Could I be the only VT Member who doesn't like the latest updates?

by starship Online Now Feb 2, 2010 at 12:41 PM

Am I the only one that doesn't like the latest VT update on the site's Homepage and Member Homepages? I find it difficult to see items as readily as it was before, and personally I don't think the way the "Dashboard" is structured that notices of comments, ratings history, etc., are quickly readable and easy to see as it used to be. I'm not sure why it was necessary to fix something that wasn't broke....just my personal opinion. I liked it better the way it was before!

Well I do find all the notices cluttered and have to search thru for "unread" at times. Be good if once you have read a thread these would go light automatically. As it is unless you reply it is all or none to go "pale as read" It is good though to get an idea of what the post says...often saves looking at the actual post. I would like the posts that have been "marked as read " to go into limbo with an option to bring them into view if you wanted.

I agree. It was much more 'approachable/userfriendly' as it was before. As has been said, 'If it's not broken why fix it ?' Also, and this may be just the minority of me, but how many are using wide-screen/large size monitors. I always have thought that this was just another move by our pressuring commercial, consumer system to again spend needlessly. For me it's a ruddy nuisance. All well intentioned feedback, I think !?.

All the notices on a thread are 'lightened' once you have read the last one, just as they were when we had the notices console. If you read one before the last, the remaining ones will still be in bold. Just as they were on the notices console. So I always click on the last one first, then read the previous ones. I don't have any problems with the new set-up, except the bouncing/scrolling thing (IE) and know they are on the way to fixing that.

"I would like the posts that have been "marked as read " to go into limbo with an option to bring them into view if you wanted. " -- YES!!! >> Agree! Also re the wide screed bit - I too am having problems with that. Currently using Zoom Text Only as a work around. I have been told that they are still working on this problem. Together with that is the need to use Click and Hold on the drop down menus, or I can't use them at all. All in all, I don't see that the new format is any improvement, but that may just be me.

I agree with those who say the new stuff is no improvement at all. And still the Forums do not work properly if I use Internet Explorer. It makes answering and checking out Forum questions a nightmare. VT is the only site that does not work properly with Internet Explorer.

What is the problem with IE? I use it and, since my super-duper new screen cratered on me in less than a year, am doing so my little old monitor - no problems with the display - but the back-to-the-beginning-every-time format drives me potty.

In another thread -- not only can I not find a "ratings history" count by week, even after reading other members' instructions -- I can't find a place where there is a ratings count for the week. As I said in the other thread, if something on your HP is not readily apparent and you have to get instructions just to "see" something, then where' the big improvement in the new setup. I liked the window that used to pop-up that gave you all the info. in one compact area.

The width problem is not specific to IE - I use Firefox. I do agree with starship about the little drop down menu that popped up only in one corner of the current screen w/o having to go back to the top each time. Annoying that is.

roamer61 writes: "No problem with IE. Problem I noted has been fixed." You must be a lucky person. I use IE and have to scroll like a maniac because whatever I do - 1. look at an answer in the Forum and go back by hitting the back arrow, 2. answer an question and click on "Return where you were in the Forum", 3. click on replies in the Notices Board) - I always end up at the top of the page. Previously I got exactly to the spot where I had done something listed under 1 to 3. It is very time consuming and annoying to scroll down and search where I had stopped before the urge to answer a question hit me. When I check answers in the Forum via the Notices board and get to the top of the thread I have to scroll down and search where the new answers are. In the meantime it puts me off so much that I often do not check answers if there are two or three listed because I know if I do it, the whole maniac scrolling starts all over again, and often do not make any contributions because it is just too time consuming.

Absolutely agree with Kakapo re the bounce back to the start and the consequent scrolling through the whole post - it's enough to put you off starting in the first place. Openening photos is the same (we've discussed this already I know). The procedure is so tedious I rarely look at moree than the initial thumbnail - the tip has to suggest something quite special before I'll open any photo.

So do I agree about the bouncing back. So if the powers that be are reading this what about the other idea of "limbo" for notices when read so we do not have such a massive list to wade through and look at.(of course if one is not VT active it would be quite blank...Yes???

Hi Guys, The ratings history is at the bottom of your ratings tab. Select ratings, look at your list of ratings and then at the bottom you'll see a link for ratings history. In other words, you look at your recent ratings and then you can see more. As for a few issues with IE and such, I believe those have now been fixed... And I do agree that the list a little bit hard to read. There's probably more words in each entry than necessary. We'll circle back and update that in a little bit. I know not everyone will like everything and some people don't like changes, but I've heard from more people that this is their favorite thing about the newer design. I do agree that the readability of the dashboard itsself is a bit of an issue, but the combination of on page instant alerts when there's something new (up in the header, the orange circles)and then a place to read more is better. we'll work on the readability...

Thanks, G. The IE scroling thing isn't fixed yet.....mine (IE8) does not 'bounce' any more, but almost always goes to the top of the thread rather than to the reply I've clicked on. Except, weirdly, on the word asscociation thread.....which I don't read anymore. :-(

Oh, so that's where it is! Thanks for guiding me to it! Don't mean to drag this on forever, but that just seems to be another example to me that the previous version was easy & useful, and the new version of "dashboard" is a flash & glitter, but not much substance IMHO. The older HP version's pop-up window had all the info. easily at hand, in one compact and complete spot. I just think it was truly all around much better.

    > You are comparing apples and oranges. The Console pop up which almost everyone hated and complained about is the equivalent of the drop down menu at the top of the page with the orange circles telling you when you have something new. It's an easy to read digest which operates smoothly and instantly. That's what you should compare the console to. The dashboard combines a bunch of stuff that was previously in other links off of your homepage. I agree that we could tidy up the dashboard, but the pull downs which are the equivalent of the console is clean, clear, easy to use, instant, and less hassle than a stupid pop up window.
