Hi. Every time I log onto VT, I get a pop-up asking me if I want to upgrade my web browser. It gives me a choice of Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and some others. The first time I clicked, went through all the nonsense and it told me I already had a "newer version" of Internet Explorer. I thought that would end it but every time I log on, it reappears and I have to click "No Thank You" again. This has been going on for two days. Is there any way to get rid of it . . . and yes, I have disabled pop-ups so it should be there anyway. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry . . . It should NOT be there anyway.

We are trying to encourage people to update the oldest browsers that even the companies no longer support. SOme people are still using IE6 which is over 10 years old and now unsupported. What browser are you using? Are you using IE8, IE9? Do you know if you're in compatibility mode? Can you please turn off compatibility mode and see if it works? >Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing > uncheck "Automatically recover from page layout errors with Compatibility View."

I very very very highly recommend that you just switch to Firefox or Chrome or if you're on mac Safari. IE is terrible.

Using IE 9.00.8112.16421. I did click on the link in the pop-up; I did go to the IE web site that came up and I did download the update. Before installing it asked me if I really wanted to install telling me I already had a newer version of IE. Why would your pop-up download an older version? BTW, I did go to My Account Settings and my e-mail address is marked as verified. I suspect I can thank Giampiero for that . . . so thank you G.

Yup :) I think the problem is that the IE even updated versions have a setting that makes them act like the older versions. We'll probably have to disable the upgrade pop up unless that can be sorted. Still I highly recommend that everyone use either Firefox or Chrome. Much better experience and much more secure.

I am having the same problem she is. I also have a newer version than the one it tries to download. VT is the only site that gives me trouble with IE.

Yep...like I said above we'll probably remove that...but IE is a terrible browser...by far the worst. I'd encourage everyone to switch.

Our daughter (who is an engineer and spends her life on computers) switched to Firefox and had a terrible time with it. She switched back to IE and is very happy. I'm not going to change my browser for one pop-up fluke. Some things are worth spending time on and some are not. Changing anything on my computer is always a hassle so I avoid it whenever possible. If I have to close a pop-up on VT, I'll close it. Eventually it will go away . . . when enough people complain. LOL

Hey it's up to you... I have no horse in the game, I'm just telling you that I have to test on IE and it's painful and annoying when compared to FF and Chrome. :)

I did wrote about it this fact anyhow I've got some applications that's work only with IE (isn't the most usdes browser, is it?), and they works only in that way, but this about me, PLS do not care about me as if I'll have to choose about VirtualTourist and other business apps of course it's clear what I would choose. Better thing about from who this forum is used, beside not all users like to change their habits, they do not actually know how to do it!!!! Anyway this is a world forum so I suggest to care also to about milions of PC's users around the world still using W2K and IE 6.0, there are much more than believed (and MS says) These are not only in remote areas of the world and pls do not forger that the world is not only Silicon Valley. this is a humble/honest opinion of who wrote the first program for Computer before the PC come out. best regards

We have daily analytical data of what percentage of each browser visits our site.

In order to improve the security on your account, please verify your e-mail address by visiting the web page below: Whoa! Hold on! We appreciate your assistance in improving VirtualTourist." in my PERSONAL ACCOUNT WHICH IS NOT HOTMAIL? I just found it now...

Just wondering cgf if you gave that account to VT when you first joined? But only VT Mothership would have it

That email would only have been sent to your account if listed in your VT account or if you entered it and asked for a resend. Also perhaps if you have an autoforward from hotmail to your other account.

I did check, I've still got hotmail as first day and let's say I did already confimed twice my external email before.. from hotmail. the only place where I read both accounts it's my iPhone, no other mail client, probably something it happened there and one msg from hotmail went to xxxmail folder no problem do not worry, I still have a great respect of VT's jobs and I do believe they are very professional. :))

Hi Beausoleil and JessieLang, Can you try again and let me know if you're still seeing the browser upgrade message. To properly test, you'll need to close your browser and reopen it, and then navigate back to VT. Thanks in advance, Luke

Can you try again and let me know if you're still seeing the browser upgrade message. YES, I AM.

JessieLang, which browser and version are you using?

Yes, I'm still getting the pop-up and it's worse now because it keeps popping up randomly as I use VT. Have fun dealing with this one. LOL

"Our daughter (who is an engineer and spends her life on computers) switched to Firefox and had a terrible time with it." Sally that is interesting. I wonder (but not asking you to tell me, off topic here) what trouble she had. I have used Firefox for a long time now, but have IE on two computers, and Firefox is by far the more trouble free browser that I use. It's not that I don't believe you, I am just saying so that you know it's not such a bad browser. For me it's truly the best.

I have IE9, just updated, and I am getting that popup, too. If there is anything that can be done about this, please do.

I have to click "No Thanks" every day now when using my works laptop - I am not permitted to install a new version on it as it is controlled by the IT guys. Home PC is fine - latest IE version on that. ( I do have Firefox also but to be honest, not all my usual stuff works on that!)

OK...we're going to throttle back and only warn if you have IE6 which is more than 10 years old and is no longer supported even by Microsoft.
Be the first to rate this answer!
If you do have IE6, sorry, but you do have to get rid of that thing. It's terrible, a security risk, and messes up pages. If you have that, IE bugs you constantly to upgrade.

If only everybody knew how painful internet explorer is for web developers... =/
