it. G did not indicate it was to be changed. A few came up with ways around it...? to list titles of photos in the text was one solution as I recall.

Thanks everyone. It is more or less as I thought. I wrote a review yesterday with photo captions and had to "update" it within seconds - as soon as I saw the effect on some quite decent photos of giant sized captions. I won't use them in future but I think the list alternative is cumbersome compared to the old style caption below photo!

Hhmmm her is one (of many ) previous threads on the subject - VT Forum temporarily unavailable G. suggested leaving them off altogether..... Keyword search for Photo Captions if you are interested in seeing more opinions.

I hate the white strip too but don't think I've heard of any plans to get rid of it. My solution on intro pages is to put the caption as the title of the first chapter, which works well. On tips it's less easy, so I either forget about a caption and let the text point the reader to what the photo shows, or just live with having my photos spoilt - neither is ideal :-(

@WanderingCamel writes the photo captions in another colour at the beginning of a tip, like here: "Day 17: Mellow Mardin" - Turkey Things to Do Tip by TheWanderingCamel That makes sense and looks nice I find. Ingrid

Great tip, Ingrid. I just started my long-overdue rewrite by removing all the captions on my intro and putting them alongside.
