Hi,I am barracking for Australia and have the flags flying high and a jar of vegemite to start things off. Leisal Jones who is a 3 time Olympic gold medalist swimmer has been crucified for her weight by the media..respect for such an elite athlete is the call of the day and hopefully an apology is forthcoming to her,this is her fourth Olympics. Team GB got off to a winning start yesterday, with the women's football team beating New Zealand 1-0 in a less than convincing display On a separate note, LOCOG (the Games organising committee) are squirming with embarrassment today because the video displays at the North Korea game showed the players' images next to the SOUTH Korean flag - whoops!

Sunday will be the first action for Team Tanzania when boxer Selemani Kidunda will take part in the first round of the Welterweight Division, good luck fellah.

I'm sailing all the way to support China with Fans of China in England, France, Italy, Spain, Holland, Ireland and of course in Asia! I have woefully done no preparation or research yet to support my Madagascar team. I think a watch of the movie may be in order to refresh my memory about this fine country's culture. ...From what I understand, this is one of the few places in the world which boasts both singing lemurs and geckos. The crocodile has gone to the Olympics as our representative in 400m Swimming.

I think the Dutch already started their party at the Heineken house; there only were 2 sporters present at the flag ceremony in the Olympic Village. I just saw the live coverage of the Olympic flame going through London. PJ

I'm waving the Botswana flag to support their team of 5 athletes in mens 400m, mens 800metres ( 2 competitors), flyweight boxing and womens 400m. The runners remind of the fun we had when I was teaching in secondary schools in Botswana over 25 years ago now. Athletics is a summer time sport and the runners would all be in bare feet. The sandy race tracks would get so hot that the starters had to be quick otherwise the runners just couldn't stand still on the hot sand for long enough. Even their hardened feet would end up blistered. The science teachers were roped in to be judges (because they thought we could read the stop watches) but we weren't so reliable and quite often we had to swap over the watch if the number one judge had got a slower time than the number two judge. It was a real pleasure doing those sports days. I might be lucky enough to cheer on the Botswana womens 400 metre athlete, Amandle Montsho, because I've secured tickets, through the official channels, for the events in the Olympic stadium on Friday 3rd August. Hoping Finland's small but spirited team will do better than in China in 2008. Best bet is Satu Mäkelä-Nummela in women's trap. Also some strength in off road biking, shooting and swimming. Got Sisu!

There are still seats on sale for the Opening Ceremony; £2012 for the most expensive ones. I just learned that the Mascots are called Mandeville and Wenlock. PJ

Mandeville is the Mascot for the Paralympic Games. It's named after Stoke Mandeville, a village ( albeit a large one) where the ground breaking Hospital was a national centre for treating people with Spinal Injuries. Wenlock is the small town in Shropshire, England where the idea of the Olympic Games was revived and transformed into the modern Olympic Games. I havent checked but there is probably a VT tip or review about both places. I'm really looking forward to the opening ceremony tonight. Mike

Is there anywhere else that you would get a reigning monarch to have a laugh at herself (James Bond excerpt)? The whole thing was a great spectacle, shame that it finished with a damp squib. Whilst I thoroughly enjoy 99% of McCartneys work, it does seem (to me) that we didn't need that dreadful bit at the end. Could put it down to the sound system I suppose, but it was virtually on a par with his and Eltons bits at the Jubilee show a month or so back.

Watched the swimming this morning, now watching the rowing! I love the Olympics!! Think I will be catching the road race at the last 5 mins though! Can't wait for the athletics to start. Hope everyone else is able to catch the sports they enjoy! Hayley :)
