Hi can I get suggestions on how best we spread out our 6 days in South Island? Can we do Sth Island + One other (like Auckland or Ch'church)? Or will it become too hectic / or too cramped? We return to sydney after the NZ stay
Forget about Auckland and concentrate on just the South Island for your six day stay - or stick to Auckland and the north. New Zealand may look wee stuck out there on its own in the Pacific on a map but the reality is long distances between major centres - seven or eight hours driving from Christchurch to Dunedin or Queenstown for a start - and that won't give you much time for any sightseeing along the way and, believe me, you will want to stop.
Depending on your budget, you could check out the possibility of flying in to Christchurch and out of Queenstown. You don't say how you intend to get around - driving yourself is the best option by far on such a short trip. Using public transport will place some retrictions of time on you.
What are your main interests? New Zealand's brand of terror tourism, or a quieter enjoyment of the great outdoors. A little more info about what you are looking for will help us give you better information.
When you say December, do you mean Christmas (busy, busy, high demand on accommodation) or pre-school holidays?

As you of course realise, six days is neither here nor there! Certainly don't even attempt to "do" both islands - you barely have time to see one. I agree flying in/out of Christchurch/Queenstown makes sense, cutting down road travel times. You don't really want to be just driving and not have enough time to actually do things. Check out the places you really want to see, like Milford Sound, or the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, and concentrate on them.

Christchurch IS on the South Island and is one of the main airports, so it is more than likely it will be included in your tri (unless you flew in and out of Queesntown).

hi wandering camel ; thanks. so lets say we just do south island. can do a different hotel every nite or rent a caravan.. that will serve 3 purposes; no dependency on expensive hotels, or local taxi/ car rentals and fleibility, how does that sound?

Campervanning is very popular in New Zealand but it won't necessarly save you any money as the hire is more expensive per day than an ordinary car plus they're heavier on fuel. There are very reasonably priced motels with kitchen facilities all over New Zealand. I'd go for a regular car, sleeping in a proper bed and access to a proper shower any day.
