Riding on the top deck of a double decker bus on my hilly journey to the centre of the city, is a pleasure almost as good as flying ( on some of Cork's steeper hills) but without the hassle. Peering down into gardens and other spaces hidden behind high walls at ground level, gives a whole other perspective on a normally boring ride into town.
So what small things brighten your day ?
The ranking came from the London group WealthInsight, naming the cities with the most millonaires living there. So how it relates with visitors ,do we go where the millonaires are?
Just wondering if the spell checker on VT has been turned off, or is it because I've changed from Google Chrome to Opera for my VT viewing.
Thanks

Would you go fly without a human pilot? Pilotless flights may seem like a possibility in the future. I'm not very keen about this- but who knows, maybe my sentiments would change later. What do you think?
This evening, there are thunderstorms and tornadoes and heavy rains in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area...yet I go outside and thoroughly enjoy the rain coming down. And I wondered if this was because my first 11 years were spent in Beaumont, Texas, on the Texas Gulf Coast, where it rains 56-60 inches (150 centimeters) a year. I grew up loving the thunderstorms that happened every summer afternoon...is that the reason I still love them in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area?
How about you? Are there things that you grew up with that you still love, even though you have moved far away?
Bill
Can someone please explain in very simple words (ideally none containing more than six letters each) why the International Date Line is on the opposite side of the planet to the location of Greenwich Mean Time, or Universal Time. I would have thought 'zero hours' at GMT would signify a date change, but it doesn't, and now my head hurts thinking about it.
Thanks.
Chris
Do you believe in them?
Have you seen any?
Do you pooh pooh any reports and photos of them as hokum?
Where does Turkey fit in the global, geographic setting? VT puts it as the Middle East. Thats not exactly true. Politically and geographically, its really part of Europe. But as it also extends into Asia, it can also be considered Asian.
I would be curious to see what others think. The country is a link of course of the supercontinent called Eurasia. The western portion with Istanbul is more European whilst the far Eastern portion definitely has an Asiatic feeling.
The UN btw, categorizes Turkey as being in Western Asia.
I finally met with Claus in Makati, Philippines last month and he looked handsome-r in person. And, he is adorable and well, he was surrounded by beautiful Filipinas! Just asking, why do some of you guys post your not-so-good pictures on VT? Also, please don't post your pix when you were still cute and adorable because I might not be able recognize you on VT Meetings...He! He! He!
do you know any?
If you discovered a new dinosaur and got to name it ..what would you go for?
ours would be a small flying dinosaur called a Shezzosaur...of course!
It looks like we'll be flying EasyJet for the first time this summer. Any opinions or advice on what to look out for (e.g., "extra charges")?
I recently bought a pair of this brand of shoe here in Australia, they are made in Germany, they are very comfortable and as I have a wide foot wondered if anyone knew if this brand is a wide make - I am keen to get some fur lined boots and have seen some Rieker boots that I like on a German website. In the shoe it just says size 42, no width is mentioned. Shops here don,t tend to stock fur lined boots but I am keen to get some as I suffer with cold feet. Do you think it is reasonably safe to go ahead and order them considering I won,t be able to try them on?
We've just had the telecasting of the mini-series 'Mrs Biggs'.
Those who know will know.
We here in Melbourne, Australia, have a special interest because a very great part of his 30 years 'on the run' was spent here. I was actually near the Essendon motel where he was hiding when he was almost pinned down.
Reading the story of his life, especially after his marriage, makes interesting reading.
'Mrs Biggs', Charmian, comes up as a very interesting person - wife and mother.
What I'd like to know is, is he, the very sick Ronald, still clinging to life in a British Nursing Home at this moment?
The Charmian (Biggs now Brent) aspects of the story are here:
abc.net.au/austory/transcrip... >
A search under 'Ronald Biggs' brings up many results.
(Dare I say his story is in some ways similar to our own national outlaw hero, Ned. Not overtly hated by the public.)
I just edited my PPP with the Edit Thumbnail feature.
What a nice new feature that is.
Anyone else used it already???

