Wikipedia Pop Up

by Adagio1 Online Now May 22, 2012 at 4:11 PM

Why am I getting a wikipedia pop up in the lower LH corner of my screen advising I have new messages. This notice is inactive when I click on it. Anyone else has this pop up? There appears to be nothing on this when I Google the query?

Not sure which browser you are using but if it is Firefox this might be relevant: support.mozilla.org/en-US/qu...

I don't have any apps but I do have Chrome. I have no idea why you have that wiki thing. Some ideas: Try spanner>tools>extensions and see if it's there (then you can remove it) Try spanner>downloads to see if you accidentally downloaded it without noticing (easily done). Then you can remove it. Try spanner>settings>show advanced settings>privacy>content settings and choose 'block all pop-ups'. You could also try 'disable individual plug-ins' on that same menu...the wiki thing may be listed here. Also 'cookies and site data' which will allow you to remove individual cookies.

Thanks J, It seems to be related to Google Chrome. When I went to its settings Google Chrome opened up in Settings. I have again hit the disable button on the pop up so lets see if that is permanent.

It won't have come with Google Chrome. Extensions (apps) don't (unless you choose them, or miss unticking boxes when you install something). It'll be an extension you accidentally got from somewhere. I only have two: skype and realplayer, both of which I have added. It just shows in Chrome because it's your browser. But hopefully disabling it will fix it ok. :-)

Wikipedia is a site not supported by ads. So if you see advertisements when visiting wikipedia, you will want to scan your computer for malware. blog.wikimedia.org/2012/05/1... Also, check to see if you are affected by the DNS Changer malware. Otherwise you'll know sometime by July when your internet access gets affected. http://www.dcwg.org/detect/ --Patrick

Thanks Patrick, once again you have been a big help. I am just beginning a scan now to see if there are any nasties in my PC. Wal

I have gone to the Extensions siteas advised in that link and found Wikipedia there already disabled. To be sure I removed the program from my PC but will re-install in a few days. Before I did this I enabled Wikipedia and immediately the aforementioned panel popped up advising me there were messages for me?? There was no evidence of any malware as all the extension shown were as I expected. Wal

Sometimes, well alot of times, when browsers are updated the installed extensions are not yet compatible with the new browser version. So maybe this is what happened in your case. I still don't know what the message is referring to. I have a portable copy of Chrome so could you tell me the name of the extension for wikipedia as I am curious about it. --Patrick

The app extension is Wikipedia the free encyclopedia I think it was developed by Shizhao. I hope this is what you want. I have re-installed the app and once again the pop up has occurred with: Wikipedia NOTICE You have new messages.

I am curious about how you got the app/extension. I think it is this one: chrome.google.com/webstore/s... ? It wasn't offered as part of my original chrome download (no extensions were included with that)but I suppose it might be now.

Go to your Wikipedia main page (wikipedia.org then click on English for example), login to your Wikipedia account, and click on the "Talk" tab to see your messages. You may have edited a page recently and the moderators or the system generated a message as a result of it. The cookie in your browser for Wikipedia is still logging you in automatically so you may want to log out before closing your browser. As far as I understand, the extension is just a link shortcut to the website wikipedia.org itself. So even if you have the extension disabled or not installed, if you go to wikipedia.org and the cookies still have you logged in, you should still see the pop-up.

Thanks Patrick I will go through those instructions today. Just been through 17 hours of power outage due to a tree falling on power lines. One of the penalties of living in a bushland paradise. Leic I chose Wikipedia as an app after I chose Google Chrome so all this is self inflicted. Wal
