Well having been a member for quite a few years now, Im not sure why I have never asked this question to VT before.... My birth place is Gibraltar, although I now live in China. I would like Gib to be the place that marks me as HOME. But i have never ever got a little red square on my map on Gibraltar. Is this because the place is so small, the red square would take over all of Spain on the map? Look forward to some replies!
Gibraltar is situated in Andalucia; the southern region in Spain: See Malaga, Seville, Marbella.

Well this is how I see it. If you make a country your home, you don't get a red Square. I have New Zealand as my home and I don't have one. But if you make a city your home, you get a red Square, and often it takes a while to change. However Gibraltar is one of those unique situations (correct me please if I'm wrong) where it is a country but doesn't have cities. So I strongly suspect that you will never have a red square. I've lived with that since I changed from town to a country as my home. It's no big deal and I have survived remarkably well over the years LOL. smiles, Pam :-))

Gibilterra is a town. It should belong to England I think.

Yes but Maurizio, as far as the VT database goes, Gibraltar is a country of Europe. Not a part of Spain. I don't mean to get political here. just speaking of the technicalities of the database :-)

Oh, I see, sorry!

I never heard of Gibilterra but i am just speaking of a REd Square over Gibralta LOL. and that is not the Red Square in Moscow!! :-))

Maurizio my dear VT friend...please please PLEASE do not let other Gibraltarians see you have said that Gib is part of Andalucia so I should see 'spain'! And also do not let other Italians see that you said i shoud look under 'england'...they have nothing to do with eachother map wise.... But yes, you are prob right 'kiwi' that it is because it is a country and not a city that no red square has surfaced! Im sure I will live without it, but i feel kind of misplaced without it! Thankyou!

hahaha it seems then that we have a lot in common. Often (and thankfully not on VT) my country is not even marked on world maps, they conveniently 'drop' us off the edge, especially on Atlantic centred maps where we become on the side. Down here we use Pacific centred world maps so get to feature ok. I recall the globe in front of a famous film studios in California dropped us off and some kiwis went and protested LOL. Of course a lot of people think we are a part of Australia. So, yes I know that feeling :-)

Does Gibraltair belong to England or not?

Kiwi's correct. Countries can not possibly have red squares denoting your home. Here's how to get Gibralter designated as your home on the VT map: 1. Enter "Gibralter" in destination search 2. Click "See more matches for Gibraltar" 3. Choose the Gibraltar for Portugal's "Distrito de Lisboa" 4. Voila, your VT map will have a red square precisely where the real Gibraltar would have been after simply adding this obscure Portuguese village. Nobody will know the difference, (except me and kiwi of course). Welcome home!

Gibraltar is in Spain, not in Portugal.

Yes Maurizio, if we follow your instructions Confuscious, the red square will not show on the map where Gibraltar country is located sadly :-(

Ok.

There's a Trentino in Venezuela too! Perhaps somebody in a small village in Italy has a problem with that. Look at the map for VT member dankoh77 and tell me his red square doesn't include the real Gibraltar north of Morocco. Be glad, not sad ...or mad.

You have to say you have been there to get a red square. RS are nothing to do with home town.

Sorry, my previous answer was completely wrong :( I'd say there is a technical hitch with Gibraltar. You should contact VT. Especially since those from Gibraltar as so sensitive to their heritage, it is a real problem that you are not even on the world map. lol

Hi Harald/Wendy, let me explain again. There is NO technical hitch. If you place a country as your hometown then NO red square appears on your homepage world map. OK? You must name a TOWN/CITY as your hometown to get a red square. And confuscious, i see what you are saying, that the red square for Gibraltar, Portugal is sufficient to show the Gibraltar we are discussing. That's one idea, but personally i wouldn't want it or people would think I lived in Portugal, just for the "luxury" of having a red square on my world map. I think I'd reather be known to live in Gibraltar>Gibraltar than that. So, to summarize, there is no problem with the system, you just can't have a red square for your home if you name a country as your home :-)

Maurizio...Gibraltar is NOT in Spain. It is attached to Spain..but is not in it. And Kiwi..i understand totally...thankyou And Confucius...thankyou to you too...but like Kiwi said..id rather have no red square than have it be someplace elses! All cleared up now.... Thankyou!

The only people who would believe that Gibralter is in Portugal are folks living in remote mountain villages somewhere. I believe most Gibraltarans are clever enough to redirect VT members to their Gibraltar country page just like savvy veterans who visit Beijing Shi pages inevitably make their way to Beijing. Look there's a native Gibraltaran online now! Let's ask her opinion!

Oops! Uh, sorry about that. Maybe it's not such a good idea after all. So, how's the weather in Gibraltar now? Snowing?

Yes youre right we are able to redirect people...well not everyone form Gib could, but a vast majority! And im glad you picked up on the Beijing shi and Beijing pages.... And as for being able to redirect people...thats all good..but what about correct spelling? Are all VTers able to spell? Gibraltar..Gibralter and Gibraltaran....which one is correct? And if they are rong..how can you make them rite!

At least Sugarpuff is one VT member who knows how to spell "Confucius" Smart talented folks, those Gibraltarans!

Its funny because before you came along i always thought it was spelt Confucious..... Gibraltar...Gibraltarian people...

Ah so, Gibraltarians? Is that how Gibraltar citizens officially refer to themselves? I apologize for the previous "Gibraltaran" reference, which was my own guess. As for "Confucious", your reply reminds me of a similar thread in this forum where the spelling of my name was questioned by one Lady_Mystique. I responded in the form of a limerick, and never heard from the mysterious lady again: (From "What if you woke up and there were no rankings" posted previously and still available in the Confucius latest forum posting Hall of Fame) Your spelling, like fudge, is delicious but too much is not so nutritious I'd be a fatso with the extra "O" if Confucius was spelled "Confucious"

But it can BE spelt with an "O" right....? Is it the same never ending theory as 'neeeither or niiither' , or perhaps the English vs the American way of spelling? Interesting....

VT member FullMoonFever posted those quotations in the VT Mischievous Forum a couple days ago. They seem to follow me around whenever I go there. Final Score for Google "Confucius vs. Confucious" Search Competition Correct spelling: 2,130,000 Wrong spelling: 215,000 (mostly bad joke links)

Apologies confucius, as you well know, after hitting reply, you can't see the whole thread. My laziness, and I mean no harm by it. However, let me explain why I say to use the wrong "Gibraltar" is not satisfactory. Although it appears on the world map in roughly the same place as the location we speak of, also on your homepage, you have "Gibraltar,PT" blaring for all to see. So it's not a matter of just having the red square. And if one clicks on the "home" on the members page they are directed to the Portugal page. I really don't see that as satisfactory, do you? anyway, it's no biggie, but I just wanted to clear up the situation about using the wrong location.

If you're a good Gibraltarian VT member, like our honorable friend Sugarpuff, then "Gibraltar, PT" would never show up on the member homepage because there is a significant number of excellent Gibraltar country tips, placing that destination near the top of the list. The small tipless Portuguese village would not be visible until one clicks travel pages and sees it listed among her other destinations in Portugal.
