Hello, I've just joined, so before I start building any pages I'd like some advice on photo sizes (and aspect ratios if these get distorted?). My digital photos are either 4MP, from my old Konica Minolta or 10MP, from my current Panasonic Lumix. Creating shrunk copies of some of these to upload is going to be a bit laborious. Will the originals upload OK?
The present VT help at: Photos sais: What Size Picture Should I Upload? You should not upload pictures larger than 560 x 500 pixels. Pictures larger than this will lose quality dramatically when uploaded into our system. ... but changes to the VT software are ongoing this whole year. PJ

OK thanks for that. It looks like I've got a bit of work to do before uploading any :)

You could do the resizing in a badge job. I usually Photoshop my best pictures and size the longest end to 640 (@300 BPI). PJ

Personally , I think you should try one to see if you like the end quality or not. I have never downsized a pic before uploading here, and I can't see any great difference in quality, let the program do it. After all most of the pics are only going to be seen as thumbnails anyway, if I want to hang a picture on the wall I know what I have to do, I don't worry about the quality that comes across on a computer screen.

Agree with the above. I compress my photo files before uploading, but only because my internet connection isn't especially fast and I've found compressing avoids time-outs. I wouldn't bother doing anything else just to have pic on VT. Most of mine look fine, at least to me, although the colours in some of my very earliest ones look a little odd now.

I think the Help section may not quite relate to the new uploader. Originals will load just fine, depending on your internet connection. However creating "shrunk copies" can be done in a split second LOL. I have a tutorial on my homepage for using Picasa, although it was written for the previous version of Picasa (view has changed a bit). It will give you the general idea though and you can resize complete folders in a few clicks.

VT has a recommended size as previously posted, but the "new VT" has a new jpg sizing engine. From the start of VT I've not changed my standard workflow which includes processing a folder of photos down to 1024x768. Back in the day most web sites could either handle that or would downsize it and if so I'd not loose that much. I keep that standard today and I don't see much difference in my old VT photos vs my new ones.

Have you considered downsizing your photos from your Menu option on your Panasonic Lumix? 10 megapixels for normal photography, including 3D, is huge, imo.

Hmmm...in minor objection, if at all possible, I'd suggest keeping you photos at the maximum your camera can take, and then post processing to downsize to a new folder a second copy. You never know when you will want to get a 20x40 of "that" shot.;...

I'm with you on that one Al :-)

Given how cheap external memory is nowadays, I like to take 10MP photos in case I want to get good quality prints made.