I had a glitch in my account that prevented me from accessing most of the site. I wrote VT from my home e-mail--probably on Sat. I got a return message--from G himself--on SUNDAY, and he had fixed it. Pretty good huh?
About a month ago I managed to accumulate my first locations that share a name in the VT database - so I now have two pages named Haystack Rock, Oregon.
The bad news, of course, is that both (actually three -but one of those I have no good photos) are large rocks off the Oregon coast - so there really isn't much to write for tips about either of them (though one has good tide pools and is routinely a place where tourists get stranded at high tide, even though they are not supposed to go onto the rock at all).
Hi,
I've been travelling for just over a year now with my 15" Macbook, and it's been wonderful. I spend a lot of time on my computer because I work from it wherever I go, and it's very important to me.
My travel style is as minimalistic as possible (except when it comes to technology), normally Ill go around with a carryon luggage and a big backpacker bag, with several smaller bags in the backpacker bag (eg. laptop bag, backpack), and I travel pretty much on a whim (eg. I never know where I'm going more than 1-2 weeks in advance of going there). Generally I do pretty much calm stuff like beaches and temples and take it easy, and I try to stay out of big cities, but I may be doing some stuff in the Amazon soon (no cliff jumping or windsurfing or anything like that). Overall I would say it's possible that I'll go anywhere, except for warzones and other similarly dangerous places.
I like speed on my laptops and have been feeling like getting a bigger screen to really feel more at home and luxurious on the go, with a faster processor as I multitask quite a lot. I've been a computer guy for while so I am sold on the technical aspects of it, though I've heard of lots of perpetual travellers ditching their bigger laptops for 11" and 13" and similar, but I couldn't work on that small a computer regularly. My question is that based on this style of travel, does anybody have experiences travelling with a 17" Laptop, and would it be better to use a 15"?
At the moment there is a lot of controversy in the UK about the new Google Glass (computer glasses).Apparently they will be banned in a number of clubs and bars in the USA.These glasses will cost around £1000 (1500$) when released in the UK.
How do you feel about someone filming you without your knowledge and do you think this is a step too far?
I saw in yesterday's Sunday Chicago Tribune (I still read one hard copy paper each week) that Wigan defeated Manchester City for the English FA Cup. My wife and I were in London last year when Chelsea beat Liverpool and if I remember correctly Man City won the English Premier League title beating out Man United.
Here are the first of my 2 questions to help me understand International Futbol.
1) What exactly is the FA Cup, how many teams participate, and who is invited to play?
2) I can also see in the paper that regular Premier League Games were being played yesterday so I'm assuming the FA Cup is not a post season tournament.
I see the local Chicago professional team plays in League play and then in a number of other different types of contest throughout the season and I still have a hard time understanding all these different types of games.
In American sports we are used to the Regular Season and then the Playoffs where the top teams from the Regular Season go to the Playoffs.

Eventhough i have a smartphone and it has opened up a semi new world...whatsapping foc, watching clear videos seamlessly, good photo taking, wider screen but during emergencies or when battery is flat. To send messages and make calls there is a delay its slower than the keypad phone by at least 3 times.
Depending more and more on the smartphone vs. the pc. I reckon i am trying to stop buying books and quite happy to read using a tablet or phablet. The bigger the heavier though. So probably a 7 inch is suffice to read ebooks, watch movies, check and reply mails, surf. I have not tried using these big devices for calls thus wondering if i should pay more for the phone feature or just leave it sep.
I do get frustrated when my smartphone dialer isn't working or slow to make a call. And when i need to send an urgent message in perfect spelling can be challenge. A blackberry is advantageous in that it has keyboard and touch screen.
What's your thoughts and experience?Thanks
"Happy Mother's Day" to all mothers in VT Community .... :)
A Hawaiian radio station I listen to, KINE, asked its FB list, "What is your life philosophy, in one sentence?"
A lot of folks quoted the Golden Rule; others stressed, "Family first." My favorite response was from a guy who said, "Two scoops rice."
What's yours? Mine seems to change daily. Two days ago it was "Measure twice, cut once." Yesterday it was "Be kind, even to nasty people who would benefit from a good smack upside the head." Not sure yet what today's is.
Have you been treated as a servant sometimes? What happened.
Let's discuss if you like...I will tell my experience as well.
I watched a fascinating but saddening doco tonight about Cassino and Monte Cassino. My uncle was there as a medic with the NZ army. He talked of it - a little.
There was amazing footage of the bombing of the monastery up on the mount and of the town - apparently they were tryng out a new bombing strategy so posted five film units around.
To think I was watching what my uncle must have seen all those years ago. Not something you could miss.
But it made me curious about what the area is like now. Was the town rebuilt, was the monastery repaired?
Has anyone ever been there on a pilgrimage, as it were?
Help for a non native English user – The words May and Might: I have a feeling that might is more negative. For instance "The uncooked food in India might make you sick". But I looked it up in dictionaries on the net, this wasn't mentioned at all. Is there a difference in UK and USA?
